Newcomer / Intro Why does the Federation suddenly dislike me?

So, I did a ton of missions for the Federation and eventually they became friendly, turned green, and offered me a trip to Sol. Great! Then suddenly they're unfriendly, the stations are all being rude to me, and although I've been allowed to enter Sol I'm not allowed to accept the Federation advancement mission when I get there.

And I don't know how this happened.

I did engage in a bit of bounty hunting in some Federation systems, but I only shot Wanted targets. But two (possibly three) times, Federation ships managed to fly in front of my guns and turn red instantly (as they do). I quickly disengaged and went and paid my fines, but could that be why I became unfriendly?

I already find it extremely frustrating that a friendly or neutral ship can decide to fly between me and my target before I can possibly react, get hit, and become an enemy. If this has also undone all my reputation grinding as well then I probably can't be bothered to continue.

There's no way a ship should instantly become an enemy with one shot if they're engaging the person you are fighting.

Unfortunately it is very very easy to lose rep with a faction compared to gaining it.
According to the devs this is by design but personally I think they need to balance it a bit better than currently.
They did say it might be something they tweak.
Also killing wanted federation associated targets might be decreasing your rep. Again this might be something they change in the near future.
Personally I try to check faction before killing a target.

Were the targets showing as wanted in Federation systems or did you ID them as wanted using a warrant scanner? If the latter you may have taken out a Federation ally who was wanted in another system and that would annoy the Feds and make you their enemy because you basically killed their friend who may have become wanted by killing Alliance/Empire etc - wanted status isn't galaxy wide. Always check their faction/who they are allied to.

They showed as "Wanted" on the normal scanner, which I believe means they are wanted in the current system.

Meh, I really can't be bothered to grind all that rep back just to see whether the Feds dish out more interesting missions. That was pretty much the last thing I was going to try to see if the game had any more content. I think I'm done, at least for now. Might come back and try some PvP at some point.
