Why wasnt the Cobra the default ship ?

You know, correct me if I am wrong anyone, but isn't the game supposed to be like there is no real 'better' ship? But that depending on the career you choose, some ships are just more suited than others. And besides that, it all depends on your equipment as well?

So we might all work to use all ships at some point just to be able to say you know what it is like, but when you are a bountyhunter it is not sensible to fly a really big ship. Yet as a miner you need a big cargo hold.

My plan is to be a miner and a bountyhunter. If I get bored with one career, I will switch to the other for a while.

I think some people tend to want to do one thing in games, then get bored, leave the game. They are setting themselves up for boredom. So I plan on getting two ships, a mining equipped vessel and a powerboat.

I am also hoping parcel delivery missions work out well. I always liked carrying a few passengers or taking parcels for quick deliveries. So maybe I'll save up for some general purpose craft. Ah. Career creep. :-\

Actually, in FFE the starter ship was rather crap for ...well.. anything. The Saker was a small fighter with a piddly cargo bay. The thing about the later two Elite titles was that you started in a crap ship. The Eagle and Saker where NOT meant for trading, or heavy combat. (at least in my opinion, some combat pilots may disagree.) The fun was in building up to your favorite ship. The Asp was often regarded as the best combat craft, but I preferred a Cobra III, and others preferred a Harris or Viper. There may not be a 'best' ship at any given thing in Elite, but there are certainly ships that are not as good, but with the balance of being fairly cheap.

I suppose unless the Sidewinder is given Hyperspace Capability, it could always dock on a much larger ship that does have Hyperspace Capability. As long as that larger is going where it wants to go. That could make the game even more interesting.

The Sidewinder is supposed to have the highest Maneuverability, but says in the manual it only has Curve Factor of nine which is only one higher than the Cobra Mark Three.

Sidenote: I really hope that docking with other ships and switching ships mid flight will be possible at some point... :)

Sidewinder will have hyperdrive ;)
But yes it could be cool to dock in a larger ship :)

You mean hijacking

Well... no... I actually meant flying out in an Anaconda and switching into a Sidewinder hidden inside my cargo hold, in case of an attack by pirates. ;)

We'd need a crew or kind of autopilot for the Anaconda to remain flying then, though...

Will they have Jump-Gates?

Like the Spider ones from Oolite.

Sidewinders could use those if they didn't have their own hyper-drive.

Not too sure waht you mean there, but If you mean jumpgates for ships without hyperdrive; then no there won't be any jumpgates. All ships should have a hyperdrive system.

The only ships without hyperdirves will be the small imperial and federal (& Independant?) fighters that dock with a mother ship for hyperspace. The Sidewinder does have a hyperdrive.
