Why should I play in Open Play when I´m not interested in PVP?

Hello fellow Commanders!

Since about 2 month i play Elite.

I started it with my friend an we played most of the time in group mode.
Sometimes when my friend wasn´t online, I played Solo.
On Tuesday i thought i should try open play and I did so. I expected some interaction with other players or maybe some events.
Most of the time I only saw players in the stations. At this point i have to say that I´m a trader and fly a Type-9.

I´ve got no interaction with players. Its like I were invisible. Even when I rammed other players and wrote "Sorry, Cmdr" in the chat i got no response.

The only player interaction I´ve got were the pirates who interdicted me, just want my loot or kill me instand without saying anything.

I saw many player, who play in open play, don´t like that the solo/group members have no malus when they play in solo/group.
But when you are just a target for the pvp guys and nobody wants to talk to you, why should I play in Open Play.

Of course, the future of this game is designed by the gamers who play it,
so what I see is a future where PVP guys play in open play shooting themselves without talking and PVE guys who play in Solo/Group and never will meet each other.

Of course I could go away from populated systems, but why should I when i can play with my friends in group and have peace.

I dont want to cry about the situation, but i just think about the future of this awesome game.

I would loveto talk to other players. I also would love to make deals with pirates, so they let me live,
but if the community issn´t interested in social interaction, i see a very dark future for this game.

Would be nice to read your oppinions.

Best whishes and fly safe!

I play exclusively in open for the constant threat of death. NPC pirates don't scare me like players do. For me it makes the game much more immersive. Not everyone feels this way though so there is always solo. 95% of the time I play in open however it is like you describe, it is like I am invisible, and I'm usually fine with that. I do think being a pirate for a career choice needs some love from the devs so its not like that as often.

Just like with any MMO, you either actively serch for players willing to do something together, or the only type of interaction you have is random "pvp" which usually is just you getting killed without a single chance, because attacker usually will choose targets he can easily defeat. Of cource sometimes it can be fun too, surprising attacker by unusual behavior/equipment, etc...

Getting away from player-populated areas in open seem pointless for mee too, if i want to avoid another players i will better use solo mode.

I just look at it like walking into a bar and chatting up the first girl i see and she ignores me i move onto the next one. OK i find most peeps in open play very friendly

Direct chat the commanders, it changes the text color and makes it more likely they will notice it (Normally chat is mainly NPCs going "I can't believe this is happening!" while dieing to station lasers. I've had a lot of good interactions with other players, including pirates. Heck last night at the Azaleach CG I got into a very interesting discussion with several Imperial commanders about the current state of affairs in the Empire and the upcoming power play mechanics.

Sometimes yes, people will ignore you (specially near rare trade stations as they tend to be in grind mode and just lose focus of everything bu the trade run), but on the whole I normally get a response, RPing I found makes it more likely to get a response.

Those are really pathetic "pirates" that have interdicted you. Real pirates make demands in chat. Real pirates talk first, shoot later. Those weren't real pirates. They were pathetic fools who thought they were pirating or psychos masquerading as pirates.

If you kindly let me know where you're at, I'll show you what real pirates are all about. :)

Yes, you can negotiate. Yes, they'll even chat with you. But no, make no mistake, if they are adamant in their demands (which are often quite reasonable) it is best to give them what they ask. Or you can run. That's a fun game--running. The pirates enjoy it... and the traders do too!

Just play where you are happiest and stop questioning why you are playing there. Lots of people who like PVP play group or solo and lots of people who hate PVP are in open.

With regards chat, sometimes its missed if aren't constantly looking at the comms panel.

Open is so much more than PVP but if you are having fun then who cares?

The one thing you get in open that you don't get in solo/group... is "risk". Sure you may have been killed by a random player looking to ruin somebodies pocketbook, but those encounters are typically pretty rare. And YES, you CAN escape if you know how. It takes specing your ship differently and knowing the technique. The best part about open for ME (besides pirating and the great PVP battles I have been a part of), are the new friends I have made. I have 4 in-game friends that I play with almost every night. We trade together, hunt together, Community goal together, and get each-other's back if there is ever trouble.

It's a blast, and none of it would have been possible in solo or group. You are only getting 1/2 the game in those modes. Move to open, and learn how to keep yourself alive, and you will have a LOT more fun, random deaths included.

