Why is this Game called Elite Dangerous?

It's like calling a game about the Army something like General : Captain. The name makes absolutely no sense.

Or maybe inventing Federation ranks called, 'Post Commander', or 'Post Captain'; silly titles demonstrating no research or understanding of meaningful military ranks - even in a made up scenario.

Elite: Disappointing suits me.

Don't you know?? It's called Elite Dangerous because space is supposed to be dangerous!! Obviously! Absolutely! No question! :)

My god, the name of the game is based on it´s history.
Instead of naming it Elite III or something they thought "Mh, how could we name it?".
Elite: Elite.
Silly, right?
Elite: harmless
Silly, right?
Elite: deadly.
Uhm, nope
Elite: dangerous
Hey that sounds ok !

End of story. Besides of other possibilities like Elite: 3300 or whatever, go figure.

Unless you're a Captain, generally speaking. Not sure if that would work but at least any wars you got into couldn't be accused of being undemocratic. Right, I'm off to the pub now.

I'm pretty sure there's a High Court judge in the UK called Judge Judge. And I was at Navy college with someone called Lieutenant Sergeant.

Because they liked the name? Because they said so? Why is it even important?

The while point of a name is, there is no point to it. After a while it becomes what it's supposed to be, just a label with no meaning. Even IF it is meant to be dangerous in the most literal form possible, danger is a subjective human construct. My danger is not always yours and the other way around. But I'm sure you all new that.

"Dad?"
"Yes son."
"What is your name?"
""
"Why is your name dad?"
"Because my parents liked the name."
"Dad?"
"Yes."
"Why did your parents like that name?"
etc etc...

I'm slightly worried by this book, I'm half expecting someone to serve me a Creme Brulee with broken glass in it...

Why did you name yourself 'Cosmo'?:p
The name always reminds me of an English comedian's character: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js3xIg2pw8w.
I'm showing my age here.:)
...
Honestly, I don't know.
Speculation alert.
The word 'dangerous' conveys danger? For players who have played the previous games it would play on their knowledge of the pilot ranking in the game; they already know the universe is dangerous. To those ignorant of the Elite universe it conveys danger and excitement, may be terror.
Ask an advertising rep for more theory.
...
How about:
Elite Grief - 3 syllables
Elite RNG - 5
Elite Grind - 3
Elite AI - 4
Elite FA Off - 5
Elite Void - 3
Elite Noob - 3
Just joking:)
...
Now Cosmo, stop being an Elite Navel gazer.:D
You know Cosmo is too a Marvel character? Cosmo The Spacedog, look it up, really funny

I'm glad you told me that. You made me laugh, sir Sir. Sundays can be boring for me but you cheered me up. Cheers. Totally off topic but enjoying a fun thread; I'm getting a band together. I played Punk and Ska before but I'm giving Metal a go and loving every minute (or second depending on how fast you can play). Just wanted to share that because I have been too negative on these forums before letting real life get in the way. It turned out a lot of my Anarcho Punk mates want to give Metal a try. It just feels good and sometimes you can stick politics where the sun doesn't shine. We even discussed squeezing our middle aged bodies into leopard print jeans to go all the way. I know I'm well off topic here but I just want to share this. I didn't talk properly to my mates and it turns out that they were getting bored of the Punk Grind. Plus I'm really bad Jazz player. If there is such a thing. That's my rant. You guys cheered me up.

My only problem with the name is that an adjective tends to be associated with the noun/s that follow, so you get odd sounding titles like "Elite Dangerous Safe Docking Techniques", which at first read sound like an internal contradiction.

Otherwise, who cares?

I think Elite Dangerous sounds more badass than Elite Deadly. The latter sounds a bit "cheap" to me, I don't know. Like a B-movie title.

All the other names are taken. Except for Elite: Herpes Duplex and Elite: Plazenta. So they picked Dangerous.

That name at least does not make the milk spoil.
