Why Are Space Legs and Atmospheric Landings Such a Hot Topic?

Perhaps with 3.0, they could do a preliminary spacelegs "appetizer" inside the ship. Similar to what the Flight Simulator series does. Effectively a "free camera" to see inside the ship in all the corridors and cargo area, and "black out - signal lost" when reaching the hull edges. Like someone who posted above, a "blackout" transition to the free interior moving camera.

Similarly, with 3.0, they could do a few very simple atmospheric planets. Like basic grass bushes in a desert, volcanic planet with primoridal soup "puddles". A "tatooine" like planet with the most basic atmosphere. Introduce sand effects for the SRV. Simple gameplay could be mining/shooting outcrops for diamonds/rubies/gold nuggets etc. Or setting up moisture vaporators for future Toshi-like stations. :D

"junior devs"? hardly, the slider features and modeling with holo-me avatar/character design I thought was on par with Skyrim or better.

My feeling is that the whole space legs thing started because most of us are sitting in uncomfortable chairs that are basically rubbish and the idea of getting up and walking around "in game" gives us the false perception that our bums will get a little circulation going and start to feel better.

I have room scale VR, so I can physically do this already. Nothing like a longer Supercruise flight to stretch your legs, and lean against the canopy of your ship, staring out at the stars. :D

I was being faecitious about the junior devs thing. More a statement about the "working on it for a year". Which is a transparent exaggeration of the timescale necessary for such a feature. That claim is more about release scheduled than actually having dev'd it. ;-)

Same with the ships. Frontier I'm sure have another 30 of them ready to go, but will drip feed them four a year and then "all the rest" when Star Citizen finally goes live.

Why?
It would add to the whole 'You are a space pilot doing space things' thing. I don't recall reading any sci-fi or watching any series where all the interaction was solely ship to ship and only in space or on non-atmospheric worlds. If you want to live that space pilot fantasy then space legs and atmospheric landings would add to that.
So, done well, it would add to the game no end.

That doesn't mean it wouldn't be a huge challenge in terms of design, general resources and technology. I think it would be all those things, especially if you do want to do it well and I believe FD would want that.
So, nice to have if we can have them but I'm willing to be patient and accept they may not happen at all.

I'd also say the devs have been fairly clear they would like to do these things. I'd suggest atmospheric landings of one strip or another have even been said to be a thing that will happen.. I wouldn't hold my breath though.
