Why are there so many haters of FDEV on this forum? A nickname is need for these folks.

For the most part, I've found the community here to be pretty friendly and helpful and most off al, civil. So as a result, I've found myself participating more in this forum recently, more than I have in any other forums over the last 10 years. I've tried to help out when and where I might add some value. To be candid, I got burned out on discussion forums for about 10 years ago because of all the flaming and uncivil conduct that seemed to be inevitable. That doesn't appear to be the case here. Kudos to the members for maintaining a welcoming environment.

However, what baffles me to no end are the number of folks that flame the developers of the game. To FDEV's credit, they are staying above it all by not dignifying some of the posts with responses.

Some of the recent threads regarding what will or will not be in Odyssey are a great example of what I'm talking about. I mean for Chrisakes, the game isn't even out yet. Sheesh!!! How can people possibly hate a game so much that hasn't even been released yet? ???what???

But I see many other earlier posts going back to the beginning with the same negativity. These are clearly people who cannot be happy no matter what. These are folks that if FDEV walked on water, they complain "that's because they can't swim".

So I put the question to the group, why is there so much animosity towards the developers? I mean it's clearly a minority opinion but if you don't like it... Well, as the saying goes "don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out." :giggle:

This phenomena deserves a nickname, how about "The Clan of the Perpetually Indignant" or perhaps "The Clutching Pearls Squadron"?:p Please post your suggestions for a nickname below.

OK. Pardon the interruption and now back to your regularly scheduled program

I've been on far more toxic game forums than these. I think it's just the nature of the internet, social media and gaming in general; it seems to bring out the worst in some people.

For the most part, I actually find the histrionics on these forums rather entertaining. It amuses me how people can lose all sense of perspective and self-awareness over a mere video game. Humans are such strange creatures. 🍿

Opinionated people post their opinions on a forum shocker ;)

There are fanboys/girls too, frankly neither extreme is interesting to read or particularly useful feedback imo, when you will love everything even if it's pants, or hate on everything no matter how cool it is there are no interesting points made, no common ground, no point trying to change opinions, at both extremes.

No point giving either extreme a special name either, that's just furthering the divide & if there's one thing this tiny sub-set of a specialised community doesn't need it's even more segregation.

So by all means wax lyrical about the stuff you like & why you think it's so awesome, and enjoy the views of others as they share their own passionately held views, because if we all agreed on everything it would be boring as hell.

Compared to what I have seen on other forums, this one is tame. This forum seems filled with a lot more people in the middle than the extreme haters/devotees of the dev and game. How we argue back and forth between ourselves regarding features/modes/behaviors/etc does get heated at times though.

I love the game, but Fdev does drop the ball now and again, and they often seem so insulated from the game in a way that makes many think they don't really care.
However, the case more often than not when I have a complaint, is that they are not giving me quite what I want. So, I stamp my feet, raise a little fuss, and get it out of my system. No real hate involved. And who knows, maybe they hear me, and do something about it. The game's forums are the place for that.

PS, I still want them to fix the ridiculous 32 key per device issue that other sim games had figured out back in 2005. stamp, stamp, grumble, grumble...!

Some are toxic, most are critical. There's a difference. I've found that the more people love something, the more they criticise it. Especially when they are skeptical or contrarian types.

A lot of the criticism comes from a deep knowledge of the game, and hundreds of hours of experience. It's like being in a jaded relationship. You can't stand to hear them tell that stupid story again, because you've heard it a million times, but you love them because they provide some form of stability in your life.

Disappointment is a powerful thing...

especially after the marketing department:

A) promises everyone, everything
B) tells everyone that THEY are really excited
C) tells everyone that THEY think WE will really..... REALLY like it
D) actually keeps back as much information as possible

with the result that no one expects what is actually delivered.

It is then up to the individual to decide if the latest thing is good, half baked or a disaster, which sets their personal level of disappointment.

ED fans come to forum to point out issues with ED.
FD never does anything about it.
Repeat.

Hang out here for a couple months and you will see that a new complaint rarely ever comes up. It is the same pile of problems that collects dust year after year. I personally have never witnessed a developer that refuses so steadfastly to fix anything, it's remarkable really. Like the guy who just complained in the Suggestions forum about getting fines while rescuing people from a burning station. Been that way for years, FD doesn't give two pence. Players would migrate to another spaceflight sim . . . if one existed. This is the only option we have, and nothing ever gets fixed. Maybe this is why FD doesn't care to fix stuff; what are we gonna do? Go play another spaceflight sim?

