Powerplay Why PowerPlay? A newbie asks

Had the game since launch, made my first pledge today. Wot's uh' the Deal?

Been leaching off Li Yong Rui (me base is at Ray's) for the discount since purchase and I LOVE political shenanigans (as a member of a British political party, believe me most of the ire is about the other factions within your party - see Life of Brian).

Bar the above what do you recommend?

Any of the modules worth it?

I'm an explorer/trader - is the increase in cash worth it?

Cheers very much in advance.

If I may add a newbie question: is the powerplay state shared between all platforms? E.g. if a system on PC is controlled by Hudson, that's also the case for PS4 and Xbox?

Powerplay is a personal choice, how much you get out of it will largely depend on what you're after.
-After modules? You can cycle through the powers gaining access to each one per month, then leave for a new one once you've bought a few.
-After bonuses for income? Choose the power that boosts your primary source of income. Rank 2 can be maintained with minimal effort, about an hour per week. If that nets you a profit, go for it.
-After RP elements to add to your game? Then we can't really tell you which power to choose, it's up to you. Check the wiki for info on what each power is about and how they engage in PP.

In short:
Empire = totalitarianist autocrats who engage in slavery. Currently possesses a disproportionate percentage of the playerbase.
Federation = authoritative oligarchy under the guise of freedom. Currently the galactic punching-bag.
Alliance = capitalist hegemony. Currently "winning", and has been/will be for a while.
Independents = idiosyncratic. Some are pirates, some are hippies, they do their own thing and generally keep to themselves (with the exception of Grom, who elected to become an imperial puppet).

As for the modules, most are pretty meh IMO. The only one that really makes any meaningful impact on a ship is Prismatic Shields, maybe Pack Hounds also, the rest are pretty underwhelming, existing as minor variations over the baseline modules.

Explorer power AFAIK is LYR, if you play more than 6 hours a week, the 20% bonus will obviously net you a greater income.

Edit: I imagine the galaxy is linked across platforms, I can't image a world in which FDev would maintain a unique universe for each platform, but that's just pure speculation.

Easy question first:

When PFB arrive, PvP between pledged CMDRs is going to be exempt from the PFBs when in your home systems or in enemy systems. PP is intended to encourage direct PvP interaction, even though it took us two years for FDev to tell us explicitly. So keep that in mind.

Many traders swear by Aisling's Prismatic Shields, others by the PackHounds, etc, etc. Engineers makes them all slightly less special, but capable of being even more special, so it's your call, again.

I don't know anyone who uses the 100% increase to explorer cash ins, because exploration takes more than a week, and it takes a week to get Rating 5. So again, it's up to you.

Why would a new player participate? For the community and shared objectives. Participating for rewards is a bit like running a marathon because you want to stare at a firm behind for four hours - it'll work, but there are far better ways of achieving that goal.

By finding a community to join, you'll end up with people of all tiers to help you out, typically end up with groups that have players of all time zones and a multitude of languages, and you'll likely find that the community around PowerPlay is about more than just merits.

I'd recommend looking at the various subreddits for the powers, dropping by their discord servers and just hanging out for a while to see which players fit best with yourself. If you have inclinations towards a power, superpower or independents, that certainly cuts down on the amount of time needed for that, but in any case, these are the powers' subreddits, sorted by the power's name:

Aisling Duval (empire): https://www.reddit.com/r/AislingDuval/
Arissa Lavigny-Duval (empire): https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteLavigny/
Archon Delaine (independent): https://www.reddit.com/r/KumoCrew/
Denton Patreus (empire): https://www.reddit.comr/ElitePatreus/
Edmund Mahon (alliance): https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteMahon/
Felicia Winters (federation): https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteWinters/
Li Yong-Rui (independent): https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteSirius/
Pranav Antal (independent): https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteAntal/
Yuri Grom (independent): https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteGrom
Zachary Hudson (federation): https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteHudson
Zemina Torval (empite): https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteTorval

It was mentioned the Empire engages in slavery. Not entirely correct, the Aisling power bans slavery and narcotics within its borders, and promotes semi-socialist factions while still encouraging capitalism with high end goods.
Powerplay in general also adds another avenue and depth of gameplay where you can choose to participate independently or with player groups on power goals.

Not to mention that the entire Empire bans slavery, excepting dictatorships who seem as bad as anarchy governments. It's Imperial slavery that is legal in the majority of the Empire. Systems controlled or exploited by Aisling Duval, Pranav Antal, and Felicia Winters (control only) are exceptions. If you do a search, you'll find dozens of arguments about the difference between slavery and Imperial slavery, so I won't go into it here.

If you're interested in proper slavery, none of this faux namby pamby imperial slavery nonsense, join the Kumo Crew ;)

(Slavery is slavery whatever they say)

What other power lets you eat the stupid too?

