Why are these advertised features not available in-game?

I've never understood why simulating lens flare is a good idea, considering that people with real cameras are always trying to get rid of it.
You said it yourself - because it simulates real cameras/lenses, and many people like ED's style of modelling 'realistic' environments.

An option to turn it off would be desirable for those who dislike the effect, but it shouldn't be removed entirely.

the settlement lights are the easiest way to showcase lens flairs, however im fairly sure you can get lens flares from stars also.
OK, thanks - interesting!

I'm far away from the bubble and so haven't seen any settlements (let alone settlement lights) for a while, and I am not able to recreate this effect on star light.

Nevertheless, I'm willing to concede that this feature evidently does exist in-game. 👍

1 down, 2 to go!

I have just found out that lens flares are related to the "FX Quality" setting in game. If you have this disabled then you might not see them appear.

FD is desperately trying to get EDO's performance up to decent levels so it can launch to console and avoid EDO being a net loss.
Yea, but if you remove all the stuff that makes ED special, station interiors ablaze with fire, smoke and debris, the hazing across planets horizons, ridiculously low LOD popin, star colour etc etc etc who else is gonna buy it?
All this missing stuphs is becoming quite well known now and their updates now feel more like tinkering than anything else.
Update 8 was supposed to be their A team working on optimisation since before 7 dropped but I see no evidence of that in game.
They are all lies to trick you into buying the product.
The UK trading standards office are pretty strict about how much lying you can get away with in your ads (ie none - tho' exaggeration for effect is ok). I can't recall the game but they forced a major company to withdraw all their TV ads for a game shown with the message 'in game footage' at the bottom of the screen.

Since when does anybody's eyes produce lens flare?

Ideally, I suppose, it might be nice (and viable) for FDev to add a bunch of "effects" to the camera suite for people to play with when taking arsty screenies but it really shouldn't be present in any first-person view.

They don’t. But their curved glass helmets would.

As an earlier poster said - it has to do with the FX quality settings.

Yes, they lied about EDO to pump up presales. No, they aren't going to admit or even acknowledge it. For Stonks! 🤑

Honestly, I don't think the atmospheric things they removed (if they were intentionally removed) are particularly resource intensive, and removing them didn't result in any noticeable improvement in performance between alpha and launch.

Anecdotally, the real FPS killers seem to be the scatter rock system in boulder/bio-heavy areas (performance somewhat improved since launch), transparency shaders (mostly fixed), poor culling in interiors (unsure), NPCs/AI logic (better in some instances, got worse in others), and unexplained issues where FPS is fine at first and then crashes in the same area (may be related to AI).

Flying around above a planet, within the atmosphere but high enough that scatter rock issues didn't impact FPS, my performance has never been drastically worse than Horizons, even back in Alpha. Which makes me think the atmospheric effects, even the ones in Alpha, are/were quite resource inexpensive.

I have a hunch they've just broken them in an update, and it hasn't been fixed either because they can't work out how they've done it (spaghetti code), or it wasn't high priority because other things were higher on the issue tracker.

I didn't know what lens flare was until this post. I get it on a settlement quite often, when looking towards or at a light source - well its seems that way, usually when focusing on something or being shot at while running making me think there is someone running in from the side, gives me a good shock. Its never at a time when I want it. Cant say I would miss it, if it were gone, but don't see it there all the time.
