Why do we want to be friends with the aliens?

In all seriousness, I think a race of aliens with their own "bubble" that we can interact with on a non-violent level (at least some of the time) has a lot more gameplay potential than just straight up violent conflict with the buggers. We already have ample opportunity for combat with pirates who demand all of our tasty cargo; I'd like to see tech/missions/trade/exploration opportunities arise from this.

Yep. Absolutely.

I mean, for you war mongers out there, what is really gained by just having a bug hunt? Just different targets with different weapons, and maybe the occasional GalNet headline with some information about what it's like to dissect one :p

And obviously there isn't just going to be peaceful relations with them, any more than we have peaceful relations with one another. You blood thirsty types will get all the pew pew pew your heart desires ;)

But if we have non-hostile relations as well, then there's a lot more opportunities available. Contact missions where we may not be able to understand the full language, for example.

(as much flak as No Man's Sky is getting, wouldn't it be neat if we slowly deciphered their language over time? Perhaps collectively as opposed to individually?)

Just saying, the push from the community should be for something more than war. Conflict will happen either way, so look for the route with more options tied to it.

Hell yes. It also taps into exploration and trading as well as the choice to out-and-out combat; generally access to a greater variety of game mechanics for all players.

I am looking on eBay for a translator so I can get busy as soon as we make first contact.

Word to you CMDR.

You think these Thargoids won't be like the shape shifting, brain sucking creators of all conflict since the Greeks civilized the world? The fact they announce themselves in riddles from derelict ships is a major concern. History has perhaps known them as The Annuakki, The Elohim and even the greys. You want to side with these creatures after Dulce Airforce base and Roswell?

😀 Are you off your meds again?

I am prepared for both scenarios. I have a few thousand tons of coffee on one hand and a few thousand multicannon rounds on the other.

I am offering them a choice. :D

Why?

Because we want to be the first kid on our block to get our face hugged oldskool:

Why peace with THEM?

There are probably many different THEM and all are different. We just fight the ones with the insatiable hunger for human flesh and ally with the ones like Eccentrica Gallumbits.

The ones we want to ally with are the ones with a totally incompatible biochemistry too ours, after all at least they won't want to serve us.

Because if America has shown us anything, war make things much worse for everyone.

Not for everyone I am afraid.
And that is an important reason why we have so many wars.
There is always a clique that profits from it, either financially or with political power, and the masses are easily manipulated to sacrifice their children for the profits of this elite.
In America for example in general the poor fight the wars for the rich and privileged.
It is a very good system.... if you are rich and privileged.

I completely agree with this.
That is why I hope that for example the Thargoids have factions too.
Some could be beligerent, others might be more peaceful.
I think that diversity like that will add to the depth of the ED universe.

... and I really would like to visit some alien space stations, which might be somewhat problematic if they shoot at me.
