Why is your favourite animal your favourite animal?

I'm really curious about the people who are desperate to get a certain animal in the game, be it a porcupine, grey wolf, musk ox or walrus (you know who you are!) For me it was raccoons and I was so SO excited when the Twilight pack came out. I'd love to know where these attachments come from because I am sure that some of us, like me, have really deep personal reasons for them.

So, not just in the game, but IRL, what's your favourite animal and why? I'll go first. Trigger warning: grief and loss.

I'm English but my dad was American. He grew up in California and his family did lots of mountain hiking. One time out on a hike they found an abandoned baby raccoon, and he and his sister rescued it. They bought it up in their house and named him Rocky Raccoon. When Rocky got older, they found a really good rehabilitation programme that gently introduced him to a wild raccoon family and eventually released him back into the wild with them. When I was born, my dad gave me a 'Fluppet' raccoon called Rocky - do you know those 80's puppet soft toys? And when I was little, he would put on puppet shows with all my soft toy animals and Rocky was always the star of the show. Many times when I was growing up, Dad took me to America, and we went mountain hiking in the Sierras and he told me stories about the real Rocky and other adventures. He would play me 'Rocky Racoon' and other Beatles songs on the guitar to sing me to sleep. Rocky came with me everywhere, I told him all my thoughts and feelings, and would smuggle him to school up my sleeve. I gave him 'haircuts' and combined with all the snuggling, he had a particularly well-worn 'loved' look that was entirely, uniquely Rocky.

When I was 17, my dad suddenly died, and my world shattered. Strangely, just before he passed away, I also lost Rocky on a trip to the states to see family. It was like a bad omen. Somehow the two losses seemed intertwined and my childhood was well and truly over. A lesson I learned was that when you lose someone important like that, you never get over it, it lives with you, and you learn to live with it. You learn that loss is a part of life, and one that we all have to live with eventually - we are truly unusually lucky if it's not too often, or too young. "At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can", as Frida Kahlo tells us. Even when it happened, I knew that I was so, so grateful to have had my dad for the time I'd been able to have him, rather than have any other dad for my whole life.

Earlier this year, I was experiencing another big loss, and I was thinking about Dad, and Rocky. And for some reason, I googled 80's raccoon fluppets, and omg, THERE was Rocky on ebay! Just one, with the same scruffy haircut and looking just as love-worn as my Rocky had! These toys were discontinued long ago and this was the only one on the whole freaking internet that is exactly the same as the one I'd had. Just a click away. A part of me, the magical-thinking child part, just knew that somehow, Rocky had travelled the world, gained some independence and was now able to return to me. I bought him, there was no bidding involved, and he arrived through the post a week later...as easy as that. My eyes could hardly process. It was like a tiny fragment of my childhood back. A little hello from my dad.

So. I know they're not everyone's favourite, and for many of you, it's just a backyard pest. But for me, it was really important to have raccoons in the game. I've made little woodland enclaves and playgrounds for them and they're my favourite animal to watch on camera mode, shuffling about and washing their food. Obviously I have named many of my favourites 'Rocky'! They're also a creature I can relate to - nocturnal, playful, a bit naughty - and they love their snacks!

So, if you feel comfortable sharing, I'd love to know your stories. Why are porcupines divine? What is the beauty of the walrus? What box is ticked by the grey fox or ox? What creature is the main feature and why?

🖤 Rocky Returned 🖤

That was a lovely story. Thank you for sharing!

Mine aren't as meaningful, but I will contribute. I will break down my big 3:
I was in preschool when I first took a trip to the Smithsonian Zoo with my dad. I was hoping to see giraffes, but they actually don't have them. I saw so many animals that it was hard to keep track of them all, but the main one I remembered was the Golden Lion Tamarin. The zoo was breeding them, and they had a bunch (~12-15?) in an enclosure. There were a few juveniles, and they were all chasing each other around the enclosure. It was so beautiful to watch. They were talking about conservation, and we learned that they had so many because they were preparing to release some into the wild. That was the first time I learned about conservation efforts, and one of the memories that inspired my love of zoos and conservation.

The American Black Bear is a favorite for color morphs and being something like a local mascot. When people go hiking, they are an animal that you might see, but they often keep to themselves. There are many funny videos of them breaking into backyards and playing with human toys: pools, picnic tables, and swing sets. They are kind of cute and curious but rarely aggressive. I also think their color phases are really cool, but I don't see the colorful ones on the east coast. I love hiking, and I have a lot of nice memories seeing my favorite bear in zoos and in the wild.

