Newcomer / Intro Where to?

You can use white dwarfs for long range jumps, but its risky. I’ve never had the need to so I haven’t done it. Those jets can rip a ship to shreds as you just learned. But there’s videos out there that show how its done.
I'd argue White dwarfs aren't actually helpful. Firstly, like you said, they are extremely dangeous due to their massive exclusion zone and short jets and secondly, they give such a laughable range boost that it's actually faster to just continue jumping, because in the time it would take to carefully position your ship and then scoop for the boost, realign yourself (again while carefully circumnavigating the exclusion zone), etc. , you're actually going to cover three times the distance just by normal jumping.

You can probably do these without getting the surface vehicle. I believe that you should easily be able to get your ship close enough to those wreckages to scan them with the datalink scanner that is already included on your Cobra.
I tried them in my little DBX and datalink scanner couldn't scan one of them (can't remember which, it was a crashed SRV inside a hanger), so asked on forums and they said to try Surface Recon Vehicle (SRV), which I had never used before, so I got one and scanned all 6 points.
It was hard to get used to but eventually got the hang of an SRV - quite fun zooming up the side of a crashed ship and doing backflips in low gravity.

I haven't flown in over 8 months but I managed to get 110000000 and a free vulture. It wasn't easy for an old battle scarred veteran like me. Pretty easy for a young, hungry new CMDR though. The fire group nonsense was the worst for me.
