Where to Find Occupied Escape Pods?

Just for something to do I'd like to become a one-man Insterstellar Rescue, savings lives by recovering as many Occupied Escape Pods as possible. A means of identifying the best places to search would obviously help enormously. This is from the Elite Fandom Wiki:
Occupied Escape Pods are legal salvage Commodities that can be handed in to a Search and Rescue Agent for a reward. They can be found in certain System Signal Sources, Unidentified Signal Sources, Points of Interest, and other locations.
The implication is that the existence of Occupied Escape Pods in signal sources is not entirely random.

But which signal sources should I be checking? Is there a higher probability of finding escape pods in particular signal sources? If so, which? Does the system/faction state have any influence?

Also, one would have thought that escape pods would be equipped with an automatic beacon that would stick out like a sore thumb on the Nav panel or even FSS. After all, aircrew and aircraft have had SARBE (Search And Rescue Beacon Equipment) since the 1950s.

Hi,I used to search for them in Degraded ss ,Combat aftermath and planetside poi.

You can also get a lot sometimes from the megaships you see in some systems but u might need to scan with data scanner then use hatchbreaker limpets.

Also u can privateer wanted ships to rescue slaves,Imperial slaves and Master chefs(my favourite).

Good luck and happy rescuing cmdr-) o7.

Megaships that have rescue bays/hatches are the best bet if you want the numbers
You can pack hatch breakers and limpets go rescue the poor souls...

Else you can randomly find them on the planets in random POIs (crash sites, etc) or in space (in NHSS threat 5 and above, although you may also encounter Interceptors or scouts). But dont expect more than 1-2 per POI and that is when they actually appear in the said POIs

Pirate activity threat is the way to go

Get a ship like a t7 (the ships in ED have a 'suspicious rating'. A ship like the T7 rating is very low so you do not get scanned by the pirates.) Enter the Pirate activity and you will notice a cloud of search and rescue salvage floating around. Position yourself in the middle of this cloud and get ready to deploy your limpets (more = faster)

When you have scooped them all up (use a heatsink if the pirates scan you) log off and log on again.;) and repeat... Or be a sports.. low wake out and enter the pirate activity again. Remember the second time you have cargo... And these pirates have big guns... Run a cool build to fine tune this method.

My best turnout (in the Colonia Area) has been at Distress Beacons on planets. You can find them by scanning the Nav Beacon - no need to scan individual planets. So far, about 3-6 per POI that contains any at all, which most do so far. If it is a crashed but intact ship don't bother to land. It should only be debris left plus the coffins clearly visible from your ship.

(I tried the megaship-in-Luchtaine method, but it did not work for me. I successfully opened both Escape Hatch 3 and the cargo bays. I got Occupied Escape Pods on the radar, but all stuck inside the megaship.)

With the qualifier that this is out near Colonia, check this thread

Perfect if you are unlocking the Colonia engineers, but not so convenient perhaps if you are not. But you can get a lot in short order, and perhaps you can find the same sort of setup somewhere closer to you. I remember there used to be CGs for these, but haven't seen one in a long time.

I've spent the past few weeks boldly going to find, map and land on as many undiscovered planets as I could find.
There were minor wreckage and escape pods on every one.
Crashing your ship and dozing your way through eternity doesn't count as First Footfall.

There's sometimes one in a NHSS 5 or 6. Also that Distress Call which often has Thargoids in the Pleiades system with the ammonia planet. I can add the system name later when I'm in-game if you don't know it.
