Why is there no more beta testing before update?

My guess is that they didn't think this update would affect things like engineering, as an example. Good thing to remember is that this game is not on subscription. I can surely wait a week or two for things to get fixed. I am not losing any real money in the process.

  1. Because they don't fix the bugs reported any way so theres no point having people report bugs... Wasted time and money when they won't be fixed
  2. They ONLY did it for PC, when Xbox and PS4 specific bug will not be reported by them any way.. more wasted money as the console bugs that are not cross platform can't be fixed by PC only users reporting them..
  3. False reports of not game fault issues but ISP and data restriction issues (waste of money checking what is a user side issue from living in EU with crap ADSL)
  4. Time VS return accountant says cost to much...
Same reason there are no Aplha and beta public testing, Only player demos of tripple AAA titles... these are so late and so near release day, NO changes can be done any way and server load estimate is all there for as there online demos not real alpha builds...

Thats why you do testing, so you dont have to think or guess. At least thats what game dev companies with any respect at all for their player base does, and i think you are correct, they didnt think or test, the results certainly seem to confirm that.

They probably tested the things they expected to be affected. Anyways... the good thing to remember is that we are not subscribed to Elite with real money. Taking a break from the game doesn't cost real money. I expect things to be in order in one or two weeks for those who are affected by the current bugs.

It's a big Elite Dangerous update. Things will break, it's always happened before. Just go play something else for a couple weeks until the problems get sorted out.

Whats a subscription have anything to do with an update being tested or not, not many games with subs anymore. Been saying this game is treated like a early access game with dlc from the beginning.

You must have not read what I wrote... I will repeat myself.

"My guess is that they didn't think this update would affect things like engineering, as an example."

Also this...

"They probably tested things they expected to be affected."

My wording regarding sub-based games (WOW etc), is that, at least, we are not paying them (FD) during downtime caused by bugs.

And, Frontier is losing sales while people wait for the bug fixes.

OP: there's been no beta testing, none, since premium beta ended. How many years ago was that now? Sure, there was a "beta preview" or whatever FDev called it where one could pay money for early access to an upcoming release. But it wasn't beta testing; it was "learn the new meta-build before others" testing.

There was beta testing during the first year after release. You used to have to pay to beta test, then beta testing became free, and finally they dropped it altogether. I can understand the first change, the second not so much.

Pay to beta-test? When did that happen? I've been in several betas and never had to pay for them. And I am not a LEP owner.

It cost either $5 or $10 to beta test an update for a couple weeks before it came out, and then for a short while you had to be an LEP owner to be able to do it. Then they made it free, and a couple of releases later they stopped beta testing. This was, as I wrote, in the very early days after release.

I beta-tested a lot of Horizons stuff as well as some of the Beyond stuff without paying anything. I bought this game in 2015.

EDIT: Beyond had almost a 4 week open beta for Chapter 4. Did you miss that one?

Ah, I was taking a break from the game at the time (gotta keep burnout at bay...)

Edit: jeez I need to get used to this new forum engine.
