Who still has the shades load on game start up?

I noticed there's an option to not have the compute shades load everytime you start the game. Is there any advantage to leaving this option on other than the very first time you run the game or update drivers?

You only need it on in the two cases you listed and one other afaik. The other case is on updates to the game.

the option controls when the shaders are loaded. On-demand or on startup of the game. If you do it on-demand, these shaders not currently loaded will load when needed ...causing a pause in some cases when something like a planet comes into view.

Loading all the shaders at startup makes the startup time take a bit longer (compiling only occurs if needed) but the shaders are ready to use in the game without having to request the load.

If you have gobs of ram (who doesn't anymore?) and a half decent video card. It's always better to load at startup.

Well in that case I'll leave it on then

I leave it on auto.
If the game feels like loading them then it can and does.
It doesn't bother me as it is so fast anyway. On my PC It takes a few seconds at most.

It won't turn it off anyway. I think the most it does is shorten the time. I have it turned off but you still get the loading screen, but not for as long. I think there are two components to the shader screen: warming up shaders and preparing shaders. I think the turn off option only affects one of them.

I can't prove this, but it seems to me that some of the folks posting about graphical bugs have it turned off. I'd play it safe and leave it on ;)

HELP!

I have 3 accounts, with the SHADER PREPARATION ON STARTUP turned OFF, but in all 3 accounts, it still performs the shader preparation. Does anyone know how I can turn it off?

Note. I know it will do it regardless, if I change my graphics card, drivers, or after a game update, and I'm cool with that.

I always thought it was feeding the hamster, but rep for enlightening post.
Except I've run out of rep.

I leave it on, not for any technical reason, but because it's like strange blast off countdown before I enter the game.

That's all.

It's an extra 6 seconds of loading before the menu shows up, so I've never seen any reason to turn it off. I'm usually still fiddling with my headset during that time anyway.

well, at my place it is almost a minute, so it is bigger for me; how can i put it off (and is that wise, kind of looks like not??)

If you don't do it at start up, the work will be done on an as-needed basis while the game is running. That will probably cause the game to stutter, each time a particular shader is needed. I read the linked pages and it looks like the main use of shaders is to draw planets. If you see extra stutter it-game when a planet first comes into view, you should probably turn shader pre-load back on.

According to the linked info in a previous post...

"...We cache this process in a file called GpuWorkTable.xml (which you can find in the same location as AppConfig.xml shown here).

If you believe that the first-run process happens every single time you load the game then it's very likely you'll not find the GpuWorkTable.xml file in your installation. Usually this indicates that the game has been told that it cannot write to that location which suggests that the game was installed as an administrator and is now being run as a non-administrator or another similar permissions issue."
