Will the final game have more guidance? Should it?

So, I've been having a blast switching between space trucking and blasting federation fighters, but I'm wondering what's next. I know there is a spirit of exploration intended in the game design, but I'm kind of wanting some help finding new experiences. Anyone else feel this way? Will the mission system give me a simple path to follow, or is that against the spirit of the game? thoughts?

From what we know so far next comes the integration with Galnet news system and more advanced missions such as escorts and assassinations. This should be in Beta 2 See the last newsletter.

The news system may guide your actions along with a contact system that will see you managing an address book of previous encounters. You'll go back to that one system where that guy buys that commodity at a high price, or fixes your pulse laser cheaper than anyone else.

Then there is the rating system (Beta 2). The missions you are offered will change depending on your reputation. Speaking of reputation, you'll be guided by your allegiance to factions, that will open up very interesting stories. Don't forget 'events' too. When the space station opens there are related missions (taking important personnel for the opening ceremony or just assassinating them which might even get you mentioned in Galnet and causing the mission system to request players hunt you down)

There's a whole bunch of stuff coming quite soon that will flesh out your story and guide your path far more than ferrying cargo back and forth. As an open universe though, if you choose to ferry cargo back and forth that's your own damn fault.

At the moment we have very little to work with so I don't think there is much you're missing atm. In the future we will have mining, exploration (mostly cartography I think) and more formalized faction warfare, piracy, smuggling and bounty hunting.

There are two things you didn't list though, pirating npc's and pirating other players. Pirating npc's is reasonably lucrative. What's better than getting a cargo bay full of battle weapons, slaves and gold that you paid for with ammo? No need to worry about long term consequences either. We don't have an effective reputation system yet and there will be more wipes (possibly very soon).

In the final game, there should be tutorials to cover some broad concepts such as mining, trading, exploration and combat. These tutorials should cover the mechanics involved. But ultimately you must figure out how to use those tools yourself. A sandbox is only as good as your imagination.

Oh right, in the current Beta.

Arm up a viper and go hunt some bounties, see if you can find a K-warrant scanner and hang out at a nav beacon or resource extraction site.

OR

Arm up a cobra/viper and go pirating. Nav beacons are good but you might want to try going to an anarchic system and hanging outside a station (with a little distance) and waiting for an NPC hauler to pass by :) You could try fitting a cargo scanner and targeting the cargo hatch on a Lakon.

OR

Check out the 'unidentified signal sources' some of them are quite interesting :)

This brings up a related point. Where the hell do I find stuff? Blindly travel from system to system? (that's how I found my gear so far...) Is this not the future?!

If you search around a bit on google or this forums search function I'm sure you can find the purchasing locations for various items. (There really should be a way of finding out in-game though)