I completed an art project involving a serval, and they are my favorite little cat. I always loved watching the videos of exotic cats zooming around a house. While I am not equipped to or particularly interested in keeping one for myself, the Savannah Cat breed seemed like the closest I could get. They look really cool and typically have the personality traits of my favorite childhood pet cat. They are so expensive and a bit challenging to keep, so I would probably only get one if I won the lottery or something. I really like seeing the servals in zoos. In their mannerisms, they always seem somewhere in between a cheetah and a housecat.

The Przewalski's Wild Horse is a favorite because I like horses and conservation. They are also adorably chunky. They were my most recent big want that was added to the game.

If i'm completly honest all of my favorite animals are already ingame (red panda, okapi, elephants, tigers, jaguar, otters, etc).

Out of the ones left dolphins (specially orcas) are the ones i actually don't want in the game. I love them irl. Found them cute and fascinating.

Then the harpy eagle or andean condor i don't really think will ever come to the game. Both of them are majestic and powerful birds. Both with strong parenting isntincts and strong mating bonds plus the cóndor is one of our national birds and love seeing them soaring in the skies whenever i have the chance.

Out of the ones that could still come i have hope for the secretary bird, coati, mara and my favorite antelopes (greater kudu and blackbuck).

Definitely not a deep backstory to why I want the musk ox. Basically of all the animals I've seen in a zoo, musk ox have been the most fascinating to me. I first saw them in the Highland wildlife park say a decade ago in a rather bad winter where amongst all the animals generally hiding away ( yes that includes polar bears, snow leopards and all these cold weather animals funnily enough) The ox were completely covered in snow just minding their own business eating the odd pile of hay. Shame they aren't around any more, white lipped deer just don't have the charm the musk ox did.

I’ve only recently started to want the Barbary Sheep in the game but in real life at my local zoo I always love watching them. They have a huge Rocky Mountain in the middle of their pen an there’s always one at the very top and a couple trying to get up on the cliff sides, they’re so funny to watch.

Very nice story and interesting thread. Mine aren't the same level of depth, though.

Since I was little, I've always loved animals, and,.like all boys growing up, I wanted the weirdest ñ,.coolest animals. Oh, but not like your average Joe who likes the great white shark or a lion. No, when I say coolest, mine was the red kangaroo.

I had watched the cartoon sequel to Kangaroo Jack, Kangaroo Jack: G'Day USA, and I loved kangaroos and thought they were the best. Over time, I got distracted with other things and kinda stopped reading so much about animals.

Eventually, my favorite animal became the white tiger, partly because I would read so much Calvin and Hobbes. I thought that white tigers were amazing.

It was only until a few years ago I found out about the gray fox as well as the Thylacine, and now, both are in a battle of who my all time favorite animal is. I love both because they're so funky compared to their closest relatives, and both are beautiful animals

Do extinct critters still count as favorite animals?
If so then definetly hatzegopteryx.
I mean its a giraffe sized flying reptile ruling with an iron fist (well beak really) as apex predator over an island of dwarf species of dinosaur. Whats not to love? This is really the concept of island fauna on an extreme.
Imo there really isnt anything more wonderous or terrifying than that :D

Lovely story!
Here my three "most wanted" and favourite animals
My IRL and 1# favourite animals is okapi, it's in the game already. Okapi has been my favourite animal since I was young, that time when I was in school and we were going to Bristol Zoo for trip. Before going to there, teacher gave us map of Bristol Zoo and asked what our favourite animal is, I didn't have one at that time, I looked at map and pointed at Okapi and the teacher said, "Oh yeah that's a brown animal with white stripes" teacher doesn't know about okapi in that time 😂. Then we went to Bristol Zoo and saw it, fascinated by it.

Okapi always have been my favourite animal, it's such an amazing and beautiful endangered animal that only can be found in Democratic Republic Congo. I always look forward to see okapi at zoos if they house this animal. I also went to Wild Place project (named Bristol Zoo Project) for keeper experience with okapi, it was unforgettable experience, fed and touched okapi and saw baby okapi on that day. It feels very lucky to feed and touch my favourite animal.

My most wanted animal for this game was Amur Leopard which are in the game already. Amur Leopard is honestly my favourite wild cat, it's so majestic and stunning. Sadly, this leopard is critically endangered with very few numbers of Amur Leopard left in the wild. This is how my love for zoos and conservation have grown after seeing all conservation efforts and endangered animals in zoos. I was so glad to see Amur Leopard finally get added in the game, this is animal I always use in my zoos.

