The night sky, I've been gazing at it since I was tall enough to hold up my Grandfathers binoculars and stare at the moon....

This welcomed me when I went to let the cats out just after midnight. Just sometimes, I feel humbled to live on this little island. Sorry the quality isn't that good, camera phone.

I too own a pair of my Grandfathers binoculars. But looking up at the night sky only reveals a smoggy mess punctuated by the occasional aircraft.

The stars have no memory mole...they dont care about what we have done or will do...they were there before the first human being and will be there after we are extinct. Our entire species and history are nothing but than a very brief blink in their lifetimes.

I love space and sci fi...grew up on a diet of space 1999, blakes 7, doctor who, battlestar galactica (the first one not the more recent remake) Buck rogers...as cheezy as the 80s could get really but we didnt know any better back then...it was food fer a voraciously hungry imagination that had previosly been starved on cheap and cheesy cardboard props and very dodgy special effects of model ships on strings.

I used to look up at the stars and wonder if I would ever get to see them in my lifetime...obviously not unless my name was Richard Branson and had more money than god...so games like elite are the backup plan.

Even the name ¨verminstar¨ was borrowed from an old 2000ad storyline...although it was created fer a different game and I just kept it when I migrated to elite as there is a meaning to the name...a sci fi meaning of course ^

we don't get the Aurora out where I work but with the nearest significant light pollution a couple of hundred kilometres away the night sky is spectacular

I found Elite after having a long time hobby of standing out in the freezing cold, in the middle of a field in the dark looking at the stars through a scope. Being about to "visit" these places that you can see from your back porch is wonderful for me.

Its one of the best mind-opening hobbies to get into. To the point where you stop thinking of it as a hobby....

Thanks for the rep guys...Where I live on one of the smaller Orkney islands, local Viking lore names the Aurora Borealis as 'The merry dancers'...very poetic. Usually the Aurora appear more commonly during Autumn...but we do see a lot of it up here compared to mainland UK. Lack of light pollution helps of course...since we have very little.

You have a phone able to expose an aurora and a full starry sky in the same shot under extremely low light conditions, and you apologize for the quality? My DSLR would have a hard time at that!

These are awesome. To be able to see an aurora from the comfort of one's home, is a privilege for the few.

Some great capture and processing there! You know there's an entire section of this forum dedicated to astronomy discussions just below this one, right?
I suppose there are quite a bunch of amateur astronomers around this community, we should use it more often for this kind of awesome material.

Usually the Aurora appear more commonly during Autumn...but we do see a lot of it up here compared to mainland UK. Lack of light pollution helps of course...since we have very little.

I've read that auroras are usually more frequent and strong around equinoxes for reasons yet to be completely understood...as for me, living almost exactly at 45° latitude, I'll have to wait for the next Carrington Event to be able to see one...if I don't find the time and money to pay a visit to more favorable latitudes, that is.

Yup, I've always been fascinated by space. I used to be much more into amateur astronomy, too, but I've kinda fallen out of that in the past couple of years. There's nothing quite looking through a telescope and seeing a planet or galaxy for yourself. Even the best pictures don't match the thrill of getting photons in your own eyes direct from 'out there'.

There is nothing more calm and amazing than looking at perfectly black night sky with out light pollution - I live in a damn city and every chance I get I will just for a few minutes stop and gaze at the stars. Very nice photos OP, well done.

I was born and raised in a major city with an urban sprawl, so the night sky always looked like a very dark brown. When I was in undergrad about eight years ago, my partner transferred to another university and I moved in with her on a part-time basis — it was in the mountains with the local college town being the only nearby settlement. As a result, at night, especially in winter, I could see the Milky Way and watch satellites fly overhead, which was positively magical for someone like me.

Now that I'm back in an urban sprawl, all I want is to move to some place where I can see the night sky so clearly again. And buy a telescope. Hopefully some day. Until then... space games and planetarium software.
