But zoos don’t only exist as conservation lifeboats - as important as that is - they also exist to educate people and allow them to see their native wildlife close up and learn more about them.Peccary. Wild boards are cool, but it's such an unimportant species in terms of conservation. Peccaries are both prevalent in zoo's, as well as endangered in form of the Chacoan Peccary.
I would never fully understand the wild boar craze. And your argument did not conviced me at all. We would probably get it before Peccary becouse so many people are talking about it.But zoos don’t only exist as conservation lifeboats - as important as that is - they also exist to educate people and allow them to see their native wildlife close up and learn more about them.
From that point of view, the wild boar is important in Europe and it’s pretty much impossible to build a zoo focussing on native European fauna without them.
Yeah same. I get that is the last big name from European forest wildlife left but is so unninteresting to me compared to the peccaries tbh. Only thing i like about wild boars are their pigglets lolI would never fully understand the wild boar craze. And your argument did not conviced me at all. I can kinda understand it, its an essential animal to us europeans but isnt really found in collections worldwide. So i get non europeans not being super keen on getting it.Part of me feels like the apathy towards the wild boar from some is an extension of apathy for European animals in general. As I understand, outside of Europe it's extremely rare to find any zoos with dedicated areas to European fauna.
As someone from Europe who likes to build zoos set in Europe, one of my absolute favourite things to build is native species areas. Currently if I want to build a large native area for Europe and want to include some ungulate paddocks (usually in a forested setting) my options are basically limited to deer (there is the ibex but for them I'm going to build something more montane) while for carnivores I can include lynx but also wolves and even bears (I basically use the HBB as a EBB... It looks more like one anyway). I'd really really really like to have some ungulates to use besides deer and wild boar are basically the perfect fit for this for something closer to the ground with a different lifestyle, also wisent for something truly huge but thats a different discussion.
I feel similarly about ABB as well, but major difference is North America has already got a good carnivore variety, Europe does not have a good ungulate variety by comparison.I can kinda understand it, its an essential animal to us europeans but isnt really found in collections worldwide. I mean i feel the same about stuff like the american black bear. Its an essential animal to americans, but its irrelevant to pretty much everyone else. So i cant really be mad about other people not wanting the boar
