Why are threads locked when people bicker? Why not tempban and purge?

Seems to me like if you don't like a thread, you can just get a mod to pull the nuclear option by baiting the community involved into repeatedly defending lines-of-thought around their opinions. BOOM. Thread dead.

Uncool. Why don't those users get a tempban and their comments stricken from the thread (or covered in spoiler tags) instead of giving in to terrorism?

I’ve seen entire gaming communities destroyed by that. The ED community doesn’t deserve that at all.

Valueless is a major assumption.

There is a "report post" button. A thread can't violate bickering/insult rules, users and their posts can.

It's upsetting that rapid, serious discussion is discouraged by this at the end of the day, and I hope that efforts be taken in pursuit of fairness for all well-meaning users, their hopes and their dreams, moving forward.

Why not just debate the topic without flinging handbags about? Seems like a reasonable response.

I'll have you know I have this large black Gucci handbag, alligator skin (real, not plastic) and it's been filled with six lead pipe sections, two 3-pound weights, six tissues (one sneezed in, sorry), and a half-eaten hamburger and it's ready for war, baby!

Except one person's bait is another person's opinion.

In before the close :)

How much for the rest of that burger?
