Why Not Play Another Game?

Since burning out on ED. (Damn you Corvette... Damn you), I've been trying to either find a replacement, or rekindle the fun in ED.

So far, failed at both. Lol

NMS was ok, but Christ, you say ED is grind... Even the combat sucks in NMS, so it's literally just grind in order to grind some more. Lol

Annnd that's it. No other decent first person space sims out yet.
Plenty of science fiction games, but no actual good space sims.

What I'd really love is I-War 3. Or a Reboot. Has potential to tick all the boxes really. Complex but fun space flight, good combat, good travel system with potential for multiplayer choke points (at Lagrange Points) and even a potential for a full sized galaxy like EDs.

Have you tried Starpoint Gemeni Warlords? The reviews seem to be pretty good.

Hello Major Tom, Earth here. I did *not* abuse anyone, nor have I ever in this forum. Did you read my post at all before launching your tirade? Here's a clue for you, the word 'abuse' was used by the guy I was replying to. I also did not say that FD listen only to constructive criticism. Why don't you do people the courtesy of reading before replying.

Oh did I upset you by not agreeing with you? I never mentioned the word 'abuse', I just highlighted how you are very fond of labelling anyone who dares to disagree with you :D

And you certainly implied that FD will only act on CONTRUCTIVE CRITICISM (upper case cos that's how you like it, sounds all important like doesn't it), and I asked why hasn't all the CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM been listen to and acted upon?

Have a good day now :D

Corvette's are boring get a chieftain.

Why antagonize over it though?

Look, I am shiniest white knight these forums have seen and even then I am not playing ED on regular basis. And that's not because I don't like the game - heck, I love it, it is still awesome for me. But I saviour each moment I can fully engage with it. Just grinding doesn't cut for me. I want to feel immersed. And if I am anxious about something in real life, playing ED isn't always best way how to solve that.

Enjoy games. Find something that works for you. If you feel ED is grown boring, tedious, or it never clicked for you - don't try to push yourself. Why would you?

Totally agree. I always want to play Elite, often go into it and think 'what do I do'? I plan a long session, and end up playing for an hour...but I still want to play it even when I'm frustrated and log out (usually to Oxygen Not Included which is my go to 'Elite's frustrating me' game).

Absolutely no other space game 'does it for me' like Elite does.

It's a weird feeling. Desperately wanting to play it all the time, and at the same time, begrudgingly loading it up.

If you want a more invested experience, unfortunately, you can't expect FD to provide it, but there are options which you may not have considered. Some of the best experiences I've had have been on Expeditions: Distant Worlds, Distant Stars, and the Enigma Expedition. In other words, experiences that the players have created for themselves.

If exploration doesn't appeal to you, consider joining the Fuel Rats. You can get genuine emotional satisfaction from helping others. Plus, they try to make it exciting and challenging, by making it a race to see who can be the first to help.

The most emotionally rewarding experience that FD actually provided surprised me. I really felt that I was helping others, when I rescued numerous NPCs from the burning stations, when the Thargoids first attacked. If anyone from FD is reading this, we need more content like that.

I support this. The only content that mattered to me for the 2+ years I played has been player-driven.

I didn't imply anything of the sort. And here's another clue, I don't get upset by fanbois misrepresenting my posts. But I will call you out for it.

Another good question is: Why isn't there a better game than Elite in this genre?
I have 0 experience in development/coding, but I assume these games are not the easiest to develop. The bigger you try and make it, the more varied your playerbase gets, and eventually everyone starts asking for different features. And in a game that strives for realism, there's no end to feature requests.

I imagine this is also the reason no big publisher is taking the risk to develop a super in-depth space sim. And the only decent attempts needed Kickstarter campaigns to get them started.

Imagine living in a world where ideas written on a forum is all you need to create a feature.

Very little publisher interest in niche games, and they are also hard to do well. The original Elite games were never really surpassed, they were the benchmark you judged the rest by and nothing else really came close in terms of scale. There were campaign based space games that were excellent, but that's scratching a different itch. ED will become (or already is) the new benchmark.

Freespace2 which is still the go to game for space sim dogfighting campaigns was used in loops to show off hardware in PC/gaming shops and received almost universal critical acclaim. Nobody bought it though.

Yeah, if you want a huge beautiful galaxy and you like to shoot stuff in engaging battles, this game is the way to go.

- Eve is impressive, but it's a spreadsheet. Best PvP-MMO in the universe because it has actual wars with losses and gains, but you're not a pilot. You are a weaponized project engineer with an uranium-tipped pen and big grudges.
- X3 is brilliant, because it is one of the few games that makes the grind truly rewarding. And it is the only game where capital ships are CAPITAL ships where your broadsides feel like they can level empires. But it is old, its galaxy is unimpressive, it's UI is a mess and you never feel immersed in the more advanced ships, you simply observe them.
- Star Citizen is, well, ambitious but a far cry from where it needs to be.

And most others are generally very limited, very focused on one thing or very old. I'll shout out to Avorion for being a great game that strikes a good balance between the things it tries to do, but if you think Elite sometimes seems, well, "overly procedural"... then you ain't seen nothing yet. Still, for a small indie game it is well worth a try.

I'd say Elite is still the undisputed king of the space genre where you want to feel like the pilot. Especially its VR implementation is simply top notch.

Yes, the annoying thing about ED is that it has amazing potential that's being squandered by the dev team. It's the ONLY space game out there right now (Evochron legacy, Rogue System....) so how it shapes up and ends up might still be the only game in town.

I think ED's excellent, the dev's deserve nothing but praise.

I am playing another game. Take on Mars has held my interest for a while now. With friends no less. But then again, I have been accused of having weird tastes when it comes to gaming. I also like flight sims so perhaps that explains a lot. [big grin]

Take On Mars was better in beta, IMO, because you could choose from several pre-made scenarios and just basically live on Mars without limits. That’s all gone now, and it killed the game for me.

That, and no VR implementation planned.
