Why there isn't African leopard in planet zoo ???

Hello and hi everyone

I am wondering why there are no African leopard in planet zoo game

I thought African leopard is the "must have" animal in zoo simulation game ... Previous zoo tycoon 2 And zoo tycoon do have african leopard if I remember correctly ... I not very sure whether is it that I download user made mods animal or is in the game itself though ...

And also why there isn't African lion as well

Frontier can only release a limited amount of animals and had with the two tigers, the lion and the snow leopard already several cats.
They also saved some popular animals like jaguar and polar bear for dlcs. I'm sure there will be a kind of leopard.

Btw, the African leopard is not very common in Europe. According to zootierliste, there are less than 10 zoos with them in there. Amur leopard and Persian leopard seem to be the most common Subspecies of leopards in European zoos

There is a African lion, because West Africa is in Africa...

Yeah African leopards are pretty rare in zoos. Amur leopard on the other hand are far more common in comparison. We do have leopard decor tho so I guess anything is possible in future dlc content.

Preach!

If I recall it correctly, ZT2 had only jaguars, there was also downloadable contet called black leopard, so I guess they were kind of there, but just the black variant.

TBH the only cats I would like are the smaller species because the roster is quite limited with the current DLCs policy and we already have quite of them bigger cats. I think we need more species that are unlike anything that we already have. Also, I am not sure how different would be african lion to west african lion. Probably another grizzly/himalayan brown bear scenario. Mostly identical in looks. Would not want that if that would take a spot from another animal.

Not all roster decisions followed this rule of thumb to be honest. Plus we already have two cats from the genus Panthera that live in snowy habitats, and one from a rainforest environment, therefore my money is on the African leopard, as a "spotted big cat" from the African savanna that spends a good portion of time in trees.

That's true, there is not a single zoo in the EAZA who currently designated it's lions as West African Lion (zootierliste). But lot of zoos don't specify their subspecies and most zoo lions are subspecies-hybrids, so there are probably the descendants of West African Lions somewhere.

If Frontier wants to fill the biome gaps in their pantheras, the Arabian Leopard would be an interesting addition for our desert zoos

This game is seriously lacking. There's only 4 animals from Europe (and all of them can be found in North America or Africa as well so they're not even unique choices), South America only has 6 animals. And Oceania has 1 (and it can also be found in Asia so it's not unique either). They even adressed South America with dlc and it was woefully insufficient.

At this stage, I'd be somewhat disappointed if they added the African Leopard. We already have a very good selection of big cats.
At this point I rather have more variety in species. I don't mind if they add it eventually somewehere down the line

Personally I like the idea of selecting some species based on the biome. A lot of people wan to focus a zoo on a specific biome/theme (desert/jungle) and having species, that fit in that biome, would really help with the more themed zoos or themed areas in a zoo. Selection for desert animals is a bit lacking.

I guess it's a matter of preference. I would also like to see animals from regions that are poorly represented (like Antarctica or Australia) higher on the priority list, but at the same time I would also be disappointed if iconic African animals like the leopard and the two rhinos were not added. As long as they are added, I don't mind which is first, though.

There's already one African lion subspecies.

The game definitely needs the African leopard, but we already have a lion from Africa. The problem with it though is it has the wrong distribution map and taxonomy.
I agreed that game will need that. That's the last one to complete the Big Five of Africa along with one African native rhino species.

Amazing how far the game has come since this comment

Why aren't many popular animals in PZ? Certainly other leopards are more popular in zoos, including the Amur and the Clouded (present in the game), but unfortunately it isn't only the African leopard that is missing...

I don't see why we even need to bother adding them in, if modding this animal is way easier.

I'd rather see the spot be filled/used for something more unique something that we don't already basically have.
There are so many big cats already in the game that fill this niche already.

I'd like to see servals more than leopards, though I know we have a lot of cats in the game already. Servals are kind of unique looking, and they show up in US zoos. A new "cat" toy that is dangled from above (like a bird) could exhibit their amazing leaping ability. I agree, though, that Amur leopards are common in zoos in Europe and in North America (likely in other places too) and it's strange not to have them. Zoos always seem to have educational material telling people how to tell leopards and jaguars apart.

It's one of the limitations of the game, though. With only four expansions a year and 4-8 habitat animals per expansion, we're not going to see every animal found in typical world class zoos. Not unless they keep making DLC for many more years. Leopards have a different profile than jaguars as well as having a different rosette pattern. They are smaller and less stocky than jaguars and their back is less rounded. Also, leopards have a relatively longer tail. So a simple reskin from the jaguar would give us the Malayan tapir problem.

To be honest...they added the platypus too, which is only common in a few zoos in Australia....
