Will we ever see base building in Elite?

I'm still waiting for sensible, workable suggestions fwiw.

So far so meh.

In fact, I actually provided one myself but whatever. I'm largely happy with the direction FDev is taking the game into so no issue either way for me.

Indeed.

And if encountering problems was the primary driver behind not doing anything then we'd still be in beta.

No idea what asking for non-core gameplay features has to do with "not doing anything" when it come to determine the feasibility of features. At first you'd need to determine whether the engine and network architecture supports that kind of stuff in the first place.

No you're not - you're just looking to argue, and I'm not biting. It's the typical small-minded "I don't want that, therefore nobody can have it" nonsense this forum has been plagued with since the start. Thankfully Frontier often ignores such naysaying, and that's why I have a supercruise autopilot today, and space legs tomorrow(ish) :D

It's an idea. Something that has potential. Like carriers started out as.

If I'd have suggested carriers two years ago there'd have been "arguments" just like yours then too.

The idea that an idea proposed by a player should somehow pass design document quality and gain sign-off from a few other players in order to garner support to... What?

It's just weird. I see lots of ideas that don't particularly interest me. I don't think my lack of interest is important enough to wade in and demand they change my mind with "sensible workable solutions".

If fdev like something enough to consider, they don't need my say so to come up with something they consider useful or fun.

It's this weird urge prevalent in game forums to express opposition to ideas rather than actually talk about them... Just odd.

So, I repeat, it's not essential for you to sign off. Certainly less important for us to understand your dislike of the idea when your reason is that you dislike something about carriers...

When you use a carrier yourself.

Fdev are about to push an expansion that they propose will allow us to never buy or fly a ship...

Why do Fcs exist then? Why bother having space at all? Why not just scrap space and stick to fps? Hyperbolic rhetoric aside, they want us to have options. Not owning a carrier is an option yet they created them.

Why bother if we don't need them?

Because they're fun! Not for everyone. But they're fun! That's enough of a reason for anything to exist in a game. Fcs are a prime example of that. Bases wouldn't be any different. But they can offer similar cool things.

Whether an idea is "workable" or not is irrelevant at the idea stage! That's not our responsibility, is it? If you don't like an idea then fine. But to say so because of the reasons you've said (don't like fleet carrier names, don't think you'd need a base) but then pretend to be "genuinely interested" but shut down all proposals for other reasons is just disingenuous.

It can. They've proved it can with Fcs.

When they delete Fcs because they're not feasible, let me know.

Your opinion on them is irrelevant as to whether fdev consider them "workable" or not.

Don't need space legs! I only want to fly ships!

Fdev: oh! OK... Sorry... Well, Odyssey is cancelled, I guess. Sorry guys!

What a spectacular misreading of my posts. Asking for sound arguments for something is apparently arguing, I see.

I was initially against space legs, I can happily admit that no problem. And now I'm not, having watched the first couple of dev diaries.

I'm not a fan of base building based on experience with other games, but am once again happy to be convinced otherwise. It would require a bit more than "cos they're fun!" though. Anyways you keep on dreaming about it I'm sure that'll make it happen... somehow.

I suggested this above but I'd say knowing what Odyssey is going to bring would have a big impact on what player bases might offer.

I'd be much less inclined to want them right now but once surface game play is much richer, specifically once we can run about on foot (and maybe drive greater variety of vehicles), the potential for player owned locations to be fun and functionally useful dramatically expands. Maybe a better topic for discussing after Odyssey.

I'm very much open to the potential though. But then I'm open to the idea of ship interiors and actually using them for fun reasons but that gets shut down too because of the same personal objections of necessity, (I won't use it, why does the game need it?) as if anything added to a game should ever be about necessity!

So the position base building occupies on my "list of things I dream about" is pretty low, mate.

I am excited about Odyssey, though. I'm quite happy to admit that. I cannot wait for the next dev diary. The potential is huge and yup, that'll get me thinking about other cool things that could happen as a consequence.

Base building isn't something I've done much. I'm less bothered by the NMS style and much more interested in how owning a permanent surface asset could integrate with other activities. Specifically once we can walk about or drive more vehicles.

Noted that you're less interested, though.

Better than carriers,

until the small and peaceful forgotten corner of the bubble that you chose to name home will get steamrolled by a squadron of competent bgs-ers that will topple down the friendly faction you nurtured.
and you cannot do anything about it...

at least with a carrier - you can move wherever you want to...

That I can agree on.

Also, as per your post further above, you're at the idea stage ("wouldn't it be great to have it") whereas I was already at the due diligence/implementation stage ("what would it add, and how could we make it work"). I don't want to shoot down ideas straightaway, but I need to understand what an idea can add to the game before I go with it, that's all really.

I'm very much open to the potential though. But then I'm open to the idea of ship interiors and actually using them for fun reasons but that gets shut down too because of the same personal objections of necessity, (I won't use it, why does the game need it?) as if anything added to a game should ever be about necessity!

I don't have anything against interiors either, but in the same way as for bases there are a number of other areas that take a hell of a lot of time and effort to implement, so if it comes down to whether I want interiors, bases and atmos for example, the inner child in me would scream "ALL OF THE ABOVE NOW" but the adult in me would have to concede that that's unlikely to happen so I'd have to provide a list in order of preference on what I would like FDev to focus on first, and that's by far going to be extending the game world to the currently locked away stellar objects (atmos & gas giants predominantly). Others, like yourself will and can disagree on that and I have zero problem with that.

At the end of the day neither of us will dictate what FDev picks after Odyssey, it might be bases despite them saying it's not on their radar, it might be ELWs, it might be Elite Dangerous 2. Who knows.

Seeing as how FC's exist, that's a resounding no.

That "leak" was about the only thing that mentioned base building, and that may have been accurate at the time. But at some point between then and now, they must have scrapped that idea in favor of solo-owned carriers, instead of squadron-owned carriers and solo-owned bases (just a guess)*.

But lets say they do make it in at some point. One restriction they're going to have to implement is where you build them. Obviously they can't be too close to each other, nor can there be too many on a single planet. Hell, they might even say "no building in inhabited systems at all".

So what's the point of owning a base when FCs exist? For starters, it'd be much cheaper. For me, the only thing an FC has going for it is mobility. Take that away, and their value decreases exponentially.

Don't know about ya'll, but I'd love to have my own base just outside the bubble where I can store most of my stuff, granted there's no passive credit drain involved.

*Hmmmm.... now that I think about it, squadron-owned bases actually sound like a good idea....

Not what I'm looking for from this game, unless maybe it's done through the BGS for factions or something like that.

If I wanted to play that sort of game I would just play Space Engineers.
