Why no Standard Beta players allowed to play Horizons Beta?

This narks me off to be honest. I paid for Standard Beta, I paid for Horizons and now here I am unable to try it out until it gets released because its only a select few who can play it. Did the bumph actually state this anywhere in the Horizons purchase screen? I was under the impression getting Standard Beta that I would be able to test other dlc packs in Beta? And I can actually play the 1.5 Ships Beta but not Horizons Beta ? Why is that? Is this going to be the case with all major expansions? I will have to make sure I dont buy any more early like I did here and wait until they get released in future if that is the case.

I mean I already got disappointed once I realised that 'Holidays 2015' doesnt mean 'Summer Holidays 2015' but 'Christmas 2015' (no I am not American and neither are Frontier an American company which is why this confused me!)

One of these days I might actually be able to play ED. Oh well back to Fallout 4 and Scourge of War: Waterloo!

The bit that baffles me the most is, when did it become normal to expect people to pay to beta test at all?

Well you arent paying to beta test you are paying to play the new feature earlier arent you. But obviously the Standard Beta people lose out for the large expansions for some unknown reason.

Well Nats, you do pay FD to test Horizons for them.... OP there's a link on the launcher I think. I wanted to try it free before I committed to BUYING it, but quickly realised it's not meant to be and I can't either.

I'm patient enough to wait it out, been following it on you-tube 'n' stuff. Will make up my mind after Christmas, and most likely grab it with a Vive when that eventually comes out to.

Paying to play early imo would mean you get it 1-2 weeks before anyone else on the live server.

No matter what rose tinted glasses you put on, they are making people pay to beta test. (early backers/life time pass are different)

Nope, not making anyone pay to play anything, you pay and play at your own choice.

I'm glad to give a tenner for an early look at Horizons, it all goes to making this game better.

Well had this been any other game I wouldn't have paid for the privilege of testing their game for them. ED though I considered a bit differently based on how I enjoyed the earlier games but tbh I don't think so far ED has lived up to my expectations. I was half wondering what Horizons was going to be like thats all. But I probably wont start playing the game again for another few months yet anyway, and even then I see little on the 'horizon' to get excited about. Its just not shaping up to be as much fun as the previous games for me really. Possibly in another year when the proper planets come out - by then it might be worth a decent amount of my time! I really want to see a whole new 'experience' when I play it next. Maybe I am a bit daft sinking money into this project when its not producing the goods I want to see. Horizons will tell whether I pay anything more into it I think.

That's the trend now a days in gaming though.

Blame Valve/Steam for creating the paid early access culture. Years and years ago you could play alphas/betas for free but look at how many games on Steam are early access but you still pay 50% or more for the game, and in some cases you don't know if the game will flop or the developers will stop backing the game. CubeWorlds and example of that it's been stuck in alpha for 3 years and a lot of people have hounded it's creator via Reddit and Twitter.

Horizons beta is only available for Horizons Beta, Premium Beta and Lifetime Expansion Pass owners.

So when you say you paid standard beta doesnt that mean you have "Horizons Beta"?

No I bought Standard Beta of the original game a few years ago. I obviously dont rank as having paid enough to get into the Horizons Beta. But Im not sinking any more money into this project until they produce the stuff I want to play. I very much doubt whether I will get my moneys worth out of the Horizons price as it is. There is maybe 5-10 hours of play in there for me at the most. It not that different to what they have already. If they had included all of the planets and other base game depth stuff that people have been asking for it might have been a bit more exciting. But I really am not that interested is driving around on moons (got Kerbal for that) and the crafting etc doesnt interest me.

The beta is a testing ground yes. But you get to play with the toys first, and everything is 90% off, so you can do whatever you want, easily. Since it's not tied to your main account, nothing matters that you do, which can be a nice change of pace too.

Worth it, for me personally.

If I understand it correctly:

Standard Beta = all 1.xx content.
Horizons Beta = all 2.xx content.
Premium Beta = All content.
Lifetime = All content.

It has been clear since the pre-orders started that you had to buy Horizons Beta to play Horizons in beta (if you didn't already have Premium Beta/LEP access).

People who felt that playing the beta is worth the extra money, paid that money.

OP, you don't feel that the Horizons beta is valuable enough to pay for the early access. It is as simple as that.

And to comments about paying FDev to test...c'mon, really? Some people are doing real testing, trying out scenarios and reporting their findings (they like doing that)....most of us are just playing and having fun and letting the logging tools collect our crash information. I paid to play the game before others and before the main release, and I'm getting my money's worth out of it because I'd be super jealous if I couldn't play it right now.

Thats correct. I didnt realize OP was actually referring to the original 1.0 content beta I was assuming they were talking about 2.0 content.

OP - then of course you wouldnt have access to Horizons from standard beta for 1.0 not sure why thats not surprising

Agreed. On top of being able to find issues, it is also a chance of trying out the new toys with little consequence. You can crash your Anaconda on a high gravity planet, it doesn't matter much credit wise and you get to learn how to adapt without wasting your credits. Many people are taking the chance of changing the loadout of their exploration ship according to the new parameters we have to deal with now. So I'd say that it is worth my money.

Well, you don't have to test. You are paying to play first and not have to sit on the sidelines pouting.

I'm not actively testing. More than anything, I'm figuring out how I want to play once it goes live. What I encounter along the way I contribute that to the bug threads already created by more industrious players. Though really, I'm not even doing that very well.

If I were beta testing, I'd have test cases, access to a bug tracking application, and would be doing root cause analysis. I'm not doing that, I certainly didn't pay to do that.
