will ED run ok on a surface book?

well before I think about biting the bullet and buying the game will it run ok on my system? its a surface book i5 8gb model with gpu, if anyone can advise that'd be great

The base game runs on almost anything. Horizons are a bit more demanding, but not that much.
The only problem is that for Horizons you need to run a 64-bit system.

But I played Elite on AMD A8 laptop and it ran decently.

I think you missed out on the opportunity to try the Arena mode for free. That would help you a lot.
But if you don't want to pay a full price, I thing (please check it - it was true some time ago, but I may be wrong, now) You can buy the Arena (PvP shooter sim in the same engine) for a couple of bucks on steam and when you buy the whole Elite, the Arena's price is deducted from the end price.

I play base ED on my i5 Surface Pro 3. Haven't really tried with Horizons. The base ED playable at min settings.

Can confirm. I run elite on my i7 256gb 8gbRAM SB.
Horizons works very well too! Doesn't even heat up the device too much. I don't usually play it on pc however because I like the Xbox version much better (the community is much kinder, and optimisations seem much better of course) but to answer your question, yes it runs perfectly!

EDIT: People are talking about quality so ill add that I play on high settings at 3000x2000 resolution.

Its an NVIDIA 940m with 1gb of gddr5

It's actually custom Nvidia! There is no name for it, but it behaves similarly to the 940/950m and that's why windows sees it as that.

So I'm best just getting the base game to start? What if I ran planetary stuff at a low resolution? How low can it go?

The Surface Book's keyboard component has a dedicated video card, so in theory it should run the game.

However, the Surface Book's GPU was officially called "a GPU for the gamer who plays League of Legends", which means it's not THAT powerful and additionally the Surface Book has a very high display resolution. I think if you set the game's resolution down to Full HD it should run fine, not sure about Horizons though.

On my PC, Horizons runs quite a bit slower, but then again my GTX760 isn't the most modern video card out there and still runs Horizons without issues.

Passmark average scores for the GPU on my laptop - a GTX 960m with an average score of 1,771 - are just under double those of GT 940m (980 points), which is a little beefier than the custom Nvidia chip in the Surface Book. I can play at 2k (1920x1080) at high settings. I get about 50fps in space stations and the same (I think) on planet surfaces from the settings the game recommends when I first play.

So you need to set the resolution a lot lower than 3000x2000 for a start! Start the game, let it scan your system and opt to use the recommended settings. See how it plays and then tweak. Like others have said, it will play, but it's a question of what framerates you find acceptable. I've always found that the framerates on the surface on mobile GPUs are lower, obviously, but it's not a dealbreaking issue for me because the FPS is consistent, which contributes to it not feeling slow.

That said, I have no idea how that GPU will perform on planetary surfaces - the system is below minimum recommended specs for just the base game (although not by much), and way below recommended minumum specs for Horizons (although so is mine and it runs fine, but cf. my point above about benchmarks.)

In short, I think it will play. In space, you should be fine if you adjust the resolution. Planetside, however, I just don't know - I don't want to say "yes, buy it" for you to spend however-many-dollars for a pretty moon slideshow.

oh wow thanks, that's good to know, mines the i5 so guess I might have to knock a setting or 2 down?

My graphic card needed send back for reparation (RMA)
