Why the in game chat is dead ?

Try phoning them on the comms...?

is possible???

Yep. You get a ringing noise and everything.
Whether they answer or not is anyone's guess, but at least there's a noise to alert them to it, rather than relying on them noticing the silent comms window.

One of the most disappointing aspects are the social functions or lack thereof. I don't really have any friends that play games let alone Elite, so communicating to other CMDRs in a meaningful way is impossible.

Is this mmo ? One of icon of a good mmo is a busy general chat where players constantly add stupid comments, and some good stuff to read or to ask, a good way to make players friends an co-op gameplay.

There's is no star system or region wide-chat yet. So people feel alone and isolated.

1. Ehm... this is exactly how it currently works. As long as you have another player as a target, just hit enter, and start typing.

This is inefficient. First you must target another player, then you can chat with 1 player if he or she accepts (which rarely happens).

There should be optional chat lobbies with many players who do want to chat and socialize in-game.

Well yesterday I tried voicecoms with a random person in space and it worked just fine. Actually the special effects on audio made it sound so much better than raw teamspeak.

The acronym MMO stands for massively multiplayer online. Chatting with 1 person at a time isn't massive at all.

If there wont be factions/guilds with their own chat and maybe icon to stick on your ship, im gonna be disappointed, i know ED wants to be original and different, but it doesnt mean you have to leave all the multiplayer aspects of the game out.

I've always like the idea of a station chat channel for when you're docked. And maybe a system chat channel in high population systems too, just to get that populated ambience, but there shouldn't be any kind of general chat anywhere else IMO. I think that zone chat actually discourages players from randomly grouping up and playing together as you've got all the company you need right there in that little window in the corner of the screen.
