Why does dropped cargo come to a complete stop after being slammed by my 450kph ship?

In space.

Why do laser beams have a drop off range
Why do kinetic energy weapons have a drop off
Why is the scan range of a 34th century PPI in normal space only go out 8KM and only work to about 6KM at best while in supercruise it can scan a whole star system.
Why can missiles in space only fly 5KM?
Why can commodities with no demand be sold anyway at a decent price
Why can one be an admiral, a king and what ever the alliance weenie max rank is all be held at the same time (wouldn't that guy be in charge of all human space)
Why do sensor modules weigh so damned much
Why did the fundamentals of supply and demand go bye bye while the essentials of capitalism survived

Why...

And don't tell me it's all about gameplay. If I wanted to play a WWI flight sim (don't know who said that in another thread but - thanks - great observation) I'd still be playing RED BARON or KNIGHTS OF THE SKY.

All the current game play does is give the yung'uns who still have fast reflexes a big advantage over those that don't (think the ongoing PVP fecal tornado). And does it with spaceships instead of airplanes (which in the final analysis might just be the whole point - please - that can't be the whole point)

It's the 34th CENTURY for GAWD's sake. Computer - execute offensive maneuver Alpha Delta 401 - now! Computer - plot a course to Somewhere 133DX. Dock at station Yur Johnson is Tiny and scan local missions issued by local controlling faction with assassination in the subject. Computer - on landing repair all including integrity, refuel all and restock. OH and computer - I'll be in my stateroom enjoying myself with a good holo vid. Don't bother me unless it is absolutely necessary - and just a reminder - you know what "absolutely necessary means, right?". Yeah BOSS! I know, says the computer.

IT IS the 34th Century.

Human intervention only when necessary, make the important decisions, decide where to go and even how to get there. Decide what to do when you do get there. Build a BGS that is the reason for a really good story line, a story line that the combined actions of players can really impact and the list goes on and on and on.

And yeah - that'd change gameplay quite a bit. And as much as I like ED (been playin' it pretty reglar for the past 4+ years) I think it would change it for the better or - the devs could just change the stupid stuff to something that makes a bit more sense.

OH! Wait - uhhhh - that's already been done in the X universe and especially in the the X Foundations universe.

Never mind. Forgot where I was I suppose.

It's a gameplay necessity. Everything would be so much more frustrating if things would just drift away eternally. Like blow up an asteroid. All the bits and pieces would spread out all over the place and you could maybe collect one, two fragments before the rest disappears past the radar edge. Best example are thruster disabled ships in combat zones that actually do drift away. Chasing them down is a pain. And then you have to get back into the CZ again.
That is so annoying.

I like to imagine that its just my pilot making the noises with his mouth and it sounds better in his head.

In reality he is just sitting in his cockpit making very loud and random "WHOOOOOOSSSSHHH"- ing noises with the occasional "BANG"'s and "ZZZZZZZZZAP"s. Meanwhile his crew sits there awkwardly and wonders if he is okay.
This is why we seem to be alone on the bridge usually.

….
  1. Colimation like everything else not being perfect a reflection of the inverse square rule.
  2. Aether drag.
  3. Because in super cruise the rules are different for example ships go faster than light.
  4. Range safety systems.
  5. People are still stupid, some think if someone is selling something it must be worth buying.
  6. Honorary titles after all we don't get to run fleets or get to rule anybody.
  7. Neutronium plated lens mounts.
  8. Politics.
Note not all answers are serious.

Heh,

I was just going to answer #1.

I've never understood why people think lasers should have infinite range.

Also, on a (vaguely) related note, it used to bug me the way people lost their minds over the lasers in Fallout 4 having "recoil".
It seems fairly plausible that there might be moving parts inside a laser weapon (some kind of induction-coil, perhaps) which are used to generate the power required for a laser beam and generate "recoil" as they move.

Same thing applies to ED there too.

Regarding the OP. It might be the gravitational pull of the ship. Either that or the aether, as aRJay stated. Thought we had ruled that one out with Einstein, but maybe we have to reconsider... :)

Yea yea, masslock is my personal narrative, but it's still a bit over-powered for my liking. As for Einstien, the only thing he did was gum up our "progression". What do you think all the fuss is about this Dark Matter lately? They are only poking around the Aether. Only now they pinned a smart sounding name to it and are patting each other on the back for "discovering it".

I bet we could be flying real spaceships by now if weren't for 'ol Albert. Doing away with Tesla didn't help much either. Don't believe everything they fed you in the camp, er I mean school.

:sneaky:🍿

Of course dark matter. Or what do you think the vacuum of space is filled with? If there was nothing, it all would simply collapse in on itself. DUH!

I think relativity goes for dark matter as well :) The classic concept of the aether would mean that the dark matter would be moving around in the aether, not that it necessarily is the aether itself, but it's a fun idea, I admit.

Regarding science, it's pretty damn close to the best understanding of reality we have, but it's an ongoing proces. Look at it this way: The older scientific knowledge is, the more trustworthy it normally is. Pi won't change, and even though it's hard to prove without axioms, 1+1=2. On the edges of science, where the research is being done, it's a little more shaky and up for debate. Especially the debate can be shaky.

If the dropped mat & cargo rate were increased but the game also increased the possibility that not all of it could be grabbed would that be okay?

Then it becomes an element that rewards skill & encourages the player to be more situationally aware.
