Which power for explorers?

I've been out of the bubble for a good couple of months. Just on my way back now due to the community goal and the powerplay stuff. Its cool being able to read galnet and the powerplay stuff 1000's ly from civ. I was just wondering who explorers tend to pledge to? I'd read different powers were for different careers.

Who is your choice?

I haven't had a chance to read all the bios and properly work out who for myself, keep jumping and dont get long to read the info!.

Li Yong-Rui is the best power for explorers IMHO. The rank 5 perk of 200% exploration data price is awesome. Unfortunately, to grind up to that rank 5 isn't really practical nor obtainable for explorers unless they choose to do other stuff to earn it, and even then if you go out on a long deep space trip you won't be able to do any missions to maintain that rank 5. I with he had an iterative exploration bonus perk where you got something like 10% for rank 1, 25% for rank 5, etc.

Still, the -15% refit costs in his area are handy for Asp flyers anyway. It allows you to refit your Asp (or any other ship) cheaper to do some other roles in between deep space trips if the mood hits you.

I haven't pledged to any powers myself yet but I'm leaning towards Li Yong-Rui. I might just make a go at trying to get that rank 5 and see how it goes. I'm still not sure pledging to any powers is any better than just remaining neutral and enjoying all of the passive perks anyway....

Gratz on still being able to jump without crashing!
.
Li Yong Rui seems to be pro explorers for the reasons already given.
.
However the discount to outfitting applies to anyone pledged to him OR anyone who is not pledged at all. So you don't have to worry about being sucked into the power struggle to gain some benefits. :)

What would you say it would take to get to Rank 5? If I returned and sold 20k system worth of data, would I hit Rank 5 and then benefit from the leftovers?

From what I've seen so far, the best strategy for an explorer may not to pledge to anyone at all. The reason for that is pledging to a power will make other powers hostile to you, so you will increase the risk of hostile interdictions in controlled space.

Yeah, this is what I'm going after. I'm a neutral explorer, For The Science and so on so forth, not interested in politics... :)

I'm a merchant and explorer. Getting involved in politics is bad for business and unnecessarily complicates exploration.

I've taken the lessons of my ancient Earth Phoenecian ancestors to heart. Bring valuable trade goods and information to EVERYONE. Take no sides. And most importantly...

PROFIT!

I considered this, and was concerned it may be the answer. I would like to participate in the new mechanics though.

Perhaps someone who is more versed in the mechanics can give a more definitive answer, but I believe that the passive benefits still apply even if you are not pledged. You can pledge and still participate though from what I gather, you just won't reach a really high tier as an explorer AFAIK.

I suppose if you could find a power that had one side of its controlled area facing directly out of the bubble (so you need not go through another power to reach deep space) that problem could be minimised. But are any of the powers in that position?

Yep, Li Yong-Ruo is exactly like that. He is the best fit power for explorers, but as said above I'm leaning towards staying neutral as possibly the best choice of all. Unfortunately it means missing out on the whole power play politics. But then, when you are thousands of light years away from any other living person, do politics even matter? ☺

After some deliberation I pledged to the Alliance. It was either them, Sirius, the princess or Antal, but Sirius are mean, Antal is a loon and the princess is compromised by her involvement with whatshisface - Patreus - so it has to be Mahon and his second-hand tractor dealership.

None of the Powers are completely surrounded, at least at the moment, so this shouldn't be a problem.
More of an issue is that there was a bug in Beta where you seemed to get interdicted in your home systems by enemy Power's agents who thought you were trespassing in their territory.
While they lowered the interdiction frequency, I don't believe they've actually resolved this bug yet.
So if you can't avoid interdictions, you'd likely get into trouble even while only in your own systems.

I'd say it depends on the faction you chose, but I got interdicted in my home system and the "wanted" ship that interdicted me scanned me and left. Nothing happened after that and it just straight up FSD'd away. I looked in the contacts panel and it didn't appear wanted there.

All joking apart - I love this kind of thread, as I HAVE NO IDEA at all how 1.3 works!!!

I read avidly this sort of thread, as a low brow explorer coming back with 5 or 6 scans of unknown data, WHERE is the best place to prostitute myself and sell myself again?

Princess Duval would make a fiiiiiine sister.

I think I like what Kat sees even more. Especially the eyes.

I don't know if I'll ever actually pledge allegiance in game, but the allegiance in my head that I would pledge if I ever get round to picking one just got even more Aisling.

Hhhmm.. Your vision may actually be hooter...

In akk seriousness, though, I think I'll be sticking to the "Neutral" zone, and keep working on Pand when not out exploring.

Until some Power comes along offering an FSD double up module, that is... At which point, I'm in. Until all my ships are fitted with one, at least...

Z...
