Why is Legacy the default install? Pushing players away.

My son installed the game after hearing me talk about it. He started playing and was enjoying himself. About 12 hrs into his character he asked if I can join him. It was then that we realised he was playing on the 'Legacy' version. It seems the Steam installer defaulted to the Legacy version of the game and therefore his 12 hrs of progress will be lost if he changes over to the 'live' version.

I assumed he'd done something wrong and told him to switch over to the live version. I've even bought him the Odyssey DLC so he can join me on all my missions. He still hasn't started playing again tho. He's understandably ed off with this new player experience.

A family friend has also recently started playing ED. I asked to join him today only to find out he has also made the same 'mistake'. I wonder how many other new players this has happened to and pushed them away from playing again. Why would anyone buy the DLC's if they will lose all their progress from playing on the default install?

By not fixing this issue you are killing your own game.

I was going to play tonight anyway but the final straw was discovering that the 'Vehicle Extras' list in game is sorted with my purchased items at the bottom REGARDLESS of the sorting settings. Ridiculous. That might seem like a small issue but like I said, final straw.

You're worried about 12 hours of game progress?
In a game where at least a thousand hours play time is common?
And where death penalties can be quite brutal... for example as in losing weeks of exploration gameplay due to misjudging that planet's G force, crashing the ship and losing all exploration data, visited stars etc.?

Also hopefully you're aware Odyssey is rated as PEGI16

I also noticed that the game feels almost empty of players in open now. Hard to get a random crew on board also. And the first thing that came in to my mind was the new legacy and live modes that basically splitted the community...

Definitely
But, why playing on Legacy if you are on PC?

Not even the consolers are being held back now, since they reopened the transfers (even with no gaming PC, Geforce now is a really decent option at a fraction of the cost of a new gaming PC)

Do you not understand the purpose of this entire post? The default install via Steam is Legacy mode. When the launcher opens after installing via Steam, Legacy mode is pre-selected. If you hit play you end up in Legacy mode.

This exactly. If Lorthpin had spent the time to read my original post he'd see where the problem is.

Ofc i do. And i still wonder why they didnt switched clients when Update 14 (and the split) hit the servers and waited till U15, 6 months later...

Anyway, the launcher mentions this split and it has a link to it
Also, it's also in the name of the game: Legacy Elite Dangerous

There are hints...

When someone fresh to a game loads it up for the first time, the default settings are typically correct. Why are you being facetious with regards to new players? Don't you want more people playing this game that we waited decades for? This attitude is what makes it difficult for new players to be invited to the game.
