Newcomer / Intro Why did they kill me?

I was in a warehouse, and needed to attract attention as I could not find anyone. I wanted to steal an identity for authorisation, but all the guards were level 0, so I threw a grenade into a deserted part of the warehouse and stood on a high gantry to see who came.

I had no illegal items or anything on the "warning circle" showing red (aside from low temperature).

Much later, a technician showing a yellow "alert" arrow on the radar saw me, said nothing so I approached him. Immediately, he said "there they are!" even though he had not seen me throw a grenade. He started shooting and so did a guard who came, but since my mission was a "no fatalities" one, I ran away without harming them or even drawing a weapon.

I raced around the perimeter of the small mining settlement back to my ship, but two guards were there and destroyed it. I still had nothing lit up red as illegal. They had no reason to assume I threw the grenade, it harmed no-one just made a noise so...

Why did they kill me? Is it bugged?

No, I wasn't the only intruder. There was another CMDR around.

I'm still unsure how hearing a noise, then seeing a non-hostile person (with no gun out) justifies them blowing up my ship on the ground?

I've been on bases before where they're in alert mode, after they've spotted a cut panel or something, and they've let me just walk past them while they search for a hostile.

I don't know, but it seems inconsistent and buggy.

Also seems daft failing the mission, which was simply to get a fossil, because the fossil is still there, I haven't killed anyone (the only stricture was it had to be non-lethal), and I can re-land with permission. So I could easily lift the fossil.

Probably an old friend tipped them off that you were there as a prank! Sadly, I cannot offer you constructive advice on this occasion but I am happy to see that you are still engaged with dangerous activities despite - or perhaps because of - the Indian summer. Fly Safe 07, Cmdr.

At least it had one happy outcome. It showed me the shields on my stealth-mission Cobra were paper thin. That situation is now being reversed.

Reasons to kill you.
  1. You were there and a stranger.
  2. It was getting near the end of the weak and they were behind on their body count.
  3. They thought you were a reporter.
  4. You were lurking on a gantry in suspicious manner.
  5. It was an accident, honest gov.
  6. They thought your ship was parked badly.

The presence of another cmdr complicates things. If the other cmdr did something to upset them and you'd been flagged as the same team, that might explain it.
For instance, when I've been hanging around at a settlement and another cmdr not in my team raises the alarm while I'm behaving, the cmdr gets flagged as red on my radar. Likewise, if I stealth-kill a wanted NPC, that can also mark me as hostile to the settlement (which would make the other cmdr see me as hostile even though I've not done anything to them).

A lot of behaviours get strange in odyssey when multiple players get involved.

That's just how the game is coded. From a real-life perspective, this doesn't make sense. This isn't real life though, it's just a game.

I don't like it either. I just accept it, since the alternative is to play something else. I don't want to play anything else :)

We weren't teamed.
That complicates things even more. The game acts bizzarely at times when it comes to AI-player allegiance when two non-teamed players are present at the same settlement both doing their own thing and one of them ticks the settlement off and the other doesn't.

totally haven't done this on purpose
I've totally never ever ever followed an apex down to a settlement, beat them to the ground, and jumped onto a roof before they disembarked
I absolutely didn't throw shield grenades around and fire audiomasked rockets into the sides of buildings to send the guards crazy while they were just trying to do their mission

I can only hope my grenade throw screwed things up for the other CMDR even more :D

I once met another CMDR by surprise inside a deactivated settlement's power room. Heck of a jump scare for both of us. I saluted, and they held fire. They went off to get materials, I was after specific data, so I had put a power regulator in and then the game crashed to desktop. By the time I got back in the instance they were making off with the reg towards their ship, I was in mine, missile racks deployed and it was so, so tempting to fire on them as they ran across the open ground and large pad.

I sent them a friend request instead.

Often best to park well away from the settlement and just SRV it in.

Today I popped in to visit my favourite Anarchy, and I was surprised to see the anti-personnel turrets firing at something on the ground. A few hundred yards away was a Krait Mk II, Military Composite armour, supposedly with hardpoints deployed though it was parked on the ground (point defence?). Some CMDR doing a massacre mission. And everything was marked hostile (red) including the CMDR, his ship, the settlement (docking permission unavailable etc) even though I hadn't attacked anything.

So I popped out my missiles and laser and despite being in a Cobra with lightweight armour I wasted his ship - after all, anarchists are people too. I think jumped in my SRV, dismissed my ship (lesson learnt!) and went to find the roof-hopping CMDR. He was an easy target in the air.

What seems odd is my contact list shows his vessel destroyed, but not the fact I killed him - sorry, critically injured, we can't kill other players - on foot and on the ground. Well, close to the ground. Inara shows it in my combat log, but I also have no notoriety. I thought the crime and punishment was changed so you got notoriety for killing other players. Or does it not count in an anarchy, and/or when defending a settlement against an attacking CMDR?

If it was a settlement owned by a faction with an anarchy government, there will be no bounty or notoriety. You can go on a "critically injuring" spree with no repercussions.

Here is a new stupidity.

You copy the ID of the power room technican, so now you ARE him, with the same authority.

You turn off the power.

How does it know you aren't him? Why would an alarm go off?
