which would be the better laptop for odyssey. choice of 2

so, my less than 2 year old laptop is being returned due to a fan grinding noise (second time now in less than 2 yrs, i will be getting a refund, the specs for this is below, with the refund i have narrowed it down to 2 choices, which do you think is the better option. one has a better cpu, the other has a better gpu, i am torn between the 2. both are 17" screens with 512gb ssd. and 16gb ram. Which do you think would play odeyssey better. (please don't suggest a better and cheaper desktop, as i don't have the room for a desk.)

While the i7 12700H has a better CPU benchmark result, the RTX 3060 laptop edition is far superior to the 3050 Ti laptop edition.

Considering general use cases beyond odyssey, i'd recommend the latter.

GPUs are used for gaming. Not so much CPUs. So choose the more powerfull GPU.

Also.. I dont like the built quality of Medion.
For what it is worth; If you choose a laptop for the 144Hz panel; Dont. This spec will never get 144hz in a game like EDO unless playing in 800x600

I have an MSI gaming laptop, I would never consider going for this one because of the GPU, the RTX 3050 is a low end GPU in the 3000 range, mine has a RTX 2070, that level of performance would be minimum you would want to go for. The RTX 3050 on the other hand performs around or below RTX 2060 levels in many games. While I am not familiar with the Medion brand the RTX 3060 would be the preferred choice out of these two but if you can find one with a 3070. I'm not saying it won't run with the RTX 3050, but I don't think you would be happy with the performance specially if you are going to play Odyssey.

My MSI, and the MSI I had previously, have always been extremely reliable, if you can find an MSI with a 3060 I would say go for that even for a slightly higher price.

The RTX 3060 is considerably faster than the 3050 Ti and will be a more meaningful difference than the difference in CPU.

Buy a Predator Helios 300 (upgraded to 32GB), and then you can tell me what kind of performance I could expect from Odyssey ;)

2nd one.

so, just to update this post, i went for the

Medion Defender P15 17.3" , but with the R7 5800h (8-core) and a rtx 3060,(because i found it at a good price £899, and they sent me the r7-5800h, instead of ordered r5-5600h) and i am so glad i did, the problems i had before in odyssey was mainly on the fleet carrier, and on planets, with stutters, freezing and crashes, but the new medion has improved all this by far, and runs much cooler, with 49-65c temps on both cpu, &gpu, which for a laptop running ed is amazing. Nothing special about my settings in vr, usual stuff and vr medium. But as you can see from screenshots below, seems to run very well, no stuttering, smooth as butter.

still running so good, i am now a medion erazer fanboy. pics below and settings, inside the fleet carrier in odyssey was aways the main problem with my asus tuf, the Medion handles it so well on vr medium, with pretty low temps.

On a katana GF66 11 from curry’s i7 windows 11 RX3070 seems pretty good, got it £65 quid off as boxt.co.uk where cheaper plus I’d of got money off using Quidco the ssd was less than the other option on their site though.

Im running this game on 9th gen i7 + 2070m and it is totally fine for graphic card. It never goes above 75c.
Get a model with better heatsink for CPU. This game drives CPU to CTF temp (over 90c) during onfoot mode.

Be noticed currently there are many laptops with a very powerful standalone GPU yet still use the integrated iGPU (inside the CPU) for external projection. These standalone GPUs cannot project to external screens by themselves. For this game, when CPU runs over CTF temp, it will trigger external projection disconnect and cause game crash. So get a bulky one with very good cooling system, especially for CPU side. Other thin and light models would hardly sustain the heat built up from long time playing.

one with RTX 3060 ofcourse, but I think both will still lag quite a bit. I have GTX 1080, which is roughly about same as RTX 3060 and I struggle in Odyssey with it, in settlements I get 20-35fps due bad optimization. Both of those laptops are 144hz monitor, so most likely you'd want to run games @ 144fps and that would mean that your GPU would be under constant 100% usage and on laptops it's very bad. I'd suggest buying one of those cooling pads with it (laptop stand with fans under it).