Hi mate, this isn't problem of ED
Its problem of every MMO/online game these days.

In the old days i was ok just to stand in Market place in Ultima Online selling stuff and talking to people.
Just that activity of standing there and selling some raw materials satisfied me.

You haggled a bit.
Get to know people.
I called it "chat + game." and i would not really considered myself a social person.
We haven't played it we lived it.
Then it got more popular and it just happened.

We got fed up.
I always liked to blame the new folks... but it wasn't just them.
It was us, we got somehow fed up.
Like if it got simply too big for its own good.

You know how in small villages people know each other.
And in big city you just blur into a crowd.
Perhaps it was that... or something else? or combination of both.

Even RP crowd isn't what it used to be.
There is this rush and rulles everywhere.
Everything became rushed. Is it this rushed age we are living in ?
Yea if somebody talks at me, i answer. But its just so rare these days.

I've heard nice and fitting sentence lately (was about geocaching) :
"It was fun, while it was underground..." :(

Wow. This has to be the single worst piece of advice ever... I'm just sayin'

It's good advice, the game is full of players thinking everyone else is having more fun or making more money or that they are somehow missing out on something, well that advice makes perfect sense, stop worrying about everyone else and play how you want to, if you are not getting what you want from the game in the mode you are playing either switch modes or find another game more suited to your needs.

It's like all those gaming forums dedicated to ultimate character builds or 100% completion or power levelling, or even the sections on this one with ship loadouts, no one seems to want to just play a game and find things out for themselves anymore.

It's all,

"tell me why i should play this way"

Instead of,

"I guess I'll try that and see if I like it".

Indeed, Open is much more than PVP. But even that can be fun and thrilling. Never had a negative pirate experience actually.

But trying to interact with complete strangers you're simply passing by has rather mixed results in real life too. For me personally Open, and the game itself came to life once I found a bunch of people who shared what I found interesting in the game and are fun to hang with. It gave purpose to the game beyond amassing credits and ships. And to join a player group Open is not even strictly necessary, it just comes more natural to play there.

In the "old" days you only really got hardcore gamers who did the video game equivalent of the Marquis de Sade by playing Everquest. The game was so unfriendly the only way to get anywhere was by asking people. Nowadays MMO's are designed by a committee who have peeps dedicated to "interaction" so all the reasons to chat are now gone. I half expect the next crop to have a weather app so you don't even need to chat about that either.

To make a game really interactive you need a full server chat so everyone online - no matter where they are or what they are doing can chat in global. Games that are nearly dead like EQ2 can still feel very much alive due to the hilarious shenanigans in global chat. Games that aren't dead but don't have global like LOTRO can seem dead as a Vanilla Ice album.

You watch, if FD put a global channel in the game will light up like a xmas tree with ppl saying hi off the shoulder of Orion. Of course then you might get the mad ravings of those explorers out on the rim that haven't seen a soul for a month apart from their pet artichoke Rodney and some imaginary cats.

Aah everquest groups... A game designed to force grouping with its meditation rules meaning casters sat on their backsides for the fight then stood up blew it up and sat down again :)

From WOW onwards the "online community" has become more game and less chat oriented sadly.

I play open to hopefully see players and say hello. Just as playing on VZ meant the threat of PvP was ever present - even if I don't actively seek it - playing open means I have to be vigilent for the majority of my playtime... For me it adds a level of fun, but I acknowledge it isn't for everyone.

Maybe it's just me but I talk to a lot of other CMDRs, whether they are insulting me or we are asking about each other's loadout at stations, there's usually someone chatting when I drop in on stations
-
I also usually find someone else at the community goals wanting to team up, one such guy recently had just bought his python and was doing the bounty hunting community goal so wanted someone to join him in doing a strong signal source, turned out there were 3 anacondas inside so it was a fun battle for us
-
If your looking to strike up a conversation it can lead to new wingmates but you just have to pick your targets, check out peoples loadouts and even just complimenting people on their ship or paint job usually gets people talking , if they are trading in a popular dangerous system maybe offer to escort them
-
Open isn't just about PvP, I've had a wide range of encounters, some funny and some just plain fun battles where we teamed up
-
-
Or maybe head to the starter systems and find someone to mentor and help start out, there are endless possibilities you just have to keep looking
