Will lack of subscription kill Elite?

Yes but the solo community is still happy with the outcome at the cost of poor open mode stability. They don't give rat's ass about the open play and as long as their solo mode is stable, open play is just going to fall apart and this game is going to bleed even more players and eventually die.

I would actually be happy if the first part of your comment was true. Solo players DO care about open mode, they switch to solo when they're trading to avoid conflict, then back to open when they want a fight. In any other game this would be considered a violation of the rules. If people in solo were forced to remain in solo this would be a perfectly fine arrangement.

If ED turned into a subscription based game I'd be asking for a refund. I bought in to this game when single player was offered and that's what I really wanted a single player game that only I'm playing, not competing with loads of other real people for the same trade routes.

If they then decided to go with a subscription it would be the final straw for me and I'd say "bah bye now."

Item shops? I don't mind getting a vanity item from there every now and then, but buying ships? Not into pay to win models, so again it would be "bah bye now."

It's a quote from the Kickstarter FAQ over a year ago. The point I was making in my earlier post was that an awful lot have time has passed since then, and we've seen that features and approaches 'promised' (for want of a better word) in the Kickstarter, may not pan out in reality. There was discussion in the DDF (and a poll) over cash for credits, with the majority of people saying 'no - bad idea'. The approach was then taken of raising money via cash sales for cosmetics (i.e. skins and decals) in the shop. There was also a separate poll about the price of skins (the majority settled for £2-5 IIRC).
.
Charging for skins was also apparently contradictory to what was said in the Kickstarter (the KS FAQ implies all items in game would be available using in game cash), and when FDev were called out about this there was a response form Michael Brooks along the lines of 'would you prefer cash for credits?'.
.
So, bottom line, I'd treat everything in the Kickstarter FAQ with a bit of scepticism, given a) the intervening time, b) the 'wooliness' of some of the phrasing (allowing the 'bare minimum' game we have now to fulfil the KS goals) and c) the obvious loss of major features that went some way to secure the original KS backing (i.e. the whole offline debacle).
.
Really bottom line - only FDev know what their current intentions are - we're all second guessing without clarification. They have stated that Elite is a 'flagship' product for them and has been budgeted accordingly, so I don't think the intention is for a subscription model anytime soon, if at all. But we know what the road to Hell is paved with, and as per my last sentence, I'm second guessing. ;)

+1 Thanks for that. I'm pretty sure that cash for credits would ruin the game from a multiplayer perspective and it is good they are listening to backers - many of whom have no doubt experienced MMOs with different payment models. OTOH, I have no problem with them charging for skins (and expansions, of course) and they can still make certain skins prestige items for completing content, if they so wish as well.

Often when you have these discussions, people seem to imagine that it would be nice if everything was free and don't appear to realise that although the devs might be very enthusiastic about their game, they still need to eat :). They also need to account to their shareholders and "we thought it would beneift mankind to make a free space sim" probably isn't going to cut it at the next board meeting.

P.S. I'd have followed the game in more detail if I'd realised how good it was going to be - but after plunking my 2cents on the kickstarter I sort of lost track of it.

I would pay for vanity items like skins and I would donate money on a voluntary basis for server upkeep, even though I backed with the idea of playing offline - I still want the game to succeed even if I can hardly play due to the on-line thing. I would donate to cover when I can play. If they bring in subscription or credits for cash they will get no more money from me.

I actually think offering a, standalone, single player game. Taking peoples money on that basis then saying sorry not happening, but thanks for your cash is false advertising.

Hey, buy this car today and we'll give you some 18" rims free... month later, sorry you can't have those rims now, we decided it made better business sense to give you the crap ones. Yeah, I bet you did.

lack of features, plenty of bugs, dishonesty, and poor support is, and will continue to kill ED.

Well sign off the forums and subscribe to something else then. What is it with people that they have to continually pester everyone who is enjoying a game with useless negativity. ED is game of the year for me, you don't like it so play something else and stop bothering those who do. Constructive criticism is great, but when you've given up on a game, just give up and do something else.

This is why I dont participate in kickstarters or pay companies to do their beta testing for them. If they can get your money in a way that lets them skirt consumer laws, they will.

I certainly appreciate all the suckers... err backers, that made ED possible, but I dont regret for one second that I wasnt one of them.

ppl come from game that have been in development for years and think a not even month old game going to be the same way oh and they expect the development team to work on holidays

I was answering the question posed by the OP. If you consider this action "pestering" clearly you are not cut out for discussion forums. People answering questions on forums is standard stuff, and since you are so thin-skinned, that it's too much for you to fathom ignoring or going to another discussion, Facebook awaits you.

I never said I gave up, or was quitting the game; learn to read. I enjoy the game, but I'm also sick and tired of it's many issues that don't seem to be getting fixed any time soon.

But given that you dub the game "game of the year", your response makes total sense.

Don't need a subscription fee to make money. The game costs 60 usd, there will be plenty of expansions, and there is a ton of paint jobs and merchandise, i have already bought two paintjobs, gotta rock the stars and stripes lol.

Anyone placing expectations on when developers work, and how often, is off base. Who cares? What I care about is that they deliver on their promises, because I paid them to do so. I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't value their hard earned money and would rather make excuses for FD, simply because they "love" what the game was promised to be.

In the future don't pay for promises, pay for product. When I hit the buy button on the night of Dec. 15th I knew exactly what I was getting, which is probably why Im not disappointed. If they continue to improve it, fantastic. If they don't then Ill have easily gotten my $60 worth and some from the time Ive already put into the game and enjoyed what was there to enjoy. Paying for promises is a suckers game. Find out what the product is before you buy it, make your decision based on that and that alone, and you are far less likely to suffer disappointments in the future.

Caveat emptor.

OK then so what do you think Frontier should do about these "issues" you are so concerned about? Perhaps you imagine all the devs are just sitting around in their Cambridge offices swilling champagne or something for the duration, and David Braben has forgotten to ask them to continue working on the game?

Don't worry about FD or ED. We'll be alright, and I think you'll like what the guys in the Dev team have planned.

To reiterate on what David B has said before... No plans to ever add subscription model.

Thanks Edward, that is great to hear. Really enjoying the game right now, and can't wait to see where it goes from here. The foundation that the team has built is really spectacular, in Braben I trust.
