Why can we only jump to stars?

I was trying to get to Gliese 2026, but could get no nearer than around 60 Ly.

It occurred to me, then, to wonder why I couldn't just jump into the black between stars. I had plenty of fuel and an FSD that could have covered the distance in two jumps, but I was stuck.

I think a "point and jump" capability would add to the fun of exploration and open up areas currently off limits. It would also give a good reason to buy that second fuel tank.

Because the FSD uses the gravity well of stars/black holes to exit flight and fuel use increases exponentially as you fly closer to your max distance.

Then how are we supposed to get to the fabled "dark systems" when they are eventually included in the game?

How about an FSD expansion module to allow for starless jumps? It'll cost you, though.

On the face of it, this might seem to be a bit barmy. However, after the brain boxes back in civilisation develop a deep space scanner that can detect non celestial objects between stars systems we'll be able to detect those fabled generation ships and go and visit them. ;)

Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star, or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it.
Sorry couldn't resist. :D

By failed jump, that doesnt mean you would end up further than your current jump range though.

Dark systems woulds still be more massive than nothing.

Also System to system has always been the way it was done in Elite, missed jump could get you in the middle of nowhere somewhere around your previous location and destination, but without any control over where you'd end up. If we ever get this implemented then maybe you could reach a distant star with some luck, if we can still force them to happen.

I wasn't advocating deliberately failed jumps. I'd like to be able to jump, say, 25Ly in any given direction without the need to land at a large stellar body.
