Why are we still arguing about open v solo, ganking, griefing, etc.?

Because as long as there are "competitive" attitudes, some of us will always question "why"?

Why do some believe they're simply "entitled" above all others, for example? Arrogance?

Not sure if aware ironic statement is ironic or not. This is very perceptive. But possibly not actually understood.

The problem is that NPCs are too weak and have crappy builds. We all get spammed by the bots looking for tasty cargo but they are so easy to kill or evade that players get comfortable with a low level of difficulty. ....
So can you please explain the difference between attacking an NPC that is incapable of defending themself or attacking a PC that is incapable of defending themself?

After 2 years I'm still reading threads debating the pros and cons of open v solo. Most often the debate focuses around ganking and griefing. Why? It's so frustrating to read the same thing over and over with the same complaint.

ED is a MMO. Open should be the jewel in the crown. Discouraging players from playing in open for any reason is just dumb. It doesn't matter why they play solo, just that they do. If we want a vibrant MMO community, then we should not be discouraging players from playing in open. If you are a ganker, griefer or just see yourself as a player who likes killing other players because the game allows it, then just think twice. If the P v P seems like an unfair match, then it probably is. This would be big first step in getting players back into open.

If killing other players is your thing, then there are easy ways to do this without ruffling feathers:

- Join a P v P group.
- Invite friends for matches.
- Find players who want consensual P v P (with report crimes off).
- Stick to players who are "wanted" (we all know the risks of being wanted).
- Give Power play a shot (custom made reservation for hunters and prey).

If you P v P with players who are ready to take you on, then not only will it be more fun if you win, but even if you don't you will probably take something away from the experience and be a better (more skilled) player because of the experience.

A griefer will never look for a fair fight, they are the internet bullies in life. They look for those who they can belittle, beat up and make fun of to make themselves feel better all at the expense of those who they tread on. This is why you will never find a griefer taking on hard targets or looking for one v one fights. They will always pick on the ones that have no ability or little ability to fight back. Open play is full of people like this, they hang around at CG's ramming other players so they get blown up, they stream snipe explorers on their return trip to sell the data, they look for traders to blow up and never ask for cargo, they also fly pure combat builds and look for new players or players in smaller ships to kill safe in the knowledge they can't be hurt themselves.

True griefers will go to great lengths just to make other players mad, even to the point of letting themselves be destroyed after the deed is done. They are sociopaths in real life.

Probably cos theres nothing else to argue about...give the illusion of an active playerbase when the forum is jumping up and down at a time when players are leaving until something cool happens...Q4 fer example. Between now and then, its just more of the same ^

That's depressing.

The difference? I don't do either so I'm not sure what the response is you are looking for. I was thinking about from it from the perspective of the person under attack. My point was that when weak players get killed by NPC no body cares, it's part of the game. When they get killed by a player though every one gasps and points a quaking finger at the "Greifer".

"Yes, but..".

There's only so much I can explain past that without getting a doctorate.

I can't disabuse people of the notion that video game actions are somehow a reflection of IRL even by being a living example of its falsehood, nor can I rein in people who actually do enjoy annoying other people just because it's possible. I can point out that there are far too many absolutes and stereotypes thrown around here instead of a rational and nuanced approach, but apparently the soup du jour is extreme polarization.

Welcome to modern society.

hm ... isn't that what you wanted from this thread, people calling players psycopaths?

You poor thing, would be hard always thinking the worst about people. It's clear from my post that what I want is a vibrant open community. I'm happy to leave the salt to you.

Nope, it isn't. It's a single player game which was added with a shared BGS and some multiplayer features.
Originally, the server part was optional, but they couldn't implement it.

Open is PvP enabled. Whoever participates consents to playing PvP.
Multiplayer without PvP is PG
Personally, I reserve PvP for the forums.

Interesting. A couple of players have remarked on this. The tag line on a Google search of the ED site describes the game as "the definitive massively multiplayer space epic". If it sounds like a duck and walks like a duck...:)

In 2015?

But yes, I always look forward to my Thargoid Raid encounters, where I team up with 39 other CMDRs and spam DD, AoE and Debufs while occasionally including an SCB in my spell rotation. There is always discussion about the loot, but fortunately, we now get tokens that we can exchange for epic modules.

The true test of character is how you act towards other people when you are free from constraints. A multi-player game is an excellent lab for seeing that. I can say and do whatever I want wihout breaking any laws! There are good people and evil people. In RL the evil people are often constrained by laws to appear good, but in a game like this their nature becomes clear.

To say "but it's only a game" is to deliberately overlook the fact that behind the pixillated spaceship is a real person, when actually that's the whole point.

A more RL example is a restaurant. If you want to know what someone is really like, watch how he/she treats waiters and waitresses. This is a particular situation where social pressure doesn't force me to be polite or kind, so I'm only polite to them if it's in my nature to be so.
