Will Odyssey be worth it?

Not to throw shade at you or anyone else, but I never got buying a game/expansion just for the visuals*, especially one like Elite that has a good bit more to offer.

Take Godfall for example. It's stunningly gorgeous, but last I heard the game itself is god-awful not everyone's cup of tea.
*except space engine, of course. Which I would definitely recommend instead of Elite if visuals are you're thing.
Oh, I'll be getting it for the whole kit and kaboodle, but looking at the visuals there, those alone - on distant worlds, are worth the pennies it costs.....
I recall the first time in the alpha/beta phases that they opened up supercruise - that moment when you could start traversing a system, see the stars and the planets with that epic soundscape - I almost didn't care about the gameplay at that moment.

The number of people taking part in Stellar Screenshots and with the SPVFA - that speaks volumes about the visuals and what it means to people.

I remember visiting the house of a fellow commander and getting together with others in a wing in one room - before the external camera, and spending hour upon hour using the TrackIR to line up shots of their ship whilst looking through the ceiling of the Sidewinder.

Totally worth it.

A little off-topic, but I totally see where you're coming from. I mean, check this out. Posted this in a screenie thread a while back:

Have had this saved as my backround on my pc for quite a while now.
Hard to believe that a few days ago it looked like this:

Yep. My 'condas parked in the exact same spot in both these pics. Just a day or two apart. Really shows how dynamic the star systems are in ED.
Now imagine that but with a beautiful blue sky. Whether that's worth $40 or not is still up for debate, but one thing we can agree on is that it's still damn beautiful, and I'm exited nontheless.

Well in my case even though I have a really sh*tty internet connection (between 4.0 and 4.5 Mbps) I actually enjoy ED both in solo and open and never experienced any major problems.

Odyssey will be built on ED foundation so I'm confident we'll get plenty to do in solo...they've already talked about scavenging, fps mission to kill NPC, discovering new biological form, new planetary surface to explore on foot, new vistas to discover (been half of my playtime in ED)...that's quite enough for me to pre-order and know that it's money well spent.

I'm no white knight but I've been playing this game for overs 2.5 years, logged close to 1500 h and I'm still playing so new gameplay and stuff to do is a big yes for me. Anyway, apart from MSFS2020 & DCS I didn't spent money on any other games since I discovered ED.

ED always have been about choices and think that Fdev nailed it and won't change their formula in Odyssey.

Wow, such great responses, thank you everyone. I'm not overly concerned about the cost. The amount of money I've spent building and upgrading my computer and peripherals for playing games like MS Flight Sim would make most people choke.

So I'm not overly concerned with $50 bucks. The only games I've ever "pre-ordered" were games by Cyan which I helped back because I really love their products and there's some great swag to go with backing. Usually I wait for a game to be out for a while before buying it, usually a year. That way most of the bugs are worked out. I got ED with the horizons season pass, so I never experienced the early growth problems. I'm sure game play will be beautiful and will likely out perform my current hardware, but in a year or two I'll be upgrading my PC again.
My main concern is about the FPS function. I'm a long time FPS gamer going back to the beginning of Counter Strike Source for online multi player and back to Duke Nukem 3D and Star Wars Dark Forces in single player. I do miss playing online FPS, but living in the sticks and having to use my cell phone as my internet connection means online gaming is out of the question. My one attempt at CSS resulted in 1FPM (not even FPS) and I never actually got to play. By the time it loaded the join menu I bailed.

My worry would be that doing on foot stuff would get repetitive and mundane with FPS limited to multi player scenarios. Or that bot (NPC) control would be iffy. I can still play CSS offline if I want against bots, but anyone who has done that will know how useless that can be. I really was excited when the X series brought about their "space legs" with X: Rebirth, but the game had some limitations. They've had X4: Foundations out for quite some time, but I've been hesitant in buying it because you can't land on planets. When I saw FD was coming out with "space legs" for ED and the ability to land on planets with atmospheres, I got even more excited.

I actually thought Odyssey was already in Alpha or Beta with the "Early 2021" proposed release date, which I why I posed the question. I'll definitely wait till it's been out a while before buying, but if much of the function isn't available in Solo, then it won't be worth it to me.

Nice setup :D

You really shouldn't worry about whether the game will support solo. It's one of Braben's core beliefs about his product, I'm sure of it; he always said Elite was primarily about the solo player experience first.

Whether that means we get great allied bots to help on missions or it's just designed for a single player (excluding wing variants) we can't be sure. But fdev do not prioritise over the solo experience.

^^ This

One thing FD have always been true to, and that is the modes and supporting the ability to do any activity in the game in solo, with the obvious exceptions of stuff like wings and multicrew which are clearly designed for multiplayer but are more enablers than content.

See in the original you where stuck with this which particularly sucked if you had just been in a tough fight and had manually docked.....

now with Odyssey they have a chance to bring this mechanic back and allow us to fight back!!