Finally, now you guys probably know what my current most wanted animal is, the Wolverine, obviously. Wolverine is such a cool animal, how Wolverine looks and moves fascinated me, it's probably one of the most coolest animal ever I seen. I just love how Wolverine is basically fearless, able to go up against animals that are many times bigger than Wolverine. I saw this animal at Wild Place (named Bristol Zoo Project again), I was completely fascinated by it, saw it climbed up the tree and galloping around spacious woodland exhibit. This is why I want Wolverine so badly, waiting patiently until it finally get added in the game 🙃

Elephants

One of my earliest memories was when my parents took me to ZooTampa, then known as Lowry Park Zoo. I remember being absolutely MESMERIZED by the African elephants. They were just so large and unique. I just developed an early love for them somehow. To this day, my most wild, unrealistic fantasy involves having an elephant as a best friend, but I know that it’s impossible. Maybe if we find a way to clone the extinct Sicilian Dwarf Elephant, it might be possible.

My favorite marine animal is manatees. They also have them at ZooTampa, so that might’ve had something to do with it. Even if they didn’t house them, how could they not be anyone’s favorite? They’re so wholesome, adorable and squishy! And when I found out that they share a common evolutionary ancestor with elephants, that made me love them more!

My favorite bird is either the harpy eagle or the cassowary. When it comes to the harpy eagle, when my mother and I first saw one at ZooMiami, she was so taken aback by how huge it was, so that memory has a special place in my heart. As for the cassowary, I remember playing a video game called “Zoo Hospital” on the Nintendo Wii. When I unlocked the cassowary, I didn’t recognize it. It made me think, “What the heck is that thing?” After I learned more about them, I decided to make it one of my life’s goals to find a zoo that houses one so that I can see it in real life. When I went to the Jacksonville Zoo many years ago, I finally saw one, and my mission was complete.

Bat-eared Fox.
My favorite animal is dogs! Man's best friend! Wild Canids however are not man's best friend. Yet, they look so much like man's best friend... They blend exotic with familiar.
Bat-eared and Crab-eating Foxes in particular you could see dog-like features yet God made them as a completely different animal. We bought a wildlife cards at a yard sale once that had so many animals. Because of the dog-like features I really was into the exotic foxes and that was my first exposure to many types of fox including the bat-eared. The Bat-eared (unlike crab-eating) turned out to be at the local zoo! So, I have seen bat-eared irl and have always admired them as long as I have known of them!
Another thing I'd like to add is that they eat insects partly so they aren't quite as vicious as typical foxes...

I’ve only recently started to want the Barbary Sheep in the game but in real life at my local zoo I always love watching them. They have a huge Rocky Mountain in the middle of their pen a there’s always one at the very top and a couple trying to get up on the cliff sides, they’re so funny to watch.
Roger Williams? Sounds an awful lot like it.

They recently took it down to build an education center tho. I’ll miss them. :(

Funnily enough I don’t have a one favorite animal, although I have a few top picks.

Coyotes. They’re just so cool. I remember once when I was maybe about seven I had just got home from school and when I got inside and looked out my front window I saw two coyotes walking up the street. The ones near me are so big and look like wolves, and it was just so awe-inspiring that we have them in our neighborhood, but we never see them. I still have a picture I took with my little iPad that day. I have ran into coyotes on a couple occasions and every time it!s just so incredible.

Pronghorns. I went on a vacation to the Grand Canyon and a couple other spots around it such as Zion and Bryce Canyon this past April and really wanted to see a pronghorn in the wild. They were something I had only ever seen in zoos and wanted to see one in their natural habitat. I joked with my family about seeing one on occasion and then BOOM! There was a heard of them eating maybe about fifty feet from the highway! We saw them another time during that trip and they’re just such cool animals.

Stellar’s Jay. It might sound weird to all you westerners due to how annoying they can be, but since I was little and looking through bird books I always loved the Stellar’s Jay. Its colors were just stunning compared to our Blue Jays. I drew pictures of them and always wanted to see one. When I went to Bryce Canyon I saw one perched in a tree. It was so magical seeing the bird I always dreamed of seeing in the real world

EDIT: added the pictures!

I'm loving reading your stories. I grew up animal obsessed, drawing them and reading about them, and my favourite place was the zoo or aquarium. It's nice to hear how many of you were the same. I feel like I've found my tribe here haha. There's no better wonder than the wonder of nature. Whenever I find out about a new animal (now that I'm grown it's usually sea creatures because I know most of the terrestrial ones) I just get this feeling of awe and like, how can that even be real?! I like to try to imagine being in their bodies and what the world would feel like if I had four legs / heavy tonnes of fur / antennae / tentacles or whatever. Animals are amazing 😊 Recently I learned that owls' eyes are tube shaped and basically binoculars. Mind. Blown.

I would’ve guessed the Cougar! 😅

And you guessed right! I should of clarified that while the musk ox isnt actually my number 1 favourite animal it is still one of the most fascinating animals ive seen personally. Since the cougar is ingame i switched to the musk ox as my most wanted game animal. If the north america pack never happened, i wouldn't shut up about the cougar.
