Where are all the space whales?

We need more oddities, curiosities, and activity in space.

Where is the deep space observation array? Doesn't astronomy exist in Elite: Dangerous? Sure we can travel all around the Milky Way, but what about the stars in other galaxies? How could be incorporate (more) astronomy into Elite: Dangerous?

Weren't we supposed to have comets? Where are all the meteorites impacting gas giants? Imagine discovering a system where an asteroid is scheduled to impact a Jupiter sized planet. You can observe it and report.

Where are all the deep space probes? Is exploration only limited to ships. And while on the topic of probes, where are our personal probes? I'd love to launch a probe into an atmospheric planet, being that we can't land on them yet, to discover oddities, curiosities, and activities.

What about scientific discoveries and experimentation? Is a new type of hyperdrive being created that could potentially destroy a solar system and prevent hyperdrive operation?

Dyson spheres would be absolutely awesome to see in Elite: Dangerous, where we can assault the nodes and reduce the system's resources, or we could observe multiple high energy microwaves beaming energy back to stations.

And finally, yes, where are all the space whales? I would expect the imperials with their flashy style would create such fantastic creatures to beautify their systems. Maybe a bounty could be made on space whales? Admit it, you'd love shooting space whales, wouldn't you?

What do you think? Make some other suggestions that you would love to see in Elite: Dangerous. Permit systems would be ideal for these things. It would motivate people to actually get permits for systems.

Agreed!

Unfortunately, exploration has not got much focus in the last 2 years. There are a few new things in 2.2 coming, but overall its pretty much the same as when it was implemented in gamma.

Richness of the galaxy should be of higher importance, but I suspect it doesn't sell Frontier copies as much as a swanky Ship Launched Fighters feature would.... sadly

Yesterday the GalNet news had something about Sirius Corp. Probes for deep space exploration, so almost safe to say they will be in 2.2 and have interactions.

If they had space whales we'd have to have harpoons.
I can just picture their use against Cutters, T-9s, T-7s and Asps. Pirates using harpoons on the cargo hatches. Bounty hunters using them on pilots right through the canopy. Large and huge harpoons. Full harpoon loadouts. Engineered harpoons. Stealth builds.
If the whales could fight back by electric shock, swatting and charging that would be cool. Get caught in a stampede.
Have a set number, hunt them to extinction and feel bad. Find a new species and do the same thing. Run afoul with some sentients.

As long as I can throw me and my Sidewinder between you, your harpoon and the space whale...

(Oh, and I think I've found some space whales in the SC forum.)

And, deep in the black, as you come up from the corona with a belly-full of fuel and make ready the DSS, a battered anaconda warps in. CMDR Ahab hails you:

"Hast seen the White Whale?"

What about Space Jellyfish?

The new 'space platforms' in 2.2 will fill some gaps.

I don't think we will see space whales or the like for a long while. A sentient planet could be amusing... an Earth-like that talks back when scanned. :)

There are other hyperdrvie techs, and a current plotline centres around one.

Sirius just sent out a bunch of deep space probes. See last weeks Galnet.

A Dyson sphere or similar stellar engineering is one of the things that those in The Rift are searching for, in response to the mysteries hinted in the Elite fiction.

If by 'love shooting space whales' you mean 'would love to just open up on one of those wedding barges' then, yes. :)

I think that much of what you are looking for is already here, and much of the rest is stuff we are going to see - if not shortly, then eventually.

Although one galaxy is enough for us, I think. Given the ridiculous distances between galaxies, travel to another one would make travel anywhere in our own galaxy effectively instantaneous, given the speed that a transgalactic drive would need to attain. I also think that 400,000,000,000 stars is probably enough, given that it is going to take over a century to explore at current rates.

Apparently theres loads of stuff out there we just haven't found. Hardly surprisingly really when its looking for a needle in an haystack thats is the size of the universe..

Call me cynical but at this point I don't think there is actually anything out there, but rather DB is having us on and trying to catch up to put these wonders in the game. The missing.. indeed. How many bloody life times are we meant to spend chasing red herrings and myths? Fast becoming a joke.

Space whales typically circle rock hermit lairs.
I believe they are part of some sort of rock hermit communications network.

(1) From what I have read, FD is in year 2 of a 10-year plan for Elite Dangerous. I think a lot of this stuff, the oddities, "mysterious" things, etc. is already in the works.
(2) Space is really, really big. Huge. A lot of this stuff is probably already out there just waiting for you to find it. FD has as much as told us so. Somebody wrote that if everyone on the planet alive today began playing ED immediately, even accounting for population growth it would still take several tens of thousand of years to completely explore just this galaxy.
(3) The "crashed ship" recently discovered. Obviously the carcass/skeleton of something organic.
(4) I would love to see periodic asteroids and comets. Watch an asteroid crash into a gas-giant? Land on that biatch and ride it in! [cool] Or land on an outgassing comet as it approaches a star (challenge!)! Or even have a personal base inside a comet or asteroid.

That's the line Sean Murray took "everything is out there, you just haven't found it!"... It's left a bad taste in my mouth :(
