Modes Why no passive mode?

First of all he starts off with "we don't give out numbers", so that's that. The 49% come from the ED Mega Survey (see first post), where 12601 commanders participated, so it's a very good estimate. The result of they survey was that 49% of commanders play in open and 51% in solo+pg (it doesn't distinct between those two). If you count solo and PG separately then yes, open would be the most popular. How are the 49% wrong again?

What measures were in place to ensure that only owners / players of the game could vote in that poll?

.... I'd be more inclined to place my trust in Frontier's own statements - when they know for sure (through their in-game analytics) how many players play in each game mode.

It's not really surprising, given that there are private groups that can have their own in-house rules and police their own members accordingly. Why would the developer invest the time and effort into a solution that already exists?

It's more of an "help yourself" solution. Just looking at the Mobius membercount (somewhere between 20.000-40.000) there clearly is a demand for this type of gameplay. And you're right, I don't really expect FD to do anything about this.

Isn't a CG just that though? It's literally called a -community- goal where commanders work together towards a common goal. If people go to the CG's for the pvp I'd assume they'd want to meet other commanders with the same goal? Unless shooting defenceless traders is your thing I guess. Even then I'm sure there's quite a few traders who enjoy the risk. Literally those who already do CGs in open plus I don't think they'd combat log. Win-Win?

Negative.
In Elite CGs can fail, and if that is your goal you need to have all around PvP
to impact the CG.

Frontier don't need to give out numbers, "majority by a significant margin" is quite clear - well over 50% play open mode.

As for the ED mega survey, it's worthless. It wasn't run by Frontier, so you have no idea if people were cheating / voting more than once.
And as Reddit accounts are free, anyone could vote as many times as they want to create email accounts & Reddit accounts.

So I trust Frontier way more than I trust some random person on Reddit.

So let's derail the topic, why not. You can question the ED survey just like you can question any other scientific survey or study if you like. Just like I can question FD's 2,8% statement or their nonspecific "majority by a significant margin" statement.

Once again, if you count solo, PG and open separately then -already- would open be the most popular mode. The ED survey and FD's statement are -not- conflicting because "majority by a significant margin" is not clear at all. Majority relative to the entire playerbase, or relative to the other game modes? How does FD decide which mode you prefer? Did they count the hours? Did they count how often you logged in to one mode? I don't know, and you don't know. The ED survey is non-ambiguous there and the best estimate we will ever get.

And just so I get this right, you're basically saying that a bunch of people or a hacker decided to maniupulate the survey to show that open has less players than it really has? Really? Not to mention that the survey had a whole lot of other questions, why would this specific one with great effort be manipulated and for what purpose?

There is zero need for a "passive mode" because

1) There are already mode options that let you achieve essentially the same thing.

2) "lol can't hurt me" gameplay mechanics are a terrible idea in a space sim.
