Why Do You Own a Fleet Carrier?

When setting up, note that you don't need "shipyard". Your ships will get shipyard facilities anyway. The carrier service called "shipyard" is only for selling ships to other people.
Similar for Outfitting. You can always outfit/swap modules and store them for your own ships anyway. At a cool quarter of a billion to install, and 5 million per week to keep active, the Outfitting facility is pretty pointless unless you have friends who use your carrier often. And the packs of modules you can sell are pointless. It also takes up 1750 tons of space better used for cargo.

I also add 20% tariff to all services (I don't have shipyard or outfitting, either), so that every time I (or anyone landing) use the services, 20% goes directly into the carrier budget and thus the weekly upkeep.

There's so many carriers in just about any system where traffic would create a need for your services that you'll be lucky to see any revenue from it. There are also usually stations that commanders seem to prefer over using a carrier they don't know the status of.

I have zero tariffs, if a commander wants to use my services (I have all services) then it's there for them.

I pulled the trigger on one. I only put rearm and repair on it so far. I might go with refuel, but with all of the scoopable stars, it doesn't seem worth the cost. Maybe if I take it exploring, fuel could come in handy. Thanks for the info and advice
I only tend to use FC refuel for my mining cutter going back and forth in a Tritium ring. No space for scoops.

Similar here. I might sell Tritium out in Colonia, but that's it as far as profiting from my FC's existence goes. Tariffs would earn too infrequently, and they seem like a bit of an insult to a visiting Commander anyway. It's not like we need their money.

Any actual money making happens in the commodity market and bar.
I did repair my exploration ship at a carrier once, but that was out at Eta Carinae.
You can't even see them on galmap in 4.0

I have mine set to zero as well. It's parked next to a Compromised Nav Beacon for those who want to work on their combat rank. Less than 3 ls to the beacon and the star is scoopable. A quick jump out of the system and there are large ports to sell the bounties. It's also open to notorious cmdrs if they want to do their thing.

I own a Fleet Carrier because it significantly helps my online friends and gaming group on Elite Dangerous to log in or out in one place. Plus, it is very convenient to helping new players joining Elite Dangerous to move with others that are willing to help them e.g., joining their ship for bounty hunting, moving cargo, having them join team missions for end reward by being in system with you.... There are many reasons why I own one.
