Why did you stop playing Elite?

Stopped playing about 2 years ago. But weirdly still check in to the forums every couple of months.
It just drifted ever further from the game I was hoping it would be. An issue that for me at least is partially a consequence of making it multiplayer.
Most of my time playing was dominated by a sense of trying to convince myself that I was really enjoying it. A pressure I felt probably because I was a fan of the originals and so the world of Elite was important to me. But in the end I realised the effort wasn't really worth it.
It's all good though. I know many really enjoy it. It just turned out to be not the game for me. That's fine, but it makes me a tiny bit sad.
Yeah...agree with everything you said, I feel same way.

I totally agree about multiplayer...the modes when they were announced were a reason to celebrate as far as I was concerned, I wouldn't be forced to play with others if I didn't want to, which I didn't and still don't, not in Elite anyhow.

Looking back (isn't hindsight wonderful) I think that decision, to have modes was a huge mistake as it made the job of developing the game, catering for and balancing for each mode almost impossible. This is why I believe much of the content developed for ED missed the mark. It was just too difficult and too many compromises needed to be made on every feature.

If there is ever a sequel to ED I really hope they decide to pick one mode and stick to it...that mode being single player of course :)

I bought ED back in 2014 and played basically daily until shortly after the Gnosis debacle. I had basically ran out of new things to do, and FDev seemed content to leave the game in the exact same place until they eventually shut down the servers. The gnosis was just the last straw for me. At the time SC was making some good progress and looked to be becoming what FDev had promised for Elite back in 2012, so I moved over. I've been keeping an eye on things on this side of the fence, and this morning I got the good news which coincidentally comes just as SC is having a really hard time with server stability. I like symmetry :)

If you don't like staring at the vastness of space while in supercruise, then this game or space games in general are not your thing. This is a very specific niche and many of us only have this game to fulfill that itch of flying a spaceship while get a feeling of the scale of space.

Actually most (edit: many) of us fear this game will become less like it is now once 'New Era' hits.

'Mile wide inch deep' is just a cheap way of saying your are not familiar with the game - otherwise it also often said that the learning curve is very steep. In-between the stellar forge and the sheer complexity of outfitting, there is a lot to learn to play this game, saying it's lacking depth is nonsense.

No.

Played many space games, absolutely love space games.

Elite is the only one I left out of boredom despite so many shiny things well done like sounds and graphics.

Couldn't stand watching the same empty screen again and again. Élite is maybe for you, which is good but don't generalize to space games, because Elite is a different one.

I stopped playing because I gathered absolutely all the materials for the Ram Tah missions (thargoid samples), losing a ship in the process, and then when I got to the first guardian site to get the scans I need for the mission reward, I accidentally hit boost in my courier and cratered into a guardian structure at full speed. Then I ragequit and got into Subnautica for a while.

I'll definitely be back at some point.

The constant increase of illogical keybindings eventually drained my will to play. Having played since premium beta I now lurk in the shadows of this forsaken forum. ;)

THIS! And I just ran out of things that kept my interest, Elite x3 and just bored with the existing missions. I logged in a month ago and the key binds were all broken again and honestly I just logged out rather than sit and fix them again. Latest announcement though has me interested, I just hope the missions and NPC elements get improved as part of this new Era too!

Never stopped playing, just took an extended break just as many others do.

Repetitive missions, lack of thoroughly developed worlds to explore, etc. Even after having many hours invested, "Mile wide, inch deep" really does sum it up for me.

I've got hope for Odyssey, but I'm not going to get hyped for it until I see what it actually has to offer. Too many games on my backlog to be concerned with it just yet and since I'm working full time it also means I can afford to pick and choose where my money and leisure time is spent. I don't "need" a game to hold my attention 24/7/365 because I've nothing else to do with my life.

Was really stoked about the game when it launched and flew almost daily from the first day for about a year or so. Found myself triangle trade routes that felt good to me, did some small scale exploration, dipped toes into combat and once tried mining pre-collectors! Didn't really care for more dedicated grinding: I had RL work for that! Flew buckyball (and I have the bumper sticker from Sol->SgrA* to prove it!) and hung around at 'Rats and realized that most activities I participated in after the first few months were community driven. The CQC/Arena version was perhaps the first bigger thing that brought in cynicism (all the pre-marketing of it and then the outcome and the lack of updates to it) and versions/patches after that felt more insignificant than previous ones.

The game started to feel stale. The danger switched from the expected dangers of flying awesome and taking the universe by the limpets, to the real danger of carpal tunnel and frankly, boredom.

So I started booting up into the cockpit of my loved T-6E less and less, mostly only checking the new things after each update, and thinking "well, kinda nice/unnecessary/cool/silly", flying couple laps around a station or canyon, parking on orbit and nodding out for few months. Won't really consider myself "playing" E:D anymore, instead of just occasionally popping in to have a looksie.

I dunno. I guess I got cold since my toes were wet.

To be blunt, I stopped because it got boring. Every time I played, it felt like a chore, and became insanely repetitive. I (like many others) took part in the events a few years back with Salome and the traitorous toad that ended that event, and afterwards, the realisation that the game couldn't handle complex or live evolving, story-driven events (as opposed to pre-scripted things that happen) - it all helped me lose interest in it.

I check back in every now and then, as I'm a kickstarter backer, but now, years on, I just can't motivate myself enough to get back into something that doesn't appear to have changed much, beyond new grind-based time-sinks to complement the old ones.

I havent played for a few years got bored of the limited, repetitive gameplay. I last travelled out to a community goal well outside of the inhabited zone, and couldnt be ever bothered to fly back. I think I am still there lol. I feel like playing again now but I have so many games to play ....

So being able to move your entire collection of personal ships in one go to a largely arbitrary position in the galaxy is currently possible? Or being able to repair your power plant away from current populated systems is doable without a FC?

The above are just two of the features that FCs are slated to add, engaging they may not be BUT certainly noteworthy.

With specific regard to exploration and the FCs, I can see a rationale for carrying at least 3 basic loadouts: a scout type craft optimised for long jumps and perhaps high-G planetary landings, a mining type craft for gathering materials for synthesis and perhaps resources for the carrier, a heavier combat craft for dealing with potential Thargoid/Other threats.
I am well aware of what they add, having participated heavily in both betas.
I also have no problem affording it, all the upgrades, and years of maintenance.

There's just no reason for me to bother with it.

I can move all my ships out to the black? Yes. But why?

I can use it as an exploration base? Yes. But why? Is the occasional payout from exploration data worth bothering with, since DSSA will have them all over the galaxy anyways? No it is not. Repairs out there? Again, see DSSA. Combat out there? Doesn't occur. Ever. Gathering materials? But I can already do that with the SRV.

And if I don't bring it exploring, then I have no use for any mining ship because I wont need to mine fuel.

Sure maybe exploration of Canon Research content. Maybe, but most likely wont be worth the constant wallet drain.

Good to see you here Sylveria! Hope life is kind to you.
Not playing at the moment either, but stile move Elite inside my imagination. It's kinda important for me for some reason. Right now I am disappointed about the missing VR feature of Odyssey at launch. I still hope it will be added later on.

S!
