Newcomer / Intro Why boost speed with FA off is lower than with FA on?

My top speed with FA off is 525m/s but 536m/s with FA on. Is it a bug?
The ship just goes strait forward, no any lateral or vertical velocity.

My guess would be a problem with automatic brakes (the thing that causes the speed bleed-off above your top speed). Perhaps with F/A on it's applied once you've reached the top boost speed and with F/A off it's applied immediately after exceeding the normal top speed.
Or your max thrust in F/A on isn't applied 100% in the first place (have you tried measuring the speeds from stand-still?)
Or you're not actually going completely straight forward. It's impossible to get a completely precise vector with F/A off due to lack of any kind of instrumentation.

Ultimately, I'm afraid it could be one of those things in Elite that you try to get to the bottom of, only to give up eventually and think "Oh well, it is what it is"

I use KBM, so to measure speed I do the following:
1. Fix the position of ship with FA on and zero throttle.
2. Turn FA off in case of FA off test.
3. Apply full thrust forward with a key.
4. Boost, boost, boost.

I do not touch mouse for this test at all.

Try the test from stationary without throttle input, too. Just press boost button once and record the max speed it reached.

I tried this with flying full throttle forward, then applying boost, no other control input.
2 pips to ENG, my AspX gets 2 m/s faster peak speed with FA on, consistently.
4 pips to ENG, the difference is 3 m/s.

I did more tests today with my Chieftain running strait forward (I used only keyboard to avoid any vertical/lateral drift):
1. UI shows 377m/s top speed and 540m/s boost speed.
2. Top speed is the same for FA on and off (377m/s)
3. Boost speed with FA on - 540m/s
4. Boost speed with FA off - 529m/s
5. Boost speed doesn't depend on throttle position or forward thrust in both cases (FA on/off)
The only case when I was able to reach maximum boost speed with FA off was to slightly use vertical/lateral thrusters.
The same situation is with Krait MKII (388/533m/s) but the different was lower - 3 m/s

Really interesting stuff.
Shame my ship can't boost, I'd do some testing myself.
Wonder if it's intentional or not. Lateral and vertical thrusters are stronger with F/A off and the speed fall-off from boost to normal top speed is slower so it may be to intention to "balance" things. (wouldn't be the first nor last weird balance thing in the game).
But honestly, I'm more inclined to believe it's a bug or and oversight in physics engine. 🤷‍♂️

Well, well, well.....

Just jumped on a did a quick test in my cobra III.

Max Boost speed listed at 619m/s.

FA-on I got 619m/s
FA-off I got 614m/s

Tried both Horizons and EDO. Same on both...

Unless I have missed that over the last 3000+hrs of flying I'd say it's something that has been introduced recently... Bug or not depends on if it was intentional.