I am also playing Elite since two years. At the beginning being in the bubble was a chore, and I was all in for exploration. Then got burnt out, and decided to give bubble-dwelling a try - and got hooked in the quest to gain access to all engineers, then somehow ended up in Hanggardi as home system, with occasional excursions to the Pleiades.

I am probably an average combateer with (very) limited FA-off git gudness.

As I was sitting in front of the Hanggardi mission screen, I thought that I might relocate a more interesting system and pledge.
Also, I guess the powerplay madness will get a twist with the bugs invading us.

So I'm considering getting into this.
The question I have: how much PvP is involved when playing in open? I'd hate to become a moving target for PvP demigods. :)

A bit old but might be of intereste to some.

Why pledge to Pranav Antal? (self.EliteAntal)
submitted 1 year ago * by cdca [+55]

Simguru Pranav Antal is the leader of the Utopia movement, an organisation of scientists, engineers and spiritualists dedicated to improving society through technology and radical social engineering. His ideals of cooperation and innovation are reflected in our community.
We're dedicated to supporting our community members and ensuring everyone can help in a way they find fun, whether they're Harmless or Elite. It doesn't hurt that our pledges get bonuses to smuggling, government manipulation and bounty hunting!

ACTIVE AND FRIENDLY COMMUNITY
Our subreddit is one of the most active and organised Powerplay communities, but small enough that you can make your voice heard and really make a difference. We give clear objectives each week, but get them from the combined input of all our members.
Even if you're not sure you want to take the plunge, do drop in and say hi and see how we do things!

GUIDES AND SUPPORT
The powerplay rules can be a little arcane, which is why we maintain an index of guides to walk you through every aspect of Powerplay in a concise, clear way. We even run a couple of training schemes to help new pilots learn the ropes.
Need to find a good mining, bounty hunting or outfitting site in our space? We'll point you in the right direction!

COMBAT-DRIVEN EXPANSION AND COMMUNITY BATTLES
Our power expands through special conflict zones rather than by shipping commodities. The forces of corruption and oppression can always find sellswords willing to defend their unjust rule, and it's up to us to pull them from their thrones!
When an important expansion comes up, the whole community converges there to form wings and participate in mass battles. Not only is this a lot more fun than shipping commodities, it's a great way to meet new Utopian friends and earn merits quickly.

SMUGGLER'S PARADISE
Utopia abhors the tools of social oppression like slavery and narcotics, but there are always those willing to pay through the nose to unscrupulous smugglers.
Our exploited systems not only give a 10% bonus on all goods sold on the black market, but high value goods like Progenitor Cells and Imperial Slaves are illegal in all our systems (even Anarchy ones with no cops to scan you!) so you can easily find a lucrative smuggling route.

THE ENFORCER CANNON
A triumph of Utopian engineering and creativity, our unique module, the Enforcer Cannon, is a small, fixed multicannon variant that deals huge amounts of damage with a seemingly bottomless ammo supply. Check it out in action here.

BOUNTY HUNTING AND COMBAT BOND BONUSES
Pranav Antal brings peace and order to a historically lawless sector, and pays his top lawgivers handsomely to keep his disciples safe.
Both bounty hunting and combat bond payments are doubled for Rank 5 players.

SOCIAL ENGINEERING
The ethos of Utopia dictates radical social change in order to promote equality and justice for all. More than any other power, we manipulate and change governments in our systems to lighten our workload.
Our in-game bonuses means that changing the influence of factions is much easier for us. If you like the idea of social engineering on a galactic scale, we're the power for you!

SUPPORTS EVERY PLAYSTYLE - MORE THAN JUST A GRIND
We engage in such a wide range of activities that we can find a use for any playstyle. Everyone from mercenaries to miners can all contribute, not just by shipping commodities!
We find useful roles for novice players, so they don't feel like their contribution is just a drop in the ocean but really see the difference they're making.

ROLEPLAYING AND LORE
We also like roleplaying and really appreciate those who write short fiction pieces and Galnet articles about the power. Each weekly update comes with a snippet of microfiction and we produce more short stories than any other power. Utopia is a new addition to the Elite universe, and much of its lore has been written by players!

Join us in creating a brighter future for humanity in Elite's most vibrant community!

OP , in case you haven't seen it, there was a "powerplay" trailer. Some of what's shown doesn't show up in pp like particular missions, but an ok trailer for the hype then.

When I first started Elite: Dangerous- I looked around at all there was to do. Well, at heart I'm a trader... So once I started PP I noticed Torval's trading bonus- so that sucked me in...

That led to looking at how the BGS worked....

And that keeps me going. Yes, if you look at it, hauling fairly low-profit (well, negative profit if you factor in quota fast-tracking) is a waste of time...but throw in all the BGS, and I'm hooked..

But I'm a weirdo who likes hauling stuff around...
