Hardware & Technical Windows 10, free

According to the latest information, the update of Windows 10 will be free during 1 year for the users of Windows 7 and 8. There will be counterparties, at this "gift" from Microsoft ? It seems too good ...

Well, it's been confirmed as free (for Win 7 and 8 users) in the W10 launch event so I guess some things are not too good to be true. ;)

I've been using W10 on a separate partition and it's really good IMHO. Fixes the "mistakes" of W8 and just feels much nicer to use. In fact my main issue with it is that you cannot reorganise/create new folders in the Start Menu. The fact that is my main gripe says a lot I think... for me anyways. :)

Interesting... I got the impression that Microsoft's move to 'Windows as a service' meant that there would be a yearly subscription cost, as per Office. Assuming that's not the case (which MS have themselves denied) I'm very happy. Though there are clearly some issues with Windows 8, I still view it as a big improvement on Windows 7.

Yeah, I kinda thought that too. As for a 'free' upgrade to Win 10 - will that apply to OEM versions of Win 7, I wonder?

It should - as long as your license key is valid and not a Starter edition, the Win10 upgrade will be free until Sept 2016. It will also deactivate that original key. My only source is our on-site MS rep at work, so I take that with a pinch of salt. He hasn't said anything about Home/Professional/Enterprise differentiation - I have no idea what upgrading a Win7 Home Premium or a 8.1 Professional edition will end up as.

I smell a very fishy rat.

From the company that thinks it's bad karma to ask for a pay rise!

A major games company, Steam I believe, is planning to bring out a Linux OS later this year, dedicated to gaming. If it's any good I do hope Frontier are able to write their code in without having to sell their souls to Steam.

A lot of OEMs can use the same key for thousands of identical units, so I can't see the deactivation applying to OEM if there is truth to what you were told. However, OEM copies sold through a reseller will have different product keys per copy, so they would be unique. But, I doubt Microsoft have a way of differentiating bulk versus individual, so I would assume that provided the OEM sticker is attached to the chassis and displays the qualifying product (Windows 7 & 8) then the license entitlement to upgrade to a new copy of Windows 10 would be valid. That's if Microsoft are offering Windows 10 to OEM users full stop of course, and not just the retail and volume-licensed editions (where a copy has been specifically purchased by an audited process)- certainly adoption would be greater to include all types of license, but this is Microsoft we're talking about! ;)
