While waiting for VR to mature

I've come to the conclusion that neither of the current first generation VR headsets are worth my hard earned credits.

So headtracking it is I guess. At least until next generation HMD. I've read up on most of the trackers, but does anyone have pros and cons on headtrackers for Elite: Dangerous specifically? Wireless would be nice... :)

Fly safe all.

Other than stating that you are not using VR, I really see this post as being in the wrong area of the forum. Would you not get better results posting somewhere where people actually use those devices? VR users won't (or its very unlikely) be using one, so not in the best position to advise you.

I used a TrackIR years ago - it was over priced from what I recall, it was well over £100 and if I had the option of VR as I do now, I'd rather put the cash toward that. Not sure whats on offer now though - I have heard of Elite Tracker or something....

Cheers Commander. You're probably right. I've just been so eager to buy one of them, but reading all the E: D related reviews has convinced me that waiting for next gen is best for me. So I was wondering if other would be VR commanders were thinking the same as me. :)

Ed tracker is probably best value for money.
I personally have a tobii eyetracker I used before going VR.
There is imo only two major drawbacks to it and it's the price and you need to be fairly close to the screen.

Still it was cheaper than TrackIR and it is completely untethered. No need to wear anything, no pro clip, no hat with reflectors etc.

Just sit down and play.
And it tracks where you look. So you aren't facing away from the screen like you sometimes do with other headtrackers.
It also requires a fully capable usb3 port, same problem with Asmedia chips as the oculus and other high bandwidth usb 3 devices.
So asus mother board owners should be vary.

I used a TrackHat for a while before getting a Rift. It was fine though mine was a little sensitive to stray light sources and reflections. The cable used to annoy me (probably because I put it away each time) so I would recommend going wireless. TrackHat Plus, bit pricey IMO: http://www.trackhat.org/trackhat-plus. AFAIK there is no wireless version of EDTracker.

Agreed OP would probably get more interest in either DD or the Hardware sections.

ASMedia fixed that in updated firmware (at least they did for my Asus board, YMMV).

I would not play ED without my vive. I agree that it is expensive but the quality and immersion is amazing. Maybe I have been lucky but I think it works really well. The only real problem is that I can not drink my beer and whisky from a glass anymore.. The bottle is the only option.

Use a Straw....Simples!

Well, I use it :)

I can say that without question VR is absolutely the right platform for Elite. It is incredible. Going from a 3D env in a 2D space, to a 3D env in a 3D space is hard to put into words. I am a first timer to Elite, and started with an oculus rift on it about a week ago. Occasionally I disconnect the rift to configure menus and my voice attack commands as it is a bit easier to configure that way. When I play in 3d simulated, it is nothing even close to using the rift. To be in a dogfight and watch a fighter turn a 360 why you are watching with your head turned up, tracking him the whole way, literally makes me laugh with pleasure like a little kid. You honestly feel like you are in a spaceship, and your mind can't separate it to a certain degree. I also use it for flight sims (I am a private pilot) and it is the closest thing to real flying you can get. VR is still maturing, but, I am happy with every cent I paid as flight sims and space sims are ready for it... other games, well, not quite there yet.

Ah, sorry CLylonSurfer, I didn't see the part about the head tracker... came across this from a google search. Never mind, I don't use a headtracker! :)

I too am now going to wait for second gen VR. I'm hoping the required specs will come down a bit, as at present I will need to replace my whole system making it a very expensive option at the moment (also more time to save).

I have the Rift CV1 (after using the DK2 for several months). While I agree that the resolution may not be the best (a very good monitor will beat the current VR headsets) the level of immersion is incredible. If I were to say VR is a game changer I don't think I am wrong. The only downside (for me) is that I have to switch to the monitor when I use the SRV, otherwise I get motion sick!

Ditto on all remarks (except that I did not have a DK2).

I'm sure second gen will be better; but don't underestimate how good it is now.
