Why has the Community Manager virtually abandoned the forums?

The forums isn't the only community related to this game. Spending more of his time on YouTube promoting the game to a wider audience, than the regulars on these Forums, is also community management. I think, that's the right way to do it.

Nope. At one time ED's developers were very active on the forums, but for whatever reason it seems that has been discouraged.
I don't know about "that has been discouraged" but I wouldn't be surprised if "they have been discouraged". It seems to be a somewhat thankless task these days.

I do. Which is how I know the developers post far less than they used to.

Fair enough.

When FDev originally introduced the role of a Community Manager we got lots of interaction on the forums. I believe the idea was to allow the developers to get on with developing the game, rather than wasting time on the forums answering questions:

However these days he seems to spend most of his time (preparing for?) making YouTube streams (which I personally have no interest in), rather than posting on the forums answering serious questions about the game :-( . e.g. In the last month he made 35 posts, but 14+ of them were to do with his YouTube videos, so that's less than 5 posts per week about non-video stuff.

So now it is almost impossible to get an answer out of FDev about important issues.

Am I the only one who wishes he'd spend a bit less time doing (IMHO boring) YouTube streams, and instead answer some serious questions on the forums?

Is there any chance FDev could ask him to allocate a bit more time to the forums? It seems like his role has changed from "Community Manager" to "YouTube PR Manager".

For Clarity - The Community Manager role is governed by the people that pays his or her wages. That would be FD, we the customers pay FD.

If you feel the Community Manager Role is not spending enough time on the forum then it's FD that is held to account. Not the person in the role, because if that person is under instructions not to discuss development items (New Features or Bugs) then they won't/can't post here.

I think we do need a role that responds to questions on the forum, Micheal Brooks did get his feet wet a few times. But on the whole if I was FD I would stop things festering and answer the questions, regardless if that answer is Don't know, Soon™ or Never.

So, just to clarify.. Important to you?
As I stated, this is NOT about the beige planet issue. (I'm not even THAT bothered about it personally, although it is a disappointment. It doesn't even affect me at all, since a different bug prevents me from playing since 2.3 was released.)

I'm merely using it as a clear example of a problem I've noticed about lack of communication from FDev.

Frontier have stated that that problem is being worked on.
FWIW, they stated that about 5-6 months ago, and then silence since. An update would be nice.

I'm reading this as you don't like the YT content FD does so they should stop?
I never said that, so please don't put words into my mouth. I *specifically* asked that he doesn't spend 99% of his time on YouTube, and instead spends a small amount actually answering valid questions on the forums. I *specifically* stated that there used to be much more communication from FDev on the forums, now there is almost none.

Please stop reading between the lines, because you are imagining things.

You're entitled to your opinion, but singling out Ed isn't really fair is it?
He's the Community Manager. I'm not aware of anyone else paid to communicate with the community.

Any direct personal attacks on any other forum members and or FD enployees wil be dealt with very quickly.
I'm not attacking anyone. I'm asking for FDev to communicate a bit more on the forums. The Community Manager is the only person I'm aware of who's job it is to do that, so it seems valid to ask why that's hardly happening anymore.

No cherry picked questions? Excellent idea absolutely yes to this.

Cherry picked questions...meh whatever

Don't get your hopes up, there is nothing you can do about non cherry picked questions that get answered with 'not soon', 'maybe', 'that's something we'll look into in the future' and 'no ETAs or guarantees' ;)

And that's exactly what I asked: Can FDev ask him to spend more time on the forums?

Just to reply in a non mod role..

There is more than one CM for FD and they are pretty active in my opinion.

"pretty active" is like saying "Ted Bundy was just having some problems" :)

Of course, I understand things like Time Zones and Schedules, but it does look pretty amusing from where I'm sitting.

Thats why I stopped watching the livestreams...because thats literally all ye got apart from what they wanted to talk about...that gets very boring after a very short space of time, but if thats what floats everyone elses boat, then fair enough. Doesnt float mine though...or the ops fer that matter...or anyone else complaining about the lack of effective communication and at last count, that was more than just the odd few. Ergo the question...why?

To be fair..

1) You specifically linked to the Beige planet thread indicating that it was something you wanted an answer for.
So now it is almost impossible to get an answer out of FDev about important issues.
It has been a while since an update on the issue but as I said it is being worked on and when they have some news I'm sure they will share it.

2) Honestly I'm not attempting to put words into your mouth I just said that it was how I read your comments.

As you said you find his streams boring. they're not for everyone but they are part of the FD marketing strategy to connect with the playerbase new and old.

3)
He's the Community Manager. I'm not aware of anyone else paid to communicate with the community.

I did list the other members of the Frontier Community team who are all paid employees.

Bo Marit
Brett C
Dale Emasiri
Edward Lewis
Paige Harvey
Zac Antonaci

As to my statement re any direct attacks on others, It was a general statement and not directed at anyone I assure you.

So, this is a roundabout way to complain again about the "Beige planets" syndrome......

I'd personally love an update on the beige planet issue, it's been over five months since the last one by Michael. Has Frontier started working on a fix? Is it planned for 2.4, or for some later update? Or is it still unstarted and being shelved for a later time?

The OP has a point, Frontier used to communicate a lot more in many more ways than they do today. Sandro has been communicative on C&P lately, but that's pretty much the extent of it. Frontier people do make posts still, just not informative posts, their communications are much more social and playful but not informative with regards to the development of the game. And that's what is wrong with their communcations today.
