Will my laptop run this game?

Hi all,
I've just found out about this game, and I can't wait for it to be released! Haven't been this excited about a computer game in a very long time!
However, all I have to play the game on is a laptop meant mainly for work. So I'm worried how Elite : Dangerous will play on it.
I accept I'll have to turn all the settings down to minimum. But I don't want to find that even after doing that, it still runs as a snails pace.

Is there any kind of 'tech demo' that can be downloaded just to see how the graphics engine runs?
(I'm not looking to actually play the game, just see how performance is...)

Thanks,
Rich

My laptop specs are:
64-bit Intel Core i5-2540M CPU 2.60 GHz (4 core)
RAM: 4GB
Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro 1000M
(When I look at the details of my graphics, here's the gumpfh I get:
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
TOtal Available Graphics Memory: 3780 MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 2048 MB
System Video Memory: 0 MB
Shared Video Memory: 1732 MB

I don't think there is any sort of demo, though if you post your specs, people with similar machines will be able to tell you what sort of frame rate they get.

EDIT: Spec-ninja'd :D

i haven't had much problems running it on my rig, though i have a graphics card which is (on Nvidea's scale, since you're talking nvidea) about the same as a GTX660TI, with a quad core and 8gb ram ----------- that said, i sometimes stutter coming out of warp

honestly unless your laptop is really high end there's no point in even trying

Yes.

My laptop runs it (just) and apart from memory is a worse spec. I do have to play with everything set on low though.

i5-2520M @2.5GHz (4-core)
RAM: 8G
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000
Total Available Graphics Memory: 1696 MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 64 MB

Shared Video Memory: 1632 MB

Thanks for the feedback...Well, I went to the site knucklesnorton recommended, and the results didn't look promising :(

But, from what Fastdruid and ykza5 said, there seemed to be hope......so I threw caution to the wind and just bought the beta tonight......and......it runs like an absolute pig :(
I've turned down everything I can see. Resolution at min. All graphics settings at min....And it's still unplayable :(
Basically it starts grinding to a halt before I even leave the station...Fastdruid,Can I ask what kind of frame rates you are getting with your system? If yours is playable, is the 4GB -> 8GB difference the real clincher?Any other ideas on what I can turn down / off for performance?

Cheers guys,
Rich

There's no way another 4GB of RAM will make any difference. Basically speaking your graphics just aren't up to the task and therefore your laptop never will be either, sadly.

:( Bummer.

Only settings are graphic quality to low and GUI effects off.

As an easy comparison in the asteroid field in tutorial 2 "Pilot's License Stage 2: Target Practice" I'm getting 22.5 (at launch, ie no movement) facing into the field and ~37 facing the space field. It is only just playable and I haven't played a lot as I have a proper gaming PC for it.

ED is using 1G of memory and about 25% cpu so it's purely down to the graphics card and TBH I would have expected your GFX card to do much better than mine.

For comparison, I get around 20-25 fps most of the time with 10-15 in stations with a Toshiba Qosmio X770 with following specs:

I7 2670QM at 2.20 w. turbo to 3.1
Nvidia GTX560M 1.6
8GB RAM
WIN 7

In game settings to high with shaders turned to medium, ambient occlusion turned off and bloom to low. In other words, laptops in general sucks.

Worth having another go. 3.9 seems much better, Ok so I'm still not getting massive framerates but seems more consistent with a low of 17 seen on the way out of the training docking tutorial.

I have a lower spec laptop than that and I'm getting 24 fps in stations and 40-50 everywhere else. Asteroid fields stay in the 20-30s and look amazing.

Resolution seems to help, I'm at 1176xsomething on a big TV screen, AA off and everything on high with med shadows.

i5 3ghz
Gt525m +100mhz over clock
8 gigglybytes cheap ram

Use the 'native' resolution of your monitor or else the GFX processor has MORE work to do resizing the screen to a lower resolution! I use a laptop and it has two GFX processors one for battery friendly operation and one for full performance. You may have to make sure that your power settings are set to use full performance of your machine. I do this simply by plugging it in rather than using battery power, you may also have to use a cooler boost or some other heat management device. I cant tell you how to use your computer but laptops do have some funny intricacies when it comes to playing games.

Nah the graphics card has no idea what resolution a screen is - it just outputs what it's told to. So all else being equal, a smaller resolution will result in a higher frame-rate.

3.9 certainly appears to have greatly improved performance, that's for sure.

that quadro card is pretty old, and isn't a gaming gpu per-se - but is comparable performance wise to something like a GT540m (source: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Quadro-1000M.47317.0.html)

it should run the game but I wouldn't hold any hopes of getting above 720p resolution at anything other than low-medium settings at a playable framerate

sorry but that's just not true, E: D is pretty forgiving even in it's pre-release state. many pre-kepler nvidia and comparable amd mobile cards are able to play it. It just depends on what your opinion of 'playable' is. Some people are fine with max 30fps, others can't accept anything under 60!
