Why did you stop playing Elite?

For me it was a bit of burn out.

I ran a experiment, I mined LTD's and maxed out my hold (cutter) and sold for roughly 750mill. it took about 5 hours from leaving dock to sale.
I then thought I would try to see how long it would take to make 750mill doing missions...
I found a high value metal extraction system on the edges of the bubble and off I went. Luckily, nearly every faction present in the system hated one pirate faction so there were many massacre and assassination missions all directed at one pirate faction so I could (after having reached max rep with everyone) pick up 3 or 4 massacre 30 pirates for 30 / 35 / 40 mill and then pick up 3 or 4 10mill haulage missions as well as pick up as many pirate assassination missions (they always were to the same pirate faction) for 1.5mill up to 2.5mill as well as any other available missions, it was usually a 3 system route, pick up haulage missions and as many massacre/assassination missions I could, head to the haulage destination system while killing everything that interdicted me, dock and pick up everything I could, head to the pirate system, kill as many assassination targets I could before my shield broke (they take a while, usually ran out of ammo before shields broke) and then do any planetary side missions I had, then off to the third system to pick up any available missions but mostly to pick up 540 tonnes of whatever commodity the first station needed and then do it all again...

I played nothing but elite and it took roughly 36 hours (3 or 4 hours every week night and maybe 5 or 6 on a weekend) to reach 750mill..

Once complete, I sat in my ship in the dock and was just ... no more.. I cant take no moreeeeeee

But, that was a while ago now and I am starting to get that Elite feeling again. I will never completely stop playing this game, just take a break now and again.

Mostly other games like:
  • Evochron
  • Empyrion
  • Space Engineers
  • X4
  • No Mans Sky
  • Satisfactory
  • Black Desert Online

All of these games have had consistent and meaningful updates in the same time Elite had... well... nothing.

Elite is a great game, but it's a hollow shell with no substance, a Jam Donut with no jam, a Pinata with no candy... A technical masterpiece of graphics, environments, and sound, but the gameplay is just.. meh.

Exploration: I've been to Colonia, Sag A, a handful of other places, it's pretty, amazing, but there are just so many airless planets and moons you can visit until you realize it's all really just the same.

The Thargoid storyline is an atrocious mess. It NEEDS a system like Eve Online, holding your hand and directing your way to the storyline to follow.
The crime and punishment NEEDS a massive overhaul to bring players back from solo

The addition of Fleet Carriers is absolutely useless to my style of play, so this entire update is a waste of time (for me), for something I'll never use, and never care about.

I've stopped playing entirely because it just isn't fun to login and realize nothing you do matters.
It's the lack of of prescribed gameplay I actually like about Elite.
So much of the gameplay in it is player group driven.
You do have to actually create in your mind a reason to do some things.
The story is one you make yourself.
It's not a fault, just a feature.
I do take the odd break from playing, but it draws me back as you can dip in and out as you fancy.
Just one question, more to OP than anyone, why if you don't like this game, do you feel the need to post on the forum? You don't need our permission, just stop playing, it really easy. You've had you fun with it, so move on.
👍

just like sandkid said I got so bored if it. I would start the game look at the screen for 10 mins and think what haven't I done that I haven't done a hundred times before. Then I worked out that the game is absolutley pointless, yes there is stuff to do and had fun doing it but it's pointless. The game needs to be completley re-written with direction and structure

But the player driven emergent gameplay can only last for so long, once you have done most things over and over, the lack of new things todo, or even worse, previous fun things todo got changed/removed!

I think No Man's Sky is a great example of one thing, adding new stuff, even if you do not care about what they added, as you can still go on your made up story of what you want todo. You do not need to engage in the overall bigger mission that NMS offers. Just look at all the changes and updates NMS have had and all the new game play options that have been made available, and then compare it to all the "new" things we can do in Elite.... We have got landing on planets. that was pretty neat, but then there have been virtually no added content for what we can do on planets.... we still have the one and only SRV. We got Multicrew, fun for specific things, and pretty much useless for other activities, We got a mining overhaul, where we now can blow up rocks and got a huge boost in how much credits we can now can earn per hour.

And most players of Elite Dangerous do like the game, but with so little new content to engage in and experience, you will hit a point where the game is no longer fun, and I think it is quite clear that many of these players do want to have more options of things todo in Elite Dangerous, preferably fun and engaging things. There are very few people that want to turn Elite Dangerous into something that would resemble WoW in space.
So people want the game to flourish and give us new reasons to be creating our own stories.

And with what other games don't you eventually end up repeating the same actions over and over?
🤔

Suggesting rewriting the game kind of misses the point. Elite is a game without formal direction and structure. It just the wrong game for you, nothing wrong with the game itself.

😁

No, it absolutely doesn't. The attraction of this game and the reason it keeps pulling me back is that I please myself what I do, how and wherever I want to do it.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of games out there with a rigid story based structure. You follow the predetermined path and reach the end, uninstall and move on to another title that follows the same old well trodden path, just with different characters.

Leave Elite just as it is, for those of us with an imagination, who can create our own story!

Last thing I really enjoyed was DW2 and that finished nearly a year ago.
Been playing the latest beta and mined about 9 billion (snoozefest) but not playing at all till the next release.
However with carriers in the last format seen on beta I won't be buying into that mess.
So looking like a long layoff coming for my Elite days.

Why if you don't like this thread, do you feel the need to come in and police this thread? You could just start your own "Why do you keep PLAYING Elite?" thread. You've had your fun with this thread, so move on.

We'll agree to disagree.
You've always had good points to make in the many posts you made over time.
Supprised you've had time to play at all 😉

Got bored about 18mnths ago (played since 2014). I cant seem to garner enthusiasm for the game anymore. I had fun, so no complaints. I got my moneys worth and more. TBH, i think Ive just fallen out with games in general. I'm reading more and doing other things like converting a campervan and riding motorbikes. I wish FD all the best.

Pvp ballance.. the FSS.. waiting for the new era.

(I still play for an hour or two evey month or two as i like to fly my viper round a haz for a bit to remember the good old days )

I stopped years ago due to the disastrous combination of mistakes that all came to a point on Xbox - Multicrew was released, but those who had hosted crews were getting hard-locked out. Even after some reinstalls, I became unable to log back in. In the weeks during this lockout, the event preparations were being made for the whole "Salome" deal, and Xbox was getting a token, yet meaningless, inclusion.

The lock got fixed very shortly before the event kicked off, but it was far too late to sign on or travel to participate in any way. What's more, some groups were promoted by Community Managers and some were not, so who got to participate was effectively picked by them. These groups excluded others, promised retaliation to those who even got close, etc, so the "community" event became a "these groups vs the community" event.

Of course, we remember how it all worked out, which was shady as possible. It all stank of an event that was supposed to be inclusive but ended up being the opposite, and it seemed like the winners, losers, and participants had been picked from the start.

So that was about 18 months off right there. Even when I came back, I didn't do it in the same way; I stopped making threads for Livestreams in the forums, stopped making threads for updates and news on the Xbox side.

I support the game, but the community engagement and handling has let me down too many times.

Stopped playing about 2 years ago. But weirdly still check in to the forums every couple of months.
It just drifted ever further from the game I was hoping it would be. An issue that for me at least is partially a consequence of making it multiplayer.
Most of my time playing was dominated by a sense of trying to convince myself that I was really enjoying it. A pressure I felt probably because I was a fan of the originals and so the world of Elite was important to me. But in the end I realised the effort wasn't really worth it.
It's all good though. I know many really enjoy it. It just turned out to be not the game for me. That's fine, but it makes me a tiny bit sad.
