Why Ranking is so Boring

Who Does FD think they are fooling when it comes to ranking up, why is it so boring, why is it so hard , why is it not fun
i spent the last 3 days grinding and only 30% more rank [knocked out]-_- , i feel bad for people playing this game with depression, let alone the people with jobs.

i know people are going to say "if you dont like grinding then dont grind" but i say to you "then do what exactly?" how else do i get what i want. i have literally have all ships with out a rank requirement A fitted, i have nothing to work for other than those rank ships , not that i haven't tried to rank up before.

i hate missions, i hate them with every fiber in my body, doing the same thing over and over with rank progression comparable to watching the tectonic plates drift. in what world is this fun? why is this my only option. why is it so hard to get a ship thats only marginally better than the anaconda?

The Ranking system is too hard than it needs to be, im not saying people should go from sidewinder to Cutter in a matter of days, but some one that is experienced as i am should be able to get it no problemo,

i remember back way when i was grinding for the anaconda, it was really fun, in fact the most fun i ever had in the game, why cant power grinding be like that, you get tired of doing missions go over and bounty hunt, dont want to do that go mining, you know? this thing from America we call FREEDOM!, i know the game was made in England but i know you guys have freedom by now right? -JK

Is there an easier way, have i been doing it wrong this whole time?is there a different way than doing the same gash dang missions OVER AND OVER? How much money would it take in donation missions to get to the Cutter rank?will the mods mute this thread? FIND OUT IN THE COMMENT THREAD BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

My guess is you went straight credit grind/credit exploit which is why you can afford to "A" out all the ships, but don't have the rank to get locked ships.

I did a bit of everything and it seemed my rank got there right around the time the credits did. No grinding necessary.

op likes to use the word grind/grinding a lot ,I've played this for a couple of years and never grinded once , I think people today just can't comprehend a game with NO end game or goals to go for if you don't want too . the thing your doing wrong is forgetting to have fun ,just get in your fave ship and go places ,meet people , see new things. it's about having fun ,not about gotta get it all ( I think that's another game lol )

A rewarding "main quest" line for each superpower would be neat stuff. That or let me get to Rear Admiral in a couple hours again, that was boring but at least it was over quickly.

Where to start...

You are free to choose your goals in Elite - or simply play for the fun of it without particular long term goals. If you choose to focus on one goal and pursue it in a singular manner then it will grind - but this style of play is still your choice.

Perhaps FD made a mistake showing progress bars for rankings? They become metrics usurped into the illusion of showing your progress in the game, before which new ranks arrived almost unexpectedly, achievements that happened but could not be systematically pursued. Perhaps we were more free to enjoy the game back then. But people like simple scores to chase, as if this was pinball...

Play the game for fun, its a leisure activity. Don't chase ranks, it gets in the way - they will come in time. If you really cannot see past this - then perhaps a game with a more apparent scoring system would be more suitable?

A nice game of pinball maybe?

What the hell did you do to get enough credits to A rate every ship that doesn't require a major faction rank?

Did you just straight up credit grind?

If so, how are you not burned out?

I love when it is slow. This game is definately about rush. Just turn on chillout music on your way to 200 000 ls starport away :) Small step in this game make me happy. I even try not to play communities goal because i think reward is usually to high.

There is no other way to say this but suck it up dude! I do feel your pain though, the only way to get through something you find tedious is to break it up. Do 1 or 2 hours and walk away. Turn it on again later when refreshed and smash out another couple of hours. Set smaller goals and forget the big target until you are closer. Works for me - good luck!

Your guess would be wrong. Exploration, trade loops, bounty hunting, CGs (that I've taken part of) and CZs all reward credits, typically without exploits, but contribute nothing to rank in themselves. Missions are needed for rank. Credits can come from anything and everything so long as you're not too concerned with pace.

On a side note, even with doing missions, it seems high paying ones will get you credits far faster than rank. Personally I did try out 17 Draconis for the CZs and got a bit over a bill pulling missions from fed factions while only getting from Chief Petty Officer to Lt. Commander in that time. Without stacking that would mean the same rank but even more credits earned as I'd have that many more bounty vouchers turned in for the same number of missions.

Ranking solo will make you go blind and develop hairy palms. Ranking in open will get you arrested. Private groups... the best way to enjoy ranking.

This game is all about choices. For example, I decide not to participate in Power Play. So I will never get the nice prismatic shields or pack-hound missiles. My decision, I live with the consequences - without crying bloody murder on the forum.

So you don't like doing missions, which means that your ranking will be much slower. Your decision, so maybe no Cutter for you. I do not see an issue with the game here. By the way, 30% gain in rank in three days is fast (depending on what rank you are). Once you hit Duke or Rear Admiral, 30% in 3 months is not too shabby.

Ranking system is hard, but why should it be easy? Cutter or Corvette are the "ultimate goal" for many, when it comes to ships. It should take a while to get them. I did not grind for rank or money and it took me about 1000 hours in game to get to the Cutter (money, rank). However, I had fun along the way....

Donation missions were exploited for fast ranking schemes and nerfed as a consequence. No longer a viable option.

My guess is because FDev haven't got to it yet to flesh it out properly. The current system screams placeholder.... At least I truly hope thats what it is. Right now there is no real challenge or experience aside from "find the latest mission stacking place".

I am hopeful for a partially scripted mini-storyline here that players can engage in. First 2 ranks are as it is now then you get a transmission: "Greetings CMDR, we have some work we need doing but this has to be strictly off the books so we can't use any of our usual people, the *Empire/Federation* have gotten wise to our probes. Your first task should you accept is to go to X system and gather intel on the *Empire/Federation* military system. Note: if you get scanned you'll turn wanted and fail the mission unless you destroy all witnesses and hyperspace out."

Maybe have successful rank missions actually harm the enemy influence levels in certain systems, make the faction rank mission trees follow the boarder of the Fed/Empire, have it sync with the BGS.

There's plenty of stuff there that they could do, have the highest levels be something like Rout a capital ship or win a conflict for our faction or something that feels like you are doing a meaningful change.

There is tremendous variety in the mission system.
Delivery, source and supply, assassination, smuggling, PAX, data transfer, courier, infiltration, sabotage, salvage, mining, mercenary, disaster aid, political machinations, goodwill, exploration, ..., the list goes on.

It may be a bit cliched, but if you really do find "missions" boring, then maybe a different game (at least for a while) might be an idea?

I wish we could get past the whole notion of something being made to take excessive amounts of time but no skill being hard.

While not commenting on the idea of how much time it should take, 1000 hours is just plain ridiculous. For some people I know that's in the neighborhood of 2 to 3 years of combined gaming time playing a single game.

The only way you're going to make any noticeable progress is by spamming courier missions at sothis or wu guinagi.

That's really the core issue that needs fixing. Other mission types and activities don't contribute enough (or at all), nor are they fun or challenging.

If you call them by their named types sure, though near half are basically thematic variations on take a thing to a place. Then you have the shoot things subset on top of that. That leaves the rest with some manner of variation, but with some sparse mission boards out there your selection can and will vary.

If I may quote from the shipyard description of the Cutter -

"... it is possible but extremely rare for a private individual to own one of these vessels ..." (or words to that effect).

If anything I think it's easier now than FD originally intended.

You named a whole lot of mission types yes but of all those you listed maybe 4 -5 of those are different mission templates , the rest are rehashed creations of the same A to B deliver and done mould .. i would hardly call it "tremendous variety" .. sure snowflakes have "tremendous variety" but when viewed for what it really is , its just frozen water molecules.
