Why does it seem like everyone hates the Federation?

I'm completely new to the Elite universe as I never played any of the older games, nor do I know any of the lore at all really. So I'm assuming there is probably a reason but I'm just wondering what that is.

The only thing I've seen is a very small description of the Empire and the Feds from the manual you can down load. To me I'd think most would side with the Federation as they kind of seem like a futuristic America or Great Britain really. Similar to the Federation in Star Trek maybe?

Anyway as I said I know nothing about the lore so maybe I'm way off.

So tell me, why does everyone on here always seem to hate the Feds? Honestly I'm going to go the Fed route anyway just b/c everyone seems to hate them and therefore I'll have more targets :)

I do not hate them more than the empire or the alliance meddling with my affairs.

But the ship design of the empire seems to fit most players taste,
also slaves.

A better Sci-Fi comparison would be Eathgov in Bablyon 5, The Federation is founded in the ideals of democracy with good ideals and intentions, but there are shadowy forces at work behind the scenes.

Corruption is rampant fuelled by powerful corporate and military interests. The military is a law unto itself generally only serving its best interests, especial in the outer worlds.

i think people hate them because they are regime in disguise, they are oppressing people through their insane amount of rules and regulations and that directly effects us, fines for cmdr's for "illegal" cargo, less profitable trading routes, etc because of these things. Empire directly opposed the federation and was founded because of it with the duval family who colonized the achenar system.

Also empire has cooler looking and better ship in the clipper, also cool sounding ranks.

Its not that i hate specifically the feds, i just hate anything that disaproves my profiteering business.

The way Federal space is run and governed is too similar to the way many western countries are ran today. At least in my case...

All you Imperial fascists with your human cloning. The "evil" Feds even tolerate the Sublime Order of van Maanen's Star, you wouldn't see diversity and culture like that in Imperial space - only the bootheel of the Imperial slave driver, er senator.

also empire bans slaves as well but not imperial slaves, this is because imperial slavery is like a job. They have contracts and are treated fairly well, also it is not for unlimited time. People willingly sell themselves into slavery to pay off debts an are freed when they are done.

Even the devs have said that the federation is an extreme place, there are VERY rich people and VERY poor people whereas one of the senators described the empire as nobody is on the streets dying, everyone has a job.

pretty much, corporations run the federations. Its like american corporate oligarchy influence gone into space, that is not what you want ever.
