Why Can't Frontier Get More Server Capacity? 😡

Aaaannnnd! The servers are offline again because everybody wants to experience the new update. Did Frontier learn nothing after the same happened when the PowerPlay 2 update dropped.

Are we going to experience the same thing of the game being completely playable because you can't connect to the server every evening and weekend... AGAIN!?

Why not just order more capacity on AWS when they know they'll need it?

This is painful and ridiculous 😡

The trick is probably knowing in advance how much extra capacity you will need for how long, then being able to afford it.

There might well be a lead time issue as well.

Yes, there's a lead time, but I know it's never more than about 24 hours. And they've 10 years of usage data, does this not tell them anything?

What makes you believe it is related to server capacity and not other issues?

Steam chart doesn't indicate an unusually huge upsurge in concurrent player activity.

This is not just Elite that's having problems though, if you look at downdetector website you'll see a lot services are suddenly in the red. This is bigger internet problem at the moment.

Just had a look. Only Venmo, Reddit, and Pokémon are highlighted. There's little doubt in my this is frontier not being ready with sever capacity, as that's exactly what happened last time.

Not everybody plays on Steam, but it's not surprising to me you're not seeing a major uptick in players given that none of us can get in.

This just in from FDev: It is with sad hearts we bring you this news:

"Curtis our lead Hamster suffered a fatal accident this morning when he apparently exploded for no apparent reason while running on his server wheel. Sources at the farm say they believe it may have been caused by increased workload due to the recent "Trailblazer" update. Curtis was 2 years old and leaves behind a wife and 12 children".

It depends on which region you've selected. On US and UK there's a fair amount, while there's six on NL in the red. All at the same time, that's indicating a larger issue.

Also we hit 9000 players yesterday on steam alone and it didn't go down, now we were only just hitting 7500 when it went down.

Yesterday vs Today might be because yesterday they were doing some very aggressive load balancing, so it was taking well over an hour for a carrier jump. But I've not done that today so can't compare.

I get that, but from my point of view they're running a business, providing a service, and wanting us to spend more money with them. It's the equivalent of your internet connection going down every time there's a hole dug in the road, there's a definite equivalence there.

I pay more in a month for internet than I did for this game..... 4000 in-game hours ago.... I accept these things happen.

I get these things happen too. The problem is we're all supposed to learn from the mistakes we make. The exact same thing happened, at the exact same time, the very day after PowerPlay 2 dropped.

But it is a good indicator of the relative amount of concurrent users.

So anyway, do you have any evidence that the server issues are related to concurrent players and server loading as a result?

Or should I stick with my personal theory that it is related to the recent software updates, and things that need to be sorted out?

That very question is a trap, as you know as well as I do that no company will ever admit to them getting things wrong unless they're forced to.

All I can say is that I've built a good career on knowing how to identify these things. I'm sure I'm far from the only player with a decent job in tech too. When you've seen it across different businesses over a number of years, you learn to recognise the signs.

If that helps.

Sometimes I find it good to just back down when I realize I misspoke, without having sufficient information. Otherwise in my industry it is embarrassing.

There's plenty of information, loads of it.
  • A major update was released yesterday
  • We're currently approaching peak evening usage time
  • This update was highly anticipated
  • Exactly the same thing happened, at the same time, in the same way after the last big, much anticipated update only a few months ago
If you want to defend Frontier that's your choice. But saying things like, there's no information and you can't prove anything doesn't mean we can't make an informed guess, and doesn't mean we're not right.

If I'm not right, I'm not right, but I wouldn't bet my own money on that.

Just sayin'

It's not important to them. In general they tend to err on the side of "save money, maybe aggravate entire playerbase." I guess they figure it doesn't sufficiently turn off the types of customers they care about enough to cost them anything?
