Why do you play Elite?

Hello
Why do i play Elite?
Because i like to play it?
I can fight
I can mine
I can explore
I can trade
I can run missions
I can drive a buggy - on low or high gravity worlds

What do i miss?
A lot. The things missing are more ore less just 'nice to have' stuff
But i can play that game without it.

I was initially attracted to flying a space ship in a scale model of the Milky Way. The thought of the scale and it's implications was/is fascinating to me. Then I became introduced to the ships and the flight model and the deal was done. In 3 years I have put as many hours into Elite than I had in WoW over 6 years. I likely have a reputation on these forums as a 'White Knight', but I would assert that the support I show to FD is completely warranted. Elite: Dangerous is a fantastic game.

I'm with you. Buying, outfitting and tweaking ships is a tremendous draw for me.

AND the STARS... so many STARS!

Because it is the best 'fly a spaceship' game I am aware of. :D

As difficult as possible? I am not sure I understand what you mean? :S

It used to be, you could earn rank and a decent profit in the Hazrez's, and indeed, you still can.. If, you have enough firepower and shields to take down the new uber shields and uber hulls. They never used to boost off 4k and sit out there regen'ing their shields, then boost allt he way back for a straff run and boost off again. Or Just arrive in the rez zone and then wake out immediately. They never used to announce their presence by ramming you.

I don't need the rank nor the credits. So to be frank, If they boost off, I just engage another ship. I think it's sad tho, FDev in their wisdom, make everything as difficult as possible.

Why make the NPCs that are needed for credits and rank, leave the res zone? Why give them uber shields and hulls? It's meant to be a game.. not a job!

Lots of reason that were stated by others. Mainly ED is an escape for me. Being a Starship Commander doing whatever I want is a nice change from the fairly regimented role of construction superintendent. Second would be the ships and stations with overall visuals of the galaxy a very close third.

For me it was partially curiosity and also wanting to get back into a space type of game.

I played the original Elite back in 1991 or 1992, on a 386 computer when I was in my 20's. Wow has 35 years made a big difference! I had some online friends recommend the game to me too.

I also used to play Eve Online. Played it for about 7 years. There were many things about Eve that I loved.....but in the end too many things that I hated about it too.

Elite Dangerous seemed to be a compromise for me.

Mostly because of the very well done VR integration. It is currently the only VR title that keeps me playing for a long time. It brings together a lot of things that I like: Space (aww, the views), flight sim (it could be better here), good control over single/multiplayer so that I can play whatever I want whenever I want, some learning curve, a lot of things to try out to keep me playing again and again.

I play because I think it's awesome, it's the only game I play.

It captured by imagination back in '84 and again in the 90s with "Elite - Frontier".

Been playing since Beta, never really yet got bored with it. Many things have changed within the game, I just role with them.

The Elite Dangerous looks like the old games that my imagination coloured. Wish the Thargoids looked a little less flowery/organic but that's no biggy.

I like space, astronomy, spaceships and epic science fiction and Elite has a lot of it.

I play Elite for the adventure, to explore unknown worlds and discover alien and long forgotten places. The way, the dynamic environment and the missions are improving is very nice and adds a lot of fun to the game for me.
And now for the ultimate reason... i play exclusively in VR and Elite offers an audio-visual wall of awesomeness in VR. I can fly a spaceship, i can be in the spaceship, i can be the CMDR. That is, why i love to play Elite and will continue to do so.

And the closest we will ever get to putting you on a spaceship!

Git.... :p

But to expand on my previous post.

Apart from my love of the earlier games and this game, I've always had a fascination with Space and Space travel.

I've always wanted to experience the sensation of zeroG (without the aid of alcohol and not paying attention at the top of the stairs leaving a pub/club.)

The Moon landings are something I regret not being around to witness and hope and pray we eventually put a huge effort in to a manned Mars mission one day, I am lucky enough to own a Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch which I adore and appreciate the role it's played in history.

Oh and Agony..... Double Git :p :p

Space.

In all actuality, this game is a relaxing, downtime kind of game for me. I enjoy just flying around and exploring the galaxy in a spaceship. It's that dream of every scifi nerd and this is the closest thing we will get to it anytime soon.

Complicated.
I love the game, the freedom, the atmosphere, it's almost a way of life, there's nothing that's even remotely close to the amount of time and commitment I've devoted to this game.

However, I'm also a little disappointed at times, I can see all these little things that would make it even better but improvement always feels such a long time away. I wanted 2.4 to swamp me in story, mysteries to explore, new things to investigate, but again, I'm a bit disappointed, so far it feels like a mini game that takes place in a new USS, with all the extra things just being ways to interact with that USS (which so far is, fight it, scan it). I have my fingers crossed FD will turn it around and a month from now I'll be swimming in thargoid content that fits every part of the game, but, we'll see..... And apologies for turning that into a moan lol, overall, for me, it's still the most engrossing game I've ever played.

I can't say for sure, I just found it by accident in steam and it seemed as a very nice game that I needed to have fun at free times. Nowadays I play only for exploration and occasionally do PvP with some friends.

I enjoy space, the vistas, the sounds, outfitting my ships, tweaking and changing my ships.

I love to be a space truck drive, hauling stuff around.

I wish I had my own hangar or small outpost, I wish I could check my ship out from the inside, decorate it, shill out inside it. However as it is now I pretty much enjoy my space life.
