Why are white dwarf exclusion zone much bigger than a neutron star zones?

I feel like the exclusion zone for the white dwarfs are way too big. Too big that the lines remain invisible. Neutron stars are so small that they're invisible. I know the invisible lines have been a problem for so long. FDev pls fix this.

I've been wondering the same thing. AFAIK white dwarfs are remnants of mostly red dwarf stars. So why aren't WD's having the same exclusion zone?

Half of the fun with WD stars is finding the point where the FSD can be supercharged rather than the ship being cooked ;)
If they are bothersome just remove them from your route planning, then the issue goes away.

Me, I love them, even if they are the only star class to cost me a couple of rebuys over the years :devilish:

I get so passive, making jump after jump, that when I hit a WD system it's an "OH SH aT!" moment.
Snaps me out of my funk.

It would make intuitive sense for the higher energy object and the more rewarding one to supercharge from (the neutron star) to be the more dangerous of the two.

But maybe there's some scientific or quasi-scientific reason I'm not aware of. White dwarfs are about the size of Earth, whereas neutron stars are about 20km in diameter. So maybe that's it. But then, neutron stars are much, much more powerful phenomena, as I understand them.

But I really don't know the maths. Probably something something inverse square law.

Many of us have raised this issue over the years and there's never been a modification or even an answer. 🤷‍♂️ .

The FSD boost was introduced at the time Michael Brookes was in charge, and he had expressed a wish for the devs to find a way to get around the galaxy more quickly. I have a suspicion (I am speculating) that neutron stars had similar exclusion zones before launch, but Brookes said "that'll kill player enjoyment if we leave it like that" and so the neutron stars, which are more numerous (I think) were modified to be 'safer' and the white dwarfs were left as they were.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. Dev logic might have said "the neutron stars are smaller so we give them a smaller exclusion zone" :D

I always thought that the neutron star exclusion zones were actually larger but the jet cones went out so much farther from the gravity well since the neutron stars are so much more energetic. But I've never done anything to check that, so it may just be headcanon that I made up.

I can't really think of a science based explanation to it. The neutron star is hotter, more energetic, the magnetic field is an absolute monster, and it's basically a massive x-ray source even outside the beams as that's it's temperature range. Then there's the tidal forces.

It seems like they shrunk the exclusion zone on NS sometime back which made all the NS basically easy-mode to boost from. It used to be the slower lazy ones had shorter tails compared to the exclusion zone making making it harder to get a flat entry into the jets, where the ones with massive fast spinning tails looked worse but were actually easier to boost from.

I'm not sure why they made the WD the biggest threat but I do enjoy boosting off of them. You have to keep your head in it because there is not much margin for error.

I can go along with that - it agrees with my own observations and experience (y)

Half of the exploration I'm doing these days is trying to find new WD classes (or at least the 1 I'm sure must exist - I read somewhere that the bubble has a couple of unique classes not found in the wild - yet!)

Just last week I decided that it was about time I started using jump boosts. I'd put it off before because I felt the manual part was faffy but was pleased on my return to the game to read that the route plotter got a big upgrade.

I watched a YouTube video and read a guide. These were both really dramatic, ultra detailed, step-by-step (like 10+ points) guides that, in my estimation, make the actual process appear way more daunting than it was when I tried it myself.

I understand the DA exclusion zones are bigger but the plume always extends well clear. The guides suggest all sorts of complicated preparations for every second but I just full throttle, pitch, throttle down in the plume and throttle out to jump after 5 seconds. Never hit the zone yet. I love it and happily leave the option ticked by default. I'm considering slotting two amfu modules to my Asp and hitting the neutron highway. It just seems almost effortless.

I only hit difficulty once because I overshot before the 5s was up so turned round and got a bit close.

Am I missing something? Are some DA stars more grumpy than others? Have I just been lucky?

^ I'd had the same experience over many WD's until I hit this one that took out my Python... twice! I think there is a class that has a very short tail that may end just outside (or maybe just inside) the exclusion zone. I always try to just "tickle the tendrils" of the WD's so it wasn't that I was blithely barreling into the cone :) There's a graphic somewhere showing approach strategies to the different classes, but my google-fu is weak today and I can't find it...

Edit - I think it's this and the DA'class are the toughies.

@Ydiss - Yes, some WD stars are certainly 'more grumpy' than others (in my experience) and the exclusion zone can be very close to the limit of the plumes.
Most I've encountered have been easy enough to get a boost beyond the zone, but the 2 that 'got' me properly were marginals... Some can be escaped, if luck is on your side, but...

As I have been 'chasing' classes this year I've met with a lot - but not had the need to boost from them as the next target star would be within the jump range of the ship - only a few of the ones I've met would be troublesome had I needed the boost.

Yeh, it's DA stars I've seen. Might be a matter of monitor variances but I can see very faint blue haze at the very end and aim for that. But never see the exclusion zone except at the very start.

If I do get caught I'll admit it though :D

Good man!

I was sent to the rebuy screen twice, by the same WD, in the same game session... It was about a month after I started playing and had never boosted... 3rd time was lucky!

Only twice since then have I messed up and lost my ship, both within a few jumps of my Colonia base so no major loss of data... But, dangers aside, go out and enjoy the variety of WD's (and NS) and have a lot of fun playing chicken 🍻

Do you remember the system? Not to try to "outdo" you, just for science so I can see if it's different.

In the bubble while I was a 'n00b' it was one of the D class ones close to Enayex...
Around Colonia, a couple from these:

most of those are from this year...
(and a few more from this account and my 2nd alt - above is my main account Ratkatcher)
...sorry I can't be more specific
(I'm on a quest for the DCZ class!)