That's why the forum has so many of what you call "haters".

As far as you asking why people are bashing EDO just by looking at it, well . . . look at it. Most gamers have spent so many thousands of hours playing FPS that they really only need a short clip of an FPS' gameplay to be able to judge it's relative quality level. EDO's FPS gameplay is low tier, flat-out and guaranteed. Maybe there's more to EDO than FPS, but they haven't shown a drop of it. We can only judge what they show us.

dunno, is there much animosity towards the developers? you'll need to illustrate what you mean with a few examples.

it's easy to get carried away but before discussing this we should really have a clear understanding and agreement on what constitutes hate and animosity, because it might be simple criticism, satire or even sarcasm, none of which is undesirable. i would be very surprised if "dev hate" were a widespread and concerning issue in this forum mainly because it is explicitly forbidden by the forum rules and would put the moderator team in a very bad light, you really should be able to back your accusations with something more than agitated antics.

so what at you even talking about? 😅

OP maybe means, hate the hate!

Would this be like a double negative and be a positive?

it's a false positive.

i mean, i have collected a few bans for "employee harassment" simply for questioning specific decisions of developers, rulings which i would consider overzealous in all cases, not even remotely hate or animosity. sarcasm, probably. i can assure the mods around here will have none of that.

op should tell us where he is pulling that from.

Greetings,

Elite Dangerous is a game where a player is playing for many hours to advance but if a player messes up they lose their expensive ship and start over in a Sidewinder. That causes a lot of friction. As a player advances new challenges are added and if a player isn't patient, careful, learning from experiences and making risk assessments as they advance taking on more challenges well reapply that cool looking cosmetic paint job they bought for the Sidewinder.

Then look at every Forum any game manufacturer ever put online and it is all mostly negative? Why. Because the 500,000 players who love the game don't say much!

If a player asks for help playing the game they are going to get an answer on the ED Forum. Note some trolls act as new players looking for an argument. Check their profile. Yes, they may have to wade through silly comments (although some are really funny) and others hating ED will have their own agenda but there are many players who love ED monitoring the Forum willing to help. We don't talk much. Many new players loving the game try to answer but they are not always good at it. YouTube videos are the same.

When I'm playing ED on an amazing Acer curved widescreen I can play the game and also see the ED Forum at the same time. If both the game and the Forum gets boring I log off. So maybe I can help or not.

So don't try to put a nickname to those who post negatively on the Forum. It is a common reply for any game Forum. Click on their avatar then seeing their previous posts and that is how many play ED negatively on the Forum. We all play differently.

Regards

FD get it easy compared to some devs.

I don't see many people around here who hate FD. Very few actually. Sure, plenty of people who critique certain design decisions made by FD, but those aren't always the same people. I've been heavily critical over certain things FD have done in the past but I remain a fan of ED overall.

A lot of those who spend their time complaining about FD's mechanics and whatnot in ED (and other games, remember there are other game forums here) will still play those games.

I think one of the reasons why you see "negativity" about ED and FDev on the forums is that ED is an open-ended sandbox game. There is no "Congratulations, you Won!" screen. Lots of time and energy gets put into the game, with little "fulfillment". As a result, people will keep playing it, until they get bored or frustrated with it. Kind of like a cat with the laser pointer Red Dot - the cat can never "win" at that game either. Play with a cat using the Red Dot for long enough, and all you will end up with is a very agitated, frustrated cat that tried again and again but was never able to actually catch and kill something.

If you can set a personal "end-game goal", like reach triple-elite, own all the ships, earn 10 billion credits, visit Beagle Point, or whatever, then good for you - but the game does nothing to encourage you to do this.

Thus, many veterans of the game have a "jaded, seen it all" attitude to what has actually already been implemented in the game, and yearn for something new and improved. Whether those "new and improved" things are actually new things, or things that were promised/declared/hoped-for features announced long ago but never implemented, is irrelevant. These people still hang around on the forums, partly because they've made friends/associates/rivals here and partly hoping for news of their longed-for improvements.
