Newcomer / Intro Which of the two internals?

I have a size 4 slot that needs... something. The available options are:

  • Guardian FSD booster
  • An extra AFMU

Either I'll jump a little further or I'll last a little longer. I'm aware that the existing AFMU, if broken, can be reset for a little extra juice so that I perhaps don't need another. But for every comment I can find that suggests this, there's another saying it's not worth the hassle. The other AFMU is only a size 2 by the way.

Likewise the booster is nice, but the power drain is huge on my small size ship. I'll have to do a lot of module switching, although I technically only need to between longer travels and short exploration hops so it might not be a bother. The shield will have to come off though while I use it. 😬

I briefly entertained the idea of bringing a Fuel Transfer Limpet Controller instead for extra utility, but honestly... the lone NPC ship near the bubble that's out of gas need to figure out how to contact the Fuel Rats already. 🤭

Class 2 AFMU will do you fine as long as you don't go daft. You can always synth more ammo for it if you run out of the 2500 the 2A carries.

That 9.25 Ly jump increase from a class 4 Guardian FSD Booster is not to be sniffed at - it makes getting TO somewhere novel a bit easier.

Unless you plan to go without a dry dock for literally months, two AFMUs are pointless.

And as for the size, I always bring the smallest AFMU possible. They all repair the same, the only difference is the amount of "ammo" (i.e. you're going to refill a smaller AFMU more often) but functionally they're all the same.

edit: ah, ninjas..

...as long as you can manage the power drain I would think that the FSD boost would be the choice. If you're exploring (presumed), you should be able to shut off several items to reduce power use.
As indicated by @Para Handy, synthing ammo is a great way to keep going and the MATs for synthesis are mass-free (magically stored "somewhere"). Take advantage of that!
If, however, you won't be able get over the worry that you don't have a 2nd AFMU, that may drive you crazy out there all by yourself with nothing but your thoughts...

While you are just flying in space you can turn off the following to save power.
  • Cargo Hatch
  • Shields
  • AMFU
  • Power Distributer
  • Vehicle Hanger
If you have gone through the hassle of getting access to the Guardian Booster it would be a shame not to use it.

The only time I ever needed an AMFU, I didn't have one. All the time I carried one, I never used it.

The time I needed it, very early on in the game, hadn't watched any videos or joined the forum, I was about 7,000ly outside the bubble and I kept coming across these weird blue stars that had plumes coming off of them. I went through a few. At some point, my FSD packed in. I had no idea about reboot/repair. I self destructed. Just over a year ago I went to Colonia, never took an AMFU, never needed it.

Also, if I may add, the wonderful DSSA initiative means that even if your solitary AFMU does buy the farm, and I haven't had that happen to me either, ever, you can pretty much always find a place to repair out in the black.

A huge tip of the hat to DSSA, along with all the vodka you can drink if you ever show up at my house.

I'm at that point where I don't really need the AFMU anymore. Until I suddenly do, of course. I forgot to refill it on my way back from Sag A and had my FSD on 81% 3/4 of the way back (my jump range was about 20 ly). I also figured out that the size of it didn't really matter. Then again lacking mass, it's okay if I put a bigger one in the available class 4 internal.

Also, I'm using a 2A powerplant on the Dolphin. Even without the FSD booster, module management is more or less implied.

I kinda wish there was a third option. Not seeing it. I even fitted an extra fuel tank already, more would be overkill.

Ah no I haven't actually done that yet. I've read about it, that's all.

Psychologically speaking, I survived my first 1200 20ly jumps to Sag A and back on podcasts. The booster would not actually change much about that process. Also that was just straight up travel, not exploration.

A second afmu is pointless. I'd fit a Guardian FSD booster.

Arjay's advice is spot on, shut down what's not currently needed if you're thin on power.
