Newcomer / Intro Why are my main thrusters reversing when I'm in combat?

So I'm in combat and I pass the oncoming enemy ship. I whip around using my joystick and maneuvering thrusters.
Suddenly my main thruster snaps into full reverse. I'm running 50% power so I have maneuverability. I hit forward thrust to catch up (sometimes hit boost), but when I whip around, my thrusters go into reverse.
I'm a sitting duck.

NO, I am not hitting my reverse thrusters. It does it with flight assist off or on and especially when I try to swing around after a boost strafe run.

HELP!! This is driving me nuts.

An actually useful note: We do this pretty frequenly on purpose because of chaff. If you fire chaff at that point they're going to have a devil of a time shooting you (unless they're using fixed like dirty peasants).

I know that the default x55 setup has a reverse thrusters bind on one of the two buttons on the back of the throttle (the ones to the right of the rocker control. It caught me out a few times, until I realised it was there.. Could you have discovered something similar?

If you hit Flight Assist to OFF then thrusters won't stay constant and will alter with ship movement, and could get you in reverse. I sometimes 'blip' FA off for short bursts to avoid 'spirals of death' in close combat. I'm not good enough to be FA off for long, but sometimes I notice the thrusters are in reverse so when I FA On again I also hit 50% forward thrust.

Yes. it does it with FA on or off. Even when I just pull back on the joystick after full throttle without thruster assist, (remember default is 50%), as the speed declines from 100% to 50%, it quickly drops to zero and almost instantly goes in reverse thrust at 50% or better. It seems like its the flight mechanics, but if my thruster is set at 50% it should never decrease below that unless I force it lower with my throttle.

SpydersByte, I thought of that but there are times when I like to go in reverse with a wimpy target and just fire as they are persuing me. But I take a real pounding from the Anaconda's. The bots have unrealistic maneuverability and speed.
Since I'm flying an Asp, the damage costs some real bucks (like 30,000cr to 150,000cr) depending on how badly I get trounced. Yeah, I have shield cells but they occasionally hit me with the plasma blast and my shields are gone.
Anyhow, I may have to resort to your suggestion.

Ummm, momentum? If I flip fast enough in a heavy ship (well I only fly heavy ships atm...) the ship momentum is huge and even with FA ON, the thrusters are not strong enough to negate your momentum, so if you flip 180 degrees, the ship will still move to your original heading a.k.a straight backward, the indicator moves to indicates that you are now reversing, it does not change your thruster settings to reverse. At least I think that's what you're experiencing.

A quick flip can result in "backward" momentum, yea, but I don't think that's what he's experiencing.

That's your choice, but the forward only option is the only thing that can 100% counter your issue. If you still want to be able to thrust backward you can still set it to forward-only and then bind a key to hold that will reverse your throttle so 50% is now -50%. That's your best option.
